Sometimes we are inside them, sometimes we are outside. Frequently they are fragile beacons, elusive as the Will-oʼ-the-wisp lights of European marshes or the Min-Min of the Australian Outback. There is also the prison in the head, a place of restraint, often dark with shadows and secrets where it can be hard to move across the threshold. In this workshop John Fox and Hannah Fox will explore the journey between these two places. Between hard facts and sometimes harder myths there is a liminal chamber from which a truthful tale may emerge. Participants will be encouraged to realise their own stories and then to construct and animate them in simple and maybe fantastical installations fashioned from bric -a- brac and basic elemental materials. In a full day of experimental, practical investigation we will make a series of small landscapes. Then, in the early evening, present the work in progress to a limited audience. What: Performance The House on Stilts When: September 17, Thursday at 18:00 (app. 1 h) Where: The, Stangevej 1, Østerlars No entrance fee

One paid entrance fee includes all other performances for the rest of the day. DEAD GOOD GUIDES The Nature of Celebration In his illustrated lecture The Nature of Celebration John will present radical theories about a creative society where life, art and ecology fuse together and where the artist may achieve a new and significant role. John Fox is an artist, poet and cultural provocateur who lives in a wooden house on a beach in the North West of England. Here, on the west shore of Morecambe Bay, he is creating the Weather Station a garden installation with wooden whirly-gig sea birds, ferns and grasses, ancient trees and enameled medals for the dispossessed. Also in this same place he is studying ecology, performance and perception. Weather Station (which is being created through an AHRC Senior Research Fellowship in the Lancaster Institute of Contemporary Art at Lancaster University) is located alongside a public coastal footpath, seven miles from the bomb factory in Barrow in Furness, where we still build Trident submarines. In his previous life John, with others, was the founder and Artistic Director of Welfare State International ( ) the legendary celebratory arts company which pioneered fireshows, site specific theatre, carnival operas, and community regeneration through festivals. In 2007 with Sue Gill he started Dead Good Guides to pick up where Welfare

11 State left off, to work on a smaller scale and to train artist- celebrants in new ceremonies for rites of passage. 12 Tinka and Ida are together Flotsam & Jetsam aka Lobster & Jackson and work with interactive, collaborative puppet theatre based on recycled, natural and found materials. HESBJERG DUKKETEATER The Wild Swans A unique finger puppet show where the whole story is set on an old fire place screen behind which the puppeteer leads her puppets in and out of the story accompanied by the music of very special instruments. The show is a heart-wrenching story about a weak king and his evil new queen who transforms all of the king s 11 sons to swans and sends his only daughter Elisa to a farm in the country. When Elisa turns 15, she goes off to find her brothers. During her travels Elisa meets an old woman who tells her that she has seen 11 swans with gold crowns by the river. The river flows to the sea, and it is here that Elisa finds her brothers as they shed their swanskins. She is flown away across the sea in a woven willow net. The first night in a new country, Elisa dreams of the good fairy who tells her what she must do to save her brothers. The fairytale is accented by music, song and light and sound effects. Viggo Sommer plays bugle, flute, clarinet, banjo with bow, riti (African violin) and a one-stringed Indonesian instrument as well as a variety of rhythm instru-

KASPERMATZI S PUPPETTHEATRE The Glade This is suitcase theatre at its best, it s poetical and quite juicy too! It s about birth and development, struggle, luck and love. It s about living together and about self-esteem. Matthias F. W. Kantholz was born in Gera/Thüringen in former East Germany, GDR, in He started some 25 years ago building puppets and scenery for his very own one-man puppet theatre. Originally Matthias was a text writer, he wrote plays, poems, song texts and short stories. The authorities of DDR would not give him permission publicize the majority of his works, so Matthias started performing as Kaspermatzi s Puppettheatre, playing his pieces for both children and adults in marketplaces and as part of family, town and office parties. In 1986 the authorities finally granted him permission to work as a professional puppeteer and since then he has worked independently and as a self-employed author of theatre plays, puppet plays, set painter and puppet maker. Matthias has traveled all over North and Central Germany, later on he has visited Copenhagen and Bornholm. As time went by he became some sort of manager of several theatres. Visiting with a large ensemble of figures and

15 puppets he s been part of puppet festivals and seminars he s been teaching, performing and taking part as a normal participant. Since 1996 he and his family moved to Bornholm. He and his wife started Den Blå Gård (The Blue Farm) where they both have workshops, a gallery, a smithy and puppet theatre. Before moving to Bornholm he was an active member of the German Puppet Theatre union. He has written for the union s newsletter focusing especially on the relationship of western and eastern puppetry ways and traditions. For all ages language: universal WILD THEATRE Fishing for Shadows...is an ingenious interactive puppet theatre garden through which the audience journeys, bringing the puppets to life themselves, creating their own stories and exploring their creative potential. We aim to stimulate the audience s imagination, to start them on a journey and to create an experience that, through their own input and attention leads them to discoveries. The Theatre Garden is a performance space that is both part of the natural environment, and an extraordinary theatrical space where the images have been beautifully created from natural materials, driftwood, recycled wood and found objects. It contains puppets, automata, shadow puppets, marionettes, animations, toy theatre, music and sound effects. The space is designed to be both magical and yet transparent, as there is no backstage and an inquiring audience can discover easily how everything works. Natural lighting, a wind-up gramophone and bicycle operated images fit the themes of walking lightly on the earth, and are part of the practical philosophy that images come to life only through participation and active involvement. The whole experience is transitory and alive, in a state of dynamic balance. It is the beginning of a creative journey which continues after the audience leaves.
