Screenwriting Stories impact us in profound ways. Good stories can inspire and touch our souls; they bring freshness, life, understanding, and clarity to our experience. Stories draw us closer to God and to truth, beauty, and goodness. Story, in essence, is at the core of the entertainment that shapes our culture and society. If you aspire to write and bring stories to life, JPCatholic s Screenwriting curriculum will give you the training and network you need to succeed. Program director Christopher Riley is a veteran WGA screenwriter and applies his professional experience directly to your curriculum. You ll graduate with polished screenplays, a professional network, and mentors who care about you personally and spiritually. It s an oft-quoted Hollywood saying: Success isn t what you know, it s who you know. At JPCatholic, you ll have the opportunity to create a powerful network of collaborators, mentors, and investors. 8 Graduate with a polished feature film and TV script Direct mentorship from experienced industry professionals Begin honing your writing craft in your freshman year Deepen your storytelling by studying literature, art, and music A veteran of the Warner Bros. script department, Prof. Riley is the author of The Hollywood Standard: The Complete and Authoritative Guide to Script Format and Style, commonly used as the text for writing classes in universities nationwide. Christopher Riley Professor of Film
Acting JPCatholic s patron Saint John Paul the Great was an accomplished actor and playwright in his youth and believed in the power of performance to communicate truth and beauty, and to positively impact society. JPCatholic s Acting emphasis is dedicated to the training of exceptional actors who are prepared to use their skills in service of the New Evangelization. The acting curriculum is designed to develop body, voice and speech, as well as intellect and spirit, and, following John Paul II s own Christian Humanism, tends to the formation of the whole person, a person who s prepared to bring his or her gifts to the Church and the world. This intensive curriculum is taught by veterans of both the stage and screen. Under their instruction and guidance, actors are prepared to work in theatre, television and film. Master your confidence, speech, expression, and movement Learn how to perform in both stage and screen productions Develop your craft with performance exercises and analyses Direct mentorship from experienced industry professionals Professor Eskey s program was one of the most fulfilling experiences of my acting training. He takes acting for the screen & stage to a spiritual level, incorporating Theology of the Body. Alumna Paige Grube Production Assistant, Launch Photography 9
Film Production film Directing Film Producing Bump+ was a 13-episode web series about three women in crisis pregnancy situations. The show generated national buzz and was featured on websites such as Fox News, Slate, Big Hollywood, and Perez Hilton, while also being discussed on Laura Ingraham s nationally syndicated radio show and many regional and international TV stations. The show was called the most talked-about web series ever created. It made a cultural impact as well; for example, in a poll of high school students, 25% of self-identified pro-choice students changed their minds on the issue of abortion after watching the series. Bump+ exemplified JPCatholic s belief in the power of story to change hearts and minds. Student produced web series seen worldwide Engaging and effective use of new media and film Story and testimony utilized to generate meaningful dialogue Spurred controversy and discussion in national media outlets 10
Red Line is a feature film starring John Billingsley (Star Trek Enterprise, Intelligence) and Nicole Gale Anderson (Make it or Break it, Mean Girls 2) about ten passengers trapped in a subway car after a bomb explodes. Most of the movie was filmed in JPCatholic s soundstage, and over 60% of our student body played a role in making the film. Red Line achieved a wide domestic distribution in Red Box, Netflix, Walmart, Target, and many video on demand platforms, while also reaching numerous international markets in Europe, South America, and the Middle East. What I learned in the classroom prepared me for the work I did on Red Line, but I learned far more working on Red Line than I ever did in the classroom. Figuring out how to collaborate with so many moving parts and dealing with unexpected obstacles during shooting - those are things that you just can t get from a lecture or a textbook. You learn that it s not just about talent, but hard work and long hours. And the hard work and long hours pay off somebody on set will notice, and they ll want to work with you again. Alumna Tara Stone, Writer on Red Line Writer/Project Manager, Ferrari Films, Inc.
Animation Demand for sophisticated animation and modeling work is coming from many different industries: film, TV, video gaming, commercials, and more. Our Animation emphasis will give you the professional skill set to take advantage of these opportunities, in addition to the ability to enhance your value with a deep understanding of story telling and narrative structure. You will build an artistic foundation in drawing, storytelling, CGI, color and design theory, and software like Photoshop and Maya. Building on this foundation, you dive into 3D modeling, texturing, lighting, animation, and compositing, while continuing to dive deeper into the dynamics of how animated films, TV shows, and video games tell stories. Once you ve mastered 3D modeling, you ll move into creating whole environments and exciting characters. Everything culminates in your senior project, where you bring your creations to life in a short film or visual project. 12 Master fundamental art and design for animation Build, rig, and animate your own 3D models and characters Learn industry standard post-processing, editing, & compositing Master visual storytelling to share your voice I have the privilege of being a part of the design team at Drive Studio - I am involved with the entire spectrum of the creative process, including creating concepts, building 3D models, compositing, animating and video editing. Alumnus Nate Sjogren Broadcast Designer, Drive Studio
Game art and Design The video game industry is a global phenomenon with a larger market than both the music and film industries combined. It is one of the fastest growing sectors in the US economy, and has significant impact on our culture, both positive and negative. The Game Art and Design emphasis integrates theory and practice to prepare you for a career in the video game industry. You will be exposed to a variety of design concepts and tools related to creating video games including: storytelling and gameplay design, level design, user experience, interactive game environment and character animation. You ll use tools like Autodesk Maya, Unity 3D game engine, JavaScript, and C# programming. You ll immerse yourself in your creation firsthand in our virtual reality lab. In your capstone experience, you will apply design concepts within different game genres to create a working prototype of a video game. Master fundamental art and design for interactive media Design and build characters, vehicles, and creatures Design and program your own levels and environments Use your game as a platform to tell your story The program is everything I wanted in a gaming degree - the classes are very small and tight-knit, and everything is hands-on, cutting-edge, flexible and all tied into a truly Catholic education. Alumna Tiffany Hall Founder, Guardian Studios 13

New Evangelization This new millennium has ushered in an explosion of new media and other channels through which to spread the Good News of Christ, and St. John Paul the Great called us to embrace these new means of communication to impact the culture in which we live. The New Evangelization emphasis embraces his exhortation and features a seamless integration of Sacred Scripture and theology, new media, and film production. You ll complete a comprehensive curriculum of Scripture, Catholic theology, and philosophy. You ll understand how to teach this material and incorporate it into your own prayer life. You ll acquire the media production and business management training to share the Gospel using new media as a youth minister, Catholic media professional, or lay apostolate entrepreneur. 19 Today, as never before, the Church has the opportunity of bringing the Gospel, by witness and word, to all people and nations. I see the dawning of a new missionary age, which will become a radiant day bearing an abundant harvest, if all Christians, and missionaries and young churches in particular, respond with generosity and holiness to the calls and challenges of our time. As Christ sent forth his apostles in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, so too, renewing that same mandate, I extend to all of you my apostolic blessing, in the name of the same Most Holy Trinity. Amen. - Pope Saint John Paul II, Redemptoris Missio
