As a licensed attorney, career law enforcement professional and a lifelong resident of New Mexico, I would bring to the team an extensive background in law, law enforcement and community collaboration. I have nearly twenty-four years of direct law enforcement experience, eighteen of those in supervision, administration and management, while serving with the Albuquerque Police Department. I posses strong communication, mediation and dispute resolution skills. In addition, I maintain a solid background and understanding of the administrative and operational functions, including that of tactical units, within law enforcement agencies. My balanced approach to problem solving as well as to assessing and analyzing any issue presented will utilize my background in law, law enforcement, academics and community engagement which would be an asset to the decision making process as a member of the monitoring team. I have professional experience and background in both the public and private sector. I have worked independently and as a member of a team in a variety of professional settings. As an attorney, leader and an active member of our community I have a vested interest in ensuring Albuquerque engages in professional and constitutional policing. Perea is a career law enforcement professional, and practicing New Mexico attorney. He is an appointed special district attorney for the 13 th Judicial District of New Mexico. He provides advice and counsel on matters of law, policy and public safety. He has served as a senior advisor to candidates for public office at both the national and local level. Mr. Perea has served as a professor of law, public policy (Political Issues), Ethics, Criminal Justice, Controversial Issues in Law Enforcement and Homeland Security courses etc. He is experienced in law enforcement leadership and administration He understands the law and the various cultures that exist in law enforcement organizations. Mr. Perea s experience includes a successful and accomplished tenure as a commanding law enforcement officer, serving nearly twenty-four years with Albuquerque Police Department while being entrusted with increasing professional responsibility. During his career with APD, he rose through the ranks, serving in the role as a commanding officer. During his career as a police officer, he had the opportunity to patrol every area of the city. As an officer he served for several years as a staff instructor with A.P.D s police academy, where taught a wide array of law enforcement subjects to police cadets and police veterans. Mr. Perea was previously certified as a Trainer of Trainers in Community Oriented Policing. Mr. Perea earned his Detective s badge while he was assigned to the Criminal Investigations Bureau and investigated major felony crimes He is active in the law enforcement and professional community. He has served as an appointee by the Albuquerque City Council to the Police Oversight Task Force (POTF). The appointment provided him with a firsthand look into current law enforcement concerns and needs of our community. And is a graduate of Northwestern University s School of Police Staff and Command. He maintains national ties with the law enforcement community. In addition, he is a trained mediator and has international exposure to alternative dispute resolution, through study at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, which has nurtured his ability to work with diverse groups of people.
