2 Teaching Graduate teaching: Master theses (honours students and regular students) on civic participation, participation of ethnic minorities, governance in urban areas, trust in multiethnic neighbourhoods, development of extreme right. PhD supervision Masters Course: Policy Research and Policy Advice o Students learn how to perform a meta-analysis or a literature review, based on existing policy evaluations, enabling them to draw more general conclusions on the effectiveness of policy interventions. Students write a policy advice based on their own meta-analysis. Undergraduate teaching: All undergraduate courses where taught using the online teaching environment Blackboard Social Problems: An introduction into Sociology (BA1) Social Steering of the Netherlands (BA1) Tutor of BA1 and pre-master students Methods and Techniques (BA1) Policy and Evaluation Research (BA3) o We teach students how they can perform an effect, process or realistic evaluation within daily professional practice. Students also learn how to discern good from bad research designs. I coordinated this course and gave the lectures. An interdisciplinary team of five teachers gave the tutorials. The 250 students come from all faculties of the university and hence have very different backgrounds. Bachelor theses (BA3) Off campus teaching: Minor Social Sciences for Economy Students: 'Policy and Evaluation Research' (BA3) Research Research themes: neighbourhood development, policy analysis, social cohesion, participation, tolerance, discrimination, ethnic diversity. Research projects: "Neighbourhood Deprivation, Exit, and Voice: Searching for Mechanisms of Decline." Veni Grant, funded by the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO). o This project focused on the relation between civic behaviour and neighbourhood development. What do residents do when their neighbourhood declines? Who leaves, who waits and who takes action? How do combinations of ethnic groups in the neighbourhood influence the residents reactions? "With or without social organisation? A comparative study into the mobilizing and intermediary role of the local social infrastructure in governance processes. Funded by the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO) and STIP/NICIS. o This project focused on the question to what extent effectiveness, sustainability and representation of processes in coproduction in cities can be positively influenced by civic organizations. 2

3 Supporting Education 2011 Project manager of the project 'Study success of talented students, in everyone's interest'. This project aimed to enhance the study success of first generation students (like immigrant students and students from a working class background) at the Faculty of Social Sciences (UU) Acquisition and Project management of the SURF project 'Study Choice Interviews'. o This project experimented with different kinds of study choice interviews for high school students choosing a major in their Bachelors. The aim was to help prospective students to make the right choice Chair of the committee evaluating the tutoring system at the Faculty of Social Sciences. o This project investigated which activities, under the heading 'Tutoring' were undertaken within the Faculty of Social Sciences (UU) and which of these activities can be labeled as 'best practice' Researcher at the Faculty of Geosciences, Utrecht University, the Netherlands. Graduate teaching Master theses Research PhD thesis Governance as Glue: Urban Governance and Social Cohesion in Post WWII Neighbourhoods in the Netherlands. Promotor: Prof. Ronald van Kempen, co-promotor Dr. Gideon Bolt. o This research focused on the best circumstances to create social cohesion in deprived post-war neighbourhoods, the evaluation of the effect of governance practices, and providing insight into the relation between social cohesion and urban governance Junior researcher of the UGIS project (Urban Governance, Social Inclusion and Urban Sustainability) financed within the EU Fifth Framework. o This research, coordinated by Prof. Dr. Jan Vranken (Antwerp University) studied the effect of policy programmes on (1) social inclusion in deprived neighbourhoods (2) sustainability in cities (3) the relation with urban governance. Supporting Research Project manager of the RESTATE project (Restructuring Large Scale Housing Estates in Europe) funded within the EU Fifth Framework Programme. o It was my responsibility, together with the coordinator and the 12 partners in 10 countries, to design the study and to ensure that responsibilities were clear and deadlines were met. I was responsible for reporting Project manager at Wonen & Milieu, a consultancy company specialised in projects on residential development and neighbourhood engagement.
