21 Photo-simula on Methodology Statement Photos were taken with a 50mm fixed lens on DSLR camera. Loca ons were fixed using a handheld GPS unit with accuracy of 5m. Reference points in the landscape were also located to assist referencing of photo to digital terrain model. A sequence of photos was taken from each viewpoint and later s tched together to form panoramas. Photos were overlapped by approximately 30%, edges cropped prior to s tching to eliminate edge distor on, and s tching undertaken. A digital terrain model was created incorpora ng 3D models of the proposed development using 3D so ware. The model used contour informa on within the proposed development area. Computer images were generated within the digital model from the same loca ons and direc ons as the photos. The image was overlaid and aligned with the photo using reference points and visual matching. Photos were imported in RAW format to avoid degrada on of the image, requiring resizing to match the computer image. The me and weather when the photo was taken was entered to the programme in order to replicate ligh ng condi ons. Photos represent a range of condi ons including blue and overcast skies, and a range of backlit and front lit situa ons. The wire-frame digital terrain was then switched off leaving the proposed development in its correct loca on and scale rela ve to the photo. Lower parts of the proposed development were erased where they would be behind foreground topography or vegeta on, using Photoshop so ware. The completed photomontage is presented over two pages: o The photos are produced to replicate correct scale at the nominated reading distance (in this case 400mm). (See Figure 01) o Each photomontage is printed across two facing pages to illustrate a FoV of approximately 10 at a reading distance of 400mm. This approximates the field of human binocular vision. (But not peripheral vision which extends to approximately 00 ) (See Figure 0) o Photos were taken with a fixed 50mm lens and the images s tched. Note: Perspec ve is a func on of field of view, not lens focal length. (See Figure 03) Figure 0: Binocular vision is approximately 14 Caveats: o o o o o o Photo simula ons are a tool, not a reproduc on of real life D Photography fla ens an image compared to real life Photography is sta c, whereas the human vision can scan and remember informa on Photographs are passive, but in the real world the eye seeks out detail The human eye can see much more contrast than can be reproduced through photography Physical resolu on of photography is less than that of the human eye Figure 03: Comparison of 35mm lens and 50mm lens 400mm Figure 01: The rela onship between reading distance and real life scale. Two images have been shot from exactly the same loca on. The larger image is from a 35mm lens, and the smaller from the 50mm lens. When overlaid on top we can see the content is iden cal with no distor on. Different lens focal lengths do not alter perspec- ve. 3 August 01 Pg 63
