The large field depth of the optical system is essential for exact imaging of less obvious traces in toolmarks or cartridge cases. A precise match of magnification, multiple sample holders and a fine, flexible illumination technique, e.g. coaxial reflected light to minimize reflections on cartridge cases, are also important. This equipment is standard on Leica comparison macroscopes, allowing even extremely faint marks to be visible and depicted at high contrast. For example, the fingerprint of a typewriter or a person s handwriting can be accurately identified using a comparison macroscope. Writing samples, for example, can be masked with red and green filters and superimposed optically. It is not only the origin of documents up to DIN A4 in size that can be accurately and reliably determined; this technology is also well suited for reference comparisons of seals, stamps, bank notes, shares, postage stamps and certificates. The comparison microscopes allow up to 1000 times magnification, which means that details such as the matting and finish of fibers can be clearly recognized.
