4 Dear Friend, I would like to welcome you to the Italian American Police Society of New Jersey Annual Gala Benefit Dinner Dance. This evening our society will honor several outstanding Italian Americans from our state that have made outstanding achievements in their respective fields. Tonight we will also honor two Italian American Police Officers Nicholas Polidoro and Robert Kane for Valor and Bravery. This past year has been another successful one for the Italian American Police Society of New Jersey. It is only with the support of people like you that our organization can continue to grow to be New Jersey s largest police fraternal organization. I would also like to thank the Executive Board for their tireless work on all of the important events and projects that took place during the past year. Tonight is an opportunity to come together as a group of colleagues, friends and family to celebrate our Italian ancestry. I want to thank Gala Chairman Alan Sierchio and his committee for all of their hard work on making tonight a huge success. Just take a moment tonight to give pause and think of those law enforcement and armed forces members that are in harm s way this evening to protect us and our families. This past year the Italian American Police Society of New Jersey celebrated our Silver Anniversary. We are truly proud of that accomplishment and we are honored to be the premier fraternal police organization in New Jersey. In keeping with our tradition we will once again be honoring several outstanding Italian-Americans and we thank you for joining us as we recognize them. I would like to thank President Schievella, the Executive Board and Dinner Dance Committee for all their help in making tonight s event possible. And I would also like to thank Raf and the staff at The Feista for all their help over the many years in making our annual Gala Benefits truly memorable events. 6 Dear Friends, On behalf of the entire membership of the Italian American Police Society of New Jersey I would like to welcome you to another wonderful evening. Tonight we honor men and women who have made a difference in Law Enforcement and the Italian American Community. Our Man of the Year Joe Piscopo not only is a fabulous entertainer but devotes his off time to help New Jersey Charities, including Operation Shoebox and Bocce Tournament. Assistant Prosecutor Dawn Simonetti, Esq. is known as a tough attorney in the Essex County Prosecutors Office. Dawn is looked upon by many law enforcement agencies in Essex County. Humanitarian of the Year John Bruno, Esq., is a well known attorney in Bergen County and represents Law Enforcement officers in defending their rights. Hudson County Sheriff Frank Schillari became involved in this organization over fifteen years ago and was not just a member. He became involved in this organization providing his support and leadership. Without the support of the membership of the Italian American Police Society many of these events are not possible. Please take a minute and go through this book and read about the events this organization is involved in through out the year. Please join us in our activities. I thank the friends that supply financial support so we can run our Pasta Night and Family Picnic. I thank all of you that have participated or lent a hand in helping this organization be one of the best fraternal organizations in the State of New Jersey or even the world. 7 IAPSNJ Man of the Year Mr. Joseph Piscopo Established 1985 William Schievella President Alan J. Sierchio Television, film, theater, nightclub-they re all fields Executive in which Vice Joe President Piscopo has won the acclaim and affection of millions. For over 25 years, Joe has John Lazzara proven to be one of show businesses- brightest lights. After 1 st Vice stints President as a disc jockey and dinner-theater performer, Joe turned to comedy. In 1980, he was chosen to Jerry Onnembo join a newly formed ensemble charged with one of the 2most nd Vice difficult President tasks in TV history- Replacing the original cast of Saturday Night Live. Alfonse Imperiale By the time he left the show in 1985, Joe had left his 3mark rd Vice on President the program, and the nation, thanks to his wide range of hilarious original characters and celebrity Joseph Simonetti impersonations, from The Sports Guy and Doug Whiner Financial to David Vice President Letterman and, of course, Frank Sinatra, who repeatedly endorsed Joe s portrayal of him, Rose Minoughan referring to Joe as The Vice-Chairman of the Board. At when Arms he starred on Broadway as disc jockey Vince Fontaine in Grease! (Ever the trouper, Joe insisted Sebastian D Amato on performing opening night, despite conditions created Director by of one Communications of the worst blizzards in NYC history). And indeed, history was made as Grease! was the only Trustees Broadway show to open that night! Allan Attanasio Live performances have always been an important Robert part Belfiore of Joe s career. He David Cavaliere has long been one of America s most popular comedy concert attractions, filling Nick Incanella arenas and casino showrooms from coast to coast and in Peter Canada. 8 Mr. Joseph Piscopo continued Joe also pioneered some of the most innovative television commercials on the air. Starting with his unforgettable Miller Lite campaign to GNC, Bally s and even touting Ragu (with his Italian Mom s permission, of course!) Joe has also recently won acclaim for his dramatic guest-starring roles on the NBC drama, Law and Order. You might have also seen Joe as a guest on The FOX News Channel, or co-hosting The Columbus Day Parade each year in NYC with Maria Bartiromo or on The Late Show with David Letterman. Although his unique talents are in constant demand from show business quarters, Joe devotes an extraordinary amount of time to non-profit and charitable activities. His willingness to perform at benefit functions knows no limits. Piscopo received the Volunteer of the Year Award from Big Brothers Big Sisters of Mercer County, NJ and was the keynote speaker at the Big Brothers Big Sisters National Conference in Chicago. In addition, Piscopo has received Community Service Awards from Boys and Girls Clubs in New Jersey and Broward Co., Fla. and is especially proud to have been recognized by Boy s Town of Italy in Rome. As a result of this work, Piscopo started his own foundation called The Positive Impact Foundation, creating positive media for at-risk youth including the syndicated television show for teens, Positive Impact TV. This groundbreaking series mixes education and entertainment to reinforce positive behavior and lifestyles among at-risk youth from both urban and suburban backgrounds. And just this year, Joe has merged his foundation with the Boy s and Girl s Clubs of New Jersey and is their statewide spokesman. Joe also was recently honored by the NYPD Columbia Association. Joe is especially proud to be honored by these heroes of New York s Finest! A proponent of the US Military Forces, Joe was honored to receive the Commendation Medal, the highest civilian award from the state of New Jersey. Joe has performed concerts for the NJ National Guard and the NJ WWII Memorial. Joe s Dad was a Major is the US Army Air Corp in the Second World War. Honoring his Parents and Grandparents, who emigrated to this country, Joe continued the legacy of his heritage by receiving the Ellis Island Medal of Honor. Although Joe s impressive career and public service include several major accomplishments, he insists his proudest achievement of all is twice being named Father of the Year, in 1983 by the National Father s Day Council, and in 1989 by the New Jersey Council of Children s Rights. No matter how busy he may be, Joe always makes sure he has enough time at his New Jersey home, for his children, Joey (an impressive talent, in his own right!), and Alexandra, Michael, and Olivia.

Lazzara John s proud Italian heritage is from Acri Consenza, Calabria on his father s 1 st Vice side President and Florence and Sicily on his mother s side. Jerry Onnembo John is a graduate of Rutherford High School where 2 nd Vice he was President an accomplished wrestler, earning a four year Division I Scholarship Alfonse to Fairleigh Imperiale Dickenson University. He went on to earn his J.D. at Seton Hall 3Law rd Vice School. President At Seton Hall Law School where he earned the Equity Joseph Simonetti Award in 1979 for the highest scholastic average. John s first job was with Financial the Essex Vice County President Public Defenders Office, Adult division Trial Section where Rose he developed Minoughan his skills as a trial lawyer. For the past 30 years John has worked as Recording a partner Secretary in the firm Bruno & Ferraro located in Rutherford. Ronald Sepe During his career which spans 30 years John Financial has prosecuted Secretary in several municipalities and has defended cases across the county. He has lectured on Patrick Minutillo various topics, ranging from white collar crime to cameras Executive in the Secretary courtroom. He is known as one of New Jersey s top criminal defense and DWI trial attorneys. Vincent Nardone John is one of very few attorneys that successfully defended Director his client against the U.S. Government in a highly publicized New Jersey public corruption case. John John Sartori was recently featured on Investigation Discovery after successfully defending a Sgt. At Arms client in a Middlesex County murder case. His work on the case is featured in the book I ll Be Watching You by author William Phelps. Sebastian D Amato Director of Communications John has also represented members of law enforcement at all levels including New Jersey s Police Benevolent Association, Fraternal Trustees Order of Police, State Allan Attanasio Troopers Fraternal Association, and the Port Authority Robert of Belfiore New York and New Jersey. He is actively involved in raising money for David great Cavaliere causes for the poor, cancer research, toys for tots, and donates college scholarships Nick Incanella to outstanding New Peter Serrone Jersey college-bound wrestlers. John resides in Clifton Nat with Faronea his wife Donna and his three children Jonathan, Jacqueline, and Gianna Carli. Schillari Hudson County Sheriff Established 1985 William Schievella President After his service in the United States Navy Frank Alan returned J. Sierchio home and began his law enforcement career with the Secaucus Executive Police Department Vice President in During his career with Secaucus Frank worked all aspects of municipal policing and John Lazzara was also assigned with the Hudson County Prosecutor s 1Narcotics Task Force and the st Vice President FBI Organized Crime Task Force and Hijack Squad. Frank was a highly decorated officer and rose to the rank of police Sergeant before leaving Jerry Onnembo the department in to accept a position as Undersheriff in Hudson County. nd Vice President As Undersheriff, Frank brought his law enforcement Alfonse experience Imperiale with him to the Sheriff s office. In addition to carrying out the constitutional 3 rd Vice mandates President of Undersheriff, he also supervised many of the essential law enforcement Joseph services Simonetti that included the Patrol and Detective Bureaus, B.C.I, the Office of Emergency Financial Vice Management, President and S.W.A.T. He was also instrumental in developing many new and innovative programs Rose Minoughan such as the Bicycle Patrol Program, Child Fingerprint Recording Program, Secretary College Internship Program and Project Livesaver to track and locate missing persons and return them to their families. Ronald Sepe Financial Secretary Frank also forged a partnership with the United States Marshals Service NY/ NJ Regional Fugitive Task Force where members of the Patrick Hudson Minutillo County Sheriff s Executive Secretary Office team up with other state and federal law enforcement agencies to apprehend fugitives wanted for violent crimes. He was an active member Vincent of Nardone the task force and was appointed a Deputy United States Marshal. In spite of Director his position as Undersheriff, Frank continued to work in the field and participated in the John arrests Sartori of fugitives wanted for crimes such as homicide, the attempted murder of a Sgt. Sierchio Executive Vice President John Lazzara 1 st Vice President Jerry Onnembo 2 nd Vice President Alfonse Imperiale O 3 rd Vice President n July 2, 2010 Belleville Police Officers Robert Kane and Glenn Joseph Simonetti Zadroga were on patrol in the Township Financial of Belleville Vice President when they observed a man attempting to burglarize a vehicle on Rose Franklin Minoughan Street. Recording Secretary Ronald Sepe When the suspect saw the officers he ran to a waiting vehicle occupied by Financial Secretary two other people. The vehicle fled at a high rate of speed with the officers in Patrick Minutillo Executive Secretary pursuit. The officers followed the vehicle into the City of Newark where it turned Vincent Nardone onto a dead end street and stopped. One occupant fled Director on foot. They exited their vehicle and approached the suspect vehicle and ordered John the Sartori remaining occupants Sgt. At Arms surrender. The driver of the suspect vehicle turned the car around and accelerated Sebastian D Amato at Officer Kane and struck him. Office Kane fired one Director shot at the of Communications suspect, mortally Trustees wounding him. The second suspect took over at the wheel and continued to elude Allan Attanasio Robert Belfiore the officers. He was apprehended at Broad and Clay Streets in Newark after David Cavaliere Nick Incanella striking a tree and leading the officers on a brief foot chase. Throughout the night he sensed a tension in the crowd Rose that Minoughan he felt was caused by Recording Secretary rival gang activity. Ronald Sepe Financial Secretary At about 10:00 pm Officer Polidoro heard what he believed were guns shots Patrick Minutillo Executive Secretary coming from the crowd and he ran towards the area to investigate. He observed a Vincent Nardone man armed with a handgun chasing a large crowd of Director people and indiscriminately shooting at them. One person had been struck in John the arm. Sartori Officer Polidoro Sgt. At Arms drew his weapon and ordered the man to stop, at which time he looked at the Sebastian D Amato officer and continued to fire into the crowd. Officer Polidoro Director of fired Communications the gunman Trustees mortally wounding him. He then approached the suspect and secured him and Allan Attanasio Robert Belfiore the weapon.
