2 Page 2 San Francisco ArtHaus Gallerists James Bacchi and Annette Schutz are pleased to present DEFENESTRATION An Installation Commemorating the Old Hugo Hotel opening in the ArtHaus Project Gallery on Friday evening, April 4, 2014, 6-8pm. This multi-media exhibition features; video artist Ruth Eckland, painter Maxine Solomon, sculptor/installation artist Brian Goggin and photographer Mel Solomon. The old Hugo Hotel, now an abandoned tenement building, located on Sixth Street in San Francisco s SOMA District was designed by Theo W. Lenzen. Vacant since 1988, it s one defining feature artist Brian Goggins DEFENESTRATION a teetering, out the windows furniture installation, created with the assistance of more than 100 volunteers with funds from the National Endowment for the Arts. And now, plans are being finalized to transform the Old Hugo into affordable and low income rental units. An attempt to revamp the Old Hugo about twenty years ago met complications. All that was accomplished was the demolishing of interior walls and ceilings, leaving the redwood beams, struts, and drifts of shredded plaster over the floors. Stripped of almost all furnishings, remnants of claw foot bathtubs, sinks and broken toilets inhabited the old hotel like ghosts of residents past. Over the years, squatters have added graffiti and other signs of transient stays. Joining sculptor Brian Goggin, artists Ruth Eckland, Maxine Solomon and Mel Solomon gained access to the Old Hugo and collectively capture the neglected history of this iconic structure from the inside out. Brian Goggin, an artist of infinite sculptural jest, continues to leave his mark on the West Coast with his whimsical and vibrant layering of found objects and chaosprovoking sculpture. Goggin s most recent project, And My Room Still Rocks Like a Boat on the Sea (Caruso s Dream), a collaboration with artist Dorka Keehn, can be seen and heard at AVA a 17-story high-rise on 9 th Street between Market and Mission Streets.

3 Page 3 Ruth Eckland, Video Still, Old Hugo Hotel Ruth Eckland is a video artist who exhibits her single channel videos and installation pieces in museums and galleries throughout the U.S. and internationally. Exhibitions include; A.I.R., New York, San Jose Museum of Art and the Institute of Contemporary Art in San Jose, The National Museum of Singapore, Fluctuating Images Gallery, Stuttgart, Germany and Nakkas Gallery, Istanbul, Turkey.

4 Page 4 Maxine Solomon, Defenestration, Old Hugo Hotel #3, 58 x40, oil and found wallpaper on canvas For years, when passing the Old Hugo Hotel, Bay Area artist Maxine Solomon thought about creating paintings of the interior of the iconic structure, immortalizing its fascinating history and documenting those who had passed through its doors. Solomon is represented in San Francisco by ArtHaus. She has exhibited extensively in the Bay Area as well as internationally at museums, galleries and universities. Shows include; The Ghana National Art Museum, The Triton Museum, Los Gatos Art Museum. Solomon and her work has been featured in the San Francisco Chronicle and Marin Magazine.

5 Page 5 Mel Solomon, Defenestration 2 nd Floor Remnants, Digital archival Print Mel Solomon s visits to the Defenestration Building have resulted in a rare photographic documentation of the interior of the Old Hugo Hotel. His reputation as an emerging fine art photographer has led to exhibitions at; The Berkeley Art Center, The Falkirk Art Center, 1:00 AM and Gallery 28 in San Francisco. Prior to his fine art photography career, Solomon was a successful travel photographer, exhibiting in international venues in Africa, Europe and Asia. ArtHaus will host an Artist/Opening Reception for DEFENESTRATION on Friday evening, April 4 th from 6-8pm. Concurrently on exhibit in the Main Gallery, Mix Masters works in various media by gallery and guest artists.
