1 Welcome to the summer edition of our Patient Focus and Public Involvement newsletter. In this issue we have added a short survey to gather your views on the newsletter, which has been running for just over a year now. Let us know what you like and what improvements you would like to see. The survey will only take you about five minutes to complete. Enter the survey Continued upgrades to the Patient Transport Service From 25 June, patients in the West of Scotland who have a medical condition or mobility need which means they require ambulance transport to get to their healthcare appointments will benefit from a new direct booking and management system which has been already been introduced by the Scottish

2 Ambulance Service in the North. Patients will book ambulance transport directly via a specialist Scottish Ambulance Service contact centre in Cardonald, Glasgow. They will be able to talk to specially trained staff and request ambulance transport to and from their healthcare appointment up to 28 days in advance. The new number to call will be the same as launched in April in the North of Scotland: Anyone hard of hearing can contact the Service via Text Relay on Patients who need support can ask their carer or GP to make the request on their behalf. The areas now covered by the new service in the West of Scotland will be NHS Lanarkshire, NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, NHS Dumfries & Galloway, NHS Ayrshire & Arran, NHS Highland - Ar gyll and Bute area and the Golden Jubilee Hospital. The new service is part of a wider initiative to improve the Patient Transport Service, making it more flexible to better meet patients needs and improving punctuality and journey times. It will allow Ambulance Service staff to speak directly to patients a get a better understanding of their individual requirements. The new patient booking line was launched in the North of Scotland in April this year and will be rolled out across the East of Scotland in October. Designing the Single Clinical Triage Tool In partnership with NHS 24,the Service has started work on the content and design of the Single Clinical Triage Tool. This will be the decision support tool used by both services to triage emergency and out of

3 hours patients, ensuring that patients are appropriately routed to the care they need. A new, single clinical decision support tool means that whichever route is used to access emergency or out of hours healthcare, there will be an improvement in the consistency of the triage of patients. Moreover, a shared system for assessing need will ensure the right response for patients, first time. System users will be able to route patients to a wide range of healthcare pathways, dependent on their individual need. These include specialist cardiac and stroke services, the support of a Community Psychiatric Nurse and care pathways for falls and diabetes patients. Staff training on the new software has now begun. This will begin to establish the structure of the questions call takers will use in the future. This project is on track to go live in the middle of New Air Ambulances will deliver enhanced clinical care The next generation of Scotland s air ambulance service will operate larger helicopters with more room and equipment for enhanced clinical care, as a new contract is due to be awarded to the incumbent air operator, Gama Aviation. The contract will commence in April 2013 and run for seven yea rs with a lifetime cost of 120 million. The new service will comprise the two existing King Air 200c fixed wing aircraft based in Aberdeen and Glasgow. Two new EC 145T2 helicopters, purpose built to Scottish Ambulance Service specifications, will replace the current EC 135 helicopters in Inverness and Glasgow. The y will continue to be supported in Shetland by the medically equipped Super Puma search and rescue helicopter. The cur rent contingenc y support arrangement with Military and Coastguard aircraft will continue. The new helicopters are being built to order and will come into service in 2014, delivering improved range to reach all of mainland Scotland. The Western Isles and Orkney Isles will be within 60 minutes flying time for life threatening emergencies. They are larger and faster than the current helicopters, with more space for clinicians to treat the patient and to ensure relatives and carers can also travel in the aircraft,

4 when appropriate. The EC 145T2 s longer range reduces the need to stop en route for refuelling. Pauline Howie, Chief Executive, Scottish Ambulance Service, said: Our air ambulance se rvice is absolutely vital to the people of Scotland and the new contract will ensure that we continue to maintain the highest quality and service standards for our patients, with significant enhancements to patient care. The contract is being awarded to Gama Aviation after a rigorous consultation and procurement process that started in Our team worked closely with key stakeholders, NHS clinicia ns, patie nts, carers and community groups to de velop the contract specification and key performance indicators. It will deliver a world class air ambulance service that is future proofed and designed to specifically meet the needs of the people of Scotland. The new contract will start on 1 April 2013, with immediate implementation of new resource management and tasking arrangements in the Ambulance Control Centre. The EC 145 helicopters come into operation in The Scottish Ambulance Service provides the only publicly funded air ambulance service in the UK. It flies around 4,000 missions every year, the majority of which are planned inter-hospital transfers. New faces at the Service Two new General Managers have recently been appointed. Garry Fraser is now General Manager of South West & Air Wing Division and Paul Bassett is General Manager for South East Division. Prior to their appointments, Garry was in his new role on an interim basis, and Paul joins the Service from the East of England Ambulance Service, where he has been General Manager for Emergency Operations in Norfolk and Suffolk. Shirley Rogers, Director of Human Resources and Organisational Development, left the Service on 27 April to take up her new role as Deputy Director of Workforce at NHS Scotland. Elinor Mitchell joins us as our new Director of Human Resources and Organisational Development.

5 Public asked to vote in ambulance awards Members of the public have for the first time been asked to take part in the Scottish Ambulance Service annual staff recognition awards by nominating anyone that the y think deserves recognition for their commitment to patient care. The awards, now in their second year, are sponsored by Scotmid and recognise the high levels of dedication and professionalism shown by staff across the Service. The public can make nominations in two categories: Staff Member of the Year and Team of the Year.
