18 Seedfinancing Rationale of the program Issues Innovative SME s are increasingly important in economic growth, job creation and regional and local development The Equity gap exists: only a small amount of Venture capital is available during the seed phase ( 2% of VC in Austria provided for seed investments) Financing innovative SME s is very risky and uncertain, making it difficult for these SME s to obtain financing 18

19 Seedfinancing: Program objectives General Objective To strengthen Austria s competitive position and to increase the number of high-tech companies, products and jobs Specific Objectives - To increase the number of new High-tech start ups - To support innovative technology-based companies with high market-and growth potential by providing soft public money. Thus combining seed financing capital with coaching/consulting of the founders and projects - To support these companies in their task to secure first round financing (e.g. Venture capital) and therefore to increase the pool of available capital, as an important part of providing financing for SME s 19

20 Seedfinancing: capital and coaching Capital: Mezzanine capital (re-payable grant) Risk capital: no securities necessary No shares taken Up to EUR 1 Million per project - milestone Grace period: approx.10 years Payback: capital is paid back only in case of profit and active involvement Coaching/Consulting by Investment managers with strong technological background and industry experience as well as financial expertise to increase and ease access to financing 20

22 Temporary Management (MaZ) Can bridge gaps in know-how with the help of experts Helps to overcome critical competence gaps during the growth phase Up to EUR 50,000 or a maximum of 50% of the costs, external advice in the areas of finances, sales or technology can be funded Run-time of this support measure usually lasts 6 to 9 months. In cases of maternity leave replacement, run-time may be extended to 1 year 22
