2 Free Education on Sustainable Development Bring the world to your classroom The Young Masters Programme on sustainable development, YMP, is a free, global web-based education and learning network. It offers a unique learning experience by connecting youth and building understanding and cooperation about sustainability issues. The challenges of building a smarter and more sustainable world are pressing and urgent. The youth of today are the future of tomorrow and therefore need to be informed and educated with tools to tackle the challenges we face globally. YMP does this through a fun, practical on-line course for high school students. DIPLOMA THE YOUNG MASTERS PROGRAMME on Sustainable Development, year 2012 This document certifies that the above student has participated in the Young Masters Programme on Sustainable Development conducted by the Young Masters Programme Foundation, Sweden developed by the International Institute of Industrial Environmental Economics at Lund University, Sweden. The Young Masters Programme is a global on-line course on sustainable development principally developed for students in secondary high-school with a duration of approximately 20 weeks. In these global classrooms they compare and discuss results of the completed tasks in each mission. They also receive and give feedback in a peer review system. By doing so, both students and teachers gain an understanding of common sustainability challenges and learn about the different local perspectives and solutions to those challenges, which exist around the world In the YMP the off-line work is just as important as the on-line work. As a recurring part of the course, students are asked to leave the computer and investigate sustainability issues in their local community. The YMP is free and it always will be, for schools, teachers, and year old students around the world. So far, more than students from over 110 countries have participated in the YMP and it s growing! But with the free Google translate features, the YMP website can easily be translated from English into more than 50 languages! Upon completion of the course students and teachers receive a diploma.

The YMP is a course focused on finding solutions to social, economic, and environ mental challenges. Students gain tools and learn strategies to help them make necessary changes to tackle pressing sustain a bility issues in their own country. An innovative web design that combines the latest e-learning and social network platforms to make sustainability fun! Interact and collaborate in a global classroom with peer-to-peer learning, making friends worldwide. The web platform has been designed not to require powerful computers or permanent broadband connections to run the programme.

4 Project works leading to real change Testimonials Small marvels. There is hardly any better way to characterize many of the local project works that are carried out by students in the Young Masters Programme. [My five students] have a great desire to participate in the program. Ma M.X.L. Xiuling, teacher, China Every semester, students disseminate reports on project works they have completed in their local communities. The ingenuity and creativity behind many of these projects are truly impressive and the very same goes for the determination by which they are completed. These projects bear witness to how knowledge, com petenc es and proper tools can empower young people all over the world to build a sustainable future. They also demonstrate how global cooperation and interaction stimulate and encourage people to find new answers and solutions. Argentina Florencia, Mariana, Salomé and Victoria from Buenos Aires in Argentina suggested that their school uniforms should be made from organic cotton. Their initiative was accepted and was eventually carried out throughout their entire school district, which has led to a revival for local suppliers of organic fabrics. EGYPT Maram, Sara, Tarek, Abdelaziz and Ola wanted to improve the water quality in their area of Alexandria in Egypt. They started to gather waste cooking oil that would normally be poured into the sewage drain. And then they learned how to make bio-diesel from that oil. Their school bus is now running on converted waste cooking-oil from their school canteen. Indonesia In Surabaya, Indonesia, Vanessa, Devina, Risa and Jane started a project to fight poverty as well as pollution. The students engaged poor families in one of the slums of Surabaya to collect, among other things, old newspapers, which were then recycled into new products and sold. One of the first products designed and launched by the group was a braided basket made out of old newsprint. Eventually, the project has grown and the ideas have spread to other slums. The girls have also worked out their own brand, Selbi, which means Seed in the local language. China Weige, Jiayue, Shaonan from Gezhi High School in Shanghai, China, have found a way to make use of the energy generated by exercise equipment that is placed in parks and residential areas. A small generator was used to save the energy in a battery pack which was used to power LED lights. The clean energy produced this way entails an estimated reduction of CO² by 66 kg/year for each piece of exercise equipment. With equipment s in Shanghai alone this adds up to approximately tons of CO². we were really inspired by each module. Our team work has been excellent and continues... I have learned a lot and the program has helped with my regular school work. The close ties and collaboration with Lund University, and the international scientific community, ensure that the course content is reliable and unbiased. Further, the YMP is one of the main initiatives developed under the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) Chair on Education for Sustainable Development (ESD), which has been held by the IIIEE since As such, the YMP is an integral part of the UN Decade of ESD (DESD, ) led by UNESCO.
