The beds within day surgery are available to medics to extend the range of short stay surgical procedures offered to patients. The beds, known as 23-hour beds are for patients who need a short spell of recovery time following day treatment such as day surgery. 2

3 Departmental information The Endoscopy unit provides a full range of services including Upper GI endoscopy, colonoscopy and bronchoscopy. The unit also provides a one stop rapid access rectal bleeding service. The advanced Day Surgery Suite has six theatres. There is state of the art equipment available within the Imaging Department. It is used for those patients requiring x-rays, CT/MRI and Ultrasound scans and barium enemas. The Ophthalmology Department provides outpatient services to both adults and children. These services include specialist diabetic and laser clinics, specialist corneal clinics and specialist oculoplastic clinics. The facility boasts state of the art equipment from the latest MRI scanners to operating theatre technologies delivering clean air filtration systems and wall screens showing x-ray images. 4 Key facts The main hospital has over 20 departments and uniquely has general clinical space designed in such a way that clinics can expand and contract in close proximity to critical adjacencies depending upon need. The building has been future proofed to be easily opened up to a second MRI scanner. The New Hospital has won many top awards including the Prime Minister s Award for Better Public Building, RIBA Stirling Prize Mid-list 2010 and Design and Health International Academy Award for best Healthcare Project worldwide under 40,000m 2.
