5 5 National Art Education Association Conference Research Lecture: Photographing the artistic process to encourage student reflection Photo-elicitation interview methods built rapport with high school students in a learner directed class to better understand their artistic process. Students photographed their own artworks and used the images to direct interviews of their artistic process. This session will provide a description of the method, how it was negotiated with a particular group of high school students, and how the method help to understand learning in art for both teachers and students. Graduate Research Session of Seminar for Research in Art Education, Marilyn Zurmuehlen Working Papers, Invited Research Lecture. Presented the purpose, methods, findings and report, and conclusions and implications of my dissertation research: Examining Critical and Creative Thinking of High School Students Making Art in a Learner-directed Art Class. Florida Art Education Association Conference Best Practice Lecture: Photographing the artistic process to encourage student and teacher reflection This session provided a description of how photographs were used to chronologically document and encourage reflection of high school students' artistic processes. A photo elicitation interview method requested that students photograph their work periodically and then provide a detailed description of their thoughts and actions. Examples of resulting series of photographs and student reflections were shared and a discussion welcomed. Research lecture: Critical and creative thinking in the artistic practice of high school students in a learner-directed class I shared the purpose, methods, findings, and implications of a dissertation research project focused on understanding the critical thinking and creative processes of students in a learner-directed high school art class. Specific attention was given to developing interview methods based on student artwork and researcher elicited photographs. Photo elicitation interviews developed rapport with students and served as a guide for students, teacher, and researcher to reflect on student artistic process. Discussed the role of art in their education and lives. Explore the themes: autonomy, dealing with emotions, and making meaning.
