1 Albert W. Niemi, Jr., Dean of the Cox School of Business Dr. Niemi is the dean of the Edwin L. Cox School of Business at Southern Methodist University (SMU) and holds the Tolleson Chair in Business Leadership. His areas of expertise are economic growth, economic forecasting, and American business history. Dr. Niemi graduated cum laude from Stonehill College with an A.B. degree in economics. He earned the M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in economics from the University of Connecticut. Before coming to SMU, Dr. Niemi served as dean of the Terry College of Business at the University of Georgia from Dr. Niemi is an active teacher and scholar. He has taught more than 15,000 students and consistently has been recognized for distinguished teaching. Dr. Niemi has written six books and more than 200 articles for leading academic journals and business periodicals. Since arriving at the Cox School of Business, Dr. Niemi has increased the school's national visibility. Dr. Niemi is an effective fund-raiser, and he has increased the school's endowment from $78 million to more than $120 million. In addition, he has developed an MBA Global Leadership Program that provides all Cox MBA students with a structured two week global experience. Dr. Niemi is active in the business community and speaks to numerous civic and business groups across the nation. He served as economics editor and wrote a monthly column for Georgia Trend magazine from 1985 to In 1992, he was named the best regular feature writer in the nation by the Association of Area Business Publications. Dr. Niemi serves on the boards of Titanium Metal Corporation, American Plumbing and Mechanical, and Bank of Texas. He also serves on the Dallas advisory board of TXU. Dr. Niemi is involved in the community and serves on the Executive Committee of the Dallas Council on World Affairs, the Board of Directors of the Hong Kong Association of North Texas, and the International Advisory Council of the Greater Dallas Chamber of Commerce. Dr. Niemi has worked extensively in business school and university accreditation. He serves on the Business Accreditation Committee of the American Assembly of Collegiate Schools of Business, and he has chaired or served as a member on Accreditation Review Teams to more than twenty universities including Vanderbilt, William and Mary, North Carolina, South Carolina, Wake Forest, Florida, Texas, Colorado, Syracuse, Monterrey Tech (Mexico), INCAE (Costa Rica), University of Monterrey (Mexico), the Autonomous Technical University of Mexico and IESA (Venezuela). He recently completed a three year term on the Board of Governors of the American Association of University Administrators and currently serves on the Board of Directors of Beta Gamma Sigma and the Business Accreditation Committee of the American Assembly of Collegiate Schools of Business. Dr. Niemi and his wife Maria have two children, Albert III and Edward Charles.
2 Jonathan Sokobin, Deputy Chief Economist of the Office of Economic Analysis Jonathan Sokobin joined OEA in August 1998 from Southern Methodist University. Dr. Sokobin received his doctorate in finance from the University of Chicago. He currently serves as the Deputy Chief Economist and senior financial economist in the areas of corporate finance and accounting policy. Dr. Sokobin provides economic advice, conducts empirical studies of current and proposed SEC policies and provides support for cost-benefit analysis. His areas of interest include selective disclosure and the role of analysts, corporate governance, and securities issuance. His recent research includes working papers on Volume, opinion divergence and returns: A study of post-earnings announcement drift, It s not what you know but when you know it: The role of timing of analyst conference calls and Why issue Rule 144A debt? In addition, Dr. Sokobin participates in major finance conferences and roundtables, presenting his own research, critically discussing the research of others, or providing commentary as a staff economist of the SEC.

4 Wayne H. Shaw Dr. Wayne Shaw is the Robert B. Cullum Distinguished Professor of Accounting at the Edwin L. Cox School of Business at Southern Methodist University. He received a BSB in accounting from Oklahoma City University, an MBA degree from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, and a Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Austin. Dr. Shaw taught at Cornell University and the University of Colorado at Boulder prior to joining the faculty of SMU. He teaches courses in financial accounting, taxation and mergers and acquisitions at the undergraduate, MBA and Ph.D. levels. He also served as the Associate Dean of Graduate Programs and Research at the University of Colorado. Prior to entering academics, Dr. Shaw worked for the Internal Revenue Service. During his tenure with the IRS, he worked in the large case audit group, drug enforcement, appellate, and the Corporate Tax Division of the National Office, specializing in inventory issues and consolidated tax return policies. He was also employed as a tax law specialist for A.M. Pullen & Co. CPAs. Dr. Shaw s dissertation examined the impact of the passage of safe harbor leasing laws in the Tax Reform Act of 1981 on the valuation of both lessor and lessee firms. His dissertation was awarded one of four dissertation awards from the University of Texas in 1985, the only business school dissertation award in that year. His subsequent research has focused on the effect on firm valuation of disclosures of asset restructurings and loan loss reserves, the prediction of bankruptcy, the valuation of initial public offerings, and the valuation implications of financial reporting policies on the value of acquirers in business combinations. Dr. Shaw has been involved in the development and presentation of training materials for major corporate and not-for-profit entities such as Goldman Sachs & Co., Greyhound, WorldCom, Texas Instruments, ClubCorp, and the VHA. In addition, Dr. Shaw has served as an expert witness for the Securities and Exchange Commission and various law firms including Gardere & Wynne.
5 Dr. Michael R. Vetsuypens Dr. Mike Vetsuypens is Professor of Finance at the Edwin L. Cox School of Business at Southern Methodist University, where he teaches corporate finance and international finance in the undergraduate program, the MBA program and the executive MBA program. He holds a Master s and a Ph.D. degree in Business Administration from the University of Rochester and was a Fulbright Fellow during his graduate work. Dr. Vetsuypens research interests include leveraged buyouts, investment banking, the venture capital market, initial public offerings, and CEO compensation. His research has been published in the leading finance journals and has been presented in numerous professional finance conferences. Dr. Vetsuypens is a native of Brussels, Belgium. He speaks English, French, Dutch, Spanish and German. He is actively involved in various Executive Education Programs and has taught managers in the U.S., Europe, Japan and Latin America. His corporate clients include Saudi Aramco, Meridian Oil, EDS, Phillips Petroleum, Sabre, TXU, Chemical Lime, and others. He is the recipient of the 1991 Cox School of Business Excellence in Research Award, the 1996 and 1998 Cox School of Business Distinguished MBA Teaching Award, and the 2001 Carl Sewell Distinguished Service to the Community Award.
6 Jamie Heard, Chief Executive Officer For more than 20 years, Mr. Heard has advised many of the nation's leading institutional investors on corporate governance issues and has written and spoken frequently on a host of corporate governance matters. From 1998 to 2001, Mr. Heard was CEO of The Proxy Monitor, Inc. He served as President of Institutional Shareholder Services from 1991 to He has also served as Deputy Executive Director of the Investor Responsibility Research Center (IRRC).
