4 Sabbatical Report Abstracts for Faculty Leaves Academic Year Lorraine Gersitz, Associate Professor, Librarian The purpose of my leave was to take courses that would help me learn about and become expert in a wide variety of educational technologies and to understand how best to facilitate learning in a non-face-to-face environment, as well as in the physical library, using current educational technologies. I chose the CSUSB online program because it offered courses that would introduce me to a wide variety of technologies as well as introduce me to the growing fields of media theory, online course design, and e-learning. With this knowledge I can move the Cerritos College library in a new direction by implementing innovative new services and revitalize some of our existing ones. I was drawn to CSUSB's mission statement: "to prepare professionals to effectively infuse technology into instruction and to develop instructional materials that transform individuals and their communities." CSUSB's handon program has its students "produce and critically examine computer and video technologies that facilitate learning, access educational resources, and assess instructional effectiveness." One of the most unique aspects of being a student in this particular Instructional Technology program was the unexpected benefit of learning not only about educational technologies but also about learning theories, educational philosophy, media theory, teaching methods, assessment tools, and other education-related topics. This was not hands-on, technology-lab program I expected, but rather a rigorous scholarly program in a field that's rapidly growing. Instead of just focusing on software, programs, and applications I was introduced to both the Instructional Technology and the Education field in great depth. I learned how to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of instruction by applying learning theory to instructional design and selecting the appropriate medium and delivery system to create learner centered courses and curriculums. During my sabbatical I earned the e-learning Certificate and began coursework towards the Educational Technology Certificate. I have already used my new knowledge and skills in the library as well as in my Library orientations and courses. I have created new interactive content for library research guides, added important social interactions in my hybrid Library 100 course, and used Google applications to create surveys, online quizzes, and interactive calendars and documents for the Cerritos College Triathlon Club. Dr. Rena Lou, Associate Professor of Chemistry Dr. Lou extended her previous Ed.D. research at USC in educational technology and science pedagogy and developed research-based computer program projects to teach two chemistry topics. The Chemistry Nomenclature Computer Program and the Chemistry Titration Computer Simulation Program were developed for ipads, assessed through student surveys, and implemented in Experiments 6 and 12, respectively, in the Introductory Chemistry (CHEM 110) course. Students report enjoying using the programs because they provide immediate feedback and helpful hints and are engaging, informative, visual, interactive, and fun to use for learning. Results are promising in that the programs significantly improve student learning compared to traditional approaches. 1
5 Angela Hoppe-Nagao, Professor of Speech Communication, one-semester leave fall 2014 The purpose of this sabbatical leave was two-fold. The first purpose of this sabbatical leave was to complete study and research as part of the requirements for doctoral studies in Educational Leadership at California State University, Fullerton. The dissertation research examined community college faculty cultural intelligence and the impact on conflict management preferences. The second purpose of this sabbatical leave was to use the dissertation research results to inform the design of curriculum and professional development materials related to Cultural Intelligence and conflict management for Cerritos College and the Speech Communication Department. Hagop Najarian, Professor of Art The purpose of my sabbatical leave was threefold. The first part of my leave I completed four postgraduate level courses at CSU LB. I updated my technical skills and conceptual knowledge of contemporary drawing and painting as it applies to the art world, and what is being taught at university level art programs. Taking these courses allowed me to update my lesson plans, coursework and visual library with contemporary themes related to the art courses I teach at Cerritos College. The second part of my leave I developed the curriculum and coursework to offer an Art 122 Color Theory and Composition Course at Cerritos College. The course has been approved by the Chancellor's office and is now part of our Art and Design Studio Transfer Degree. This course is comparable to university and art school courses and is a huge advantage to our students pursuing their art degrees. The third part of my leave was creation of a website for Cerritos College. The website shows the curriculum, assignments and gallery of artwork created by my students in my Art 112/ 213 Life Drawing, and Art 130AB/136 and 231 Painting courses. The website also includes a "Visual Arts Field Trip Manual" that documents current exhibitions shown throughout Los Angeles and Orange County at local art museums and art galleries. This website is available to every student at Cerritos College to access for their courses and for their personal exploration of art exhibitions. The portions of the website containing art exhibition information is also accessible to the campus and the public. Rachel S. Natividad, Professor of Nursing Professor Rachel Natividad's sabbatical leave focused on researching creative, innovative, and interactive concept-based nursing curriculum that will embed technology to support 21st century nursing concepts and skills. She researched and explored emerging approaches to classroom and clinical nursing education implicated by major advances in nursing and health care practices. Her sabbatical year focused on understanding the profound changes in science and technology and how these factors affect the need for instructional and curricular change to nursing education. Professor Natividad's research included several nursing education conferences, as well as site visits to several Associate Degree Nursing programs. Her research expanded her understanding of the theory-practice gap in nursing, which is a gap between what is currently taught in nursing education and what is practiced in the work place. This knowledge was then applied to nursing courses taught, and articulated to the Nursing Department Curriculum Committee for strategic consideration on how teaching practices and curriculum can be revised to better meet the needs of current and future students, as well as the demands of the nursing workforce. 2
6 ABSTRACT FOR SABBATICAL LEAVE APPLICATION Christina Fernandez, Associate Professor of Photography. 100% of academic year, , research and travel. Professor Fernandez's traveled to and researched major photographic archives for the purposes of writing three courses in the areas of Documentary Photography, Photography and Activism and Professional Practices in Photography. One of the goals of the course in professional practices is to broaden the scope of possible career opportunities student photographers are exposed to. In addition, Professor Fernandez created a digital archive of the photographic work that she viewed and researched by creating digital slide presentations of each photographers work. A glossary of terms (to cover areas such as class critique, theoretical approaches to looking at photographs and digital darkroom processes), instruction manuals and diagrams (on camera and enlarger nomenclature, print drivers, profiles and settings) were developed. All of these items were made available to program instructors and students for use in the classroom.
