24 OCE COLLABORATION VOUCHER PROGRAM Launched in June 2013 Vouchers are credits SME s use to access to expertise and resources from colleges, universities and research hospitals OCE has partnered with the Government of Canada through NSERC, the National Research Council of Canada Industrial Research Assistance Program (NRC-IRAP) and Connect Canada Simplifies the process of applying for funding of industry-led academic research and innovation collaborative projects Responsive to the marketplace Supports high priority sectors including life sciences, transit and aerospace Enhances Ontario SME opportunities for growth and innovation Key recommendation of the Jobs & Prosperity Council Report PAGE 24

25 COLLABORATION VOUCHER PROGRAM 4 STREAMS Voucher for Innovation and Productivity (VIP) $20,000 to address technical challenges that will have a commercial impact, with a focus on export development Voucher for Commercialization (VC) Up to $50,000 for business to commercialize IP developed in Ontario academic research institutions via start-ups or licensing Voucher for E-Business (VEB) Up to $2,500 for main street SMEs to connect with Ontario colleges to take advantage of online tools to drive e-business, market expansion and exports Voucher for Industry Association R&D Challenge (VIA) Enables cross-sector partnerships between industry associations or consortia of companies and academia to address R&D challenges PAGE 25

A collaboration voucher is a credit that small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Ontario can redeem for expertise and resources from Ontario universities, colleges and research hospitals to help make their businesses more innovative and productive. page 26

27 OBJECTIVES OF COLLABORATION VOUCHER PROGRAM The Collaboration Voucher program is designed to Better align research institutions with the needs of SMEs and strategic sectors Create an efficient marketplace for SMEs to access innovation, productivity and commercialization services from research institutions (e.g., undergraduate and graduate programs, research capacity, infrastructure, etc.) Drive increased industry-academic collaborations and provide experiential learning opportunities for students page 27

28 TYPES OF VOUCHERS: VIP Voucher for Innovation and Productivity (VIP) $20,000 to address technical challenges that will have a commercial impact To improve productivity; develop business strategy and export development plan Minimum matching cash contribution of $5,000 from the SME page 28

29 TYPES OF VOUCHERS: VIP page 29 Voucher for Innovation and Productivity (VIP) Whole-of-government approach; one-stop-shop for provincial and federal support Applicants check the appropriate box for additional federal support: Connect Canada university graduate student internship(s) $5,000 minimum per intern; multiple interns permitted NSERC Engage/ARD - one add-on of $25K for first time collaborations between PI and SME / College and SME IRAP referral of approximately $20K for non-academic expertise/service providers to company

32 TYPES OF VOUCHERS: VIA Voucher for Industry Association R&D Challenge (VIA) Indirectly support start-ups, SMEs and larger firms through their industry associations Industry association identifies problem or challenge Call goes out and academic institutions in partnership with SME end-users respond with proposals for projects that address the problem and provide a benefit to all (most) SMEs in that sector page 32
