4 oe of our first success stories. DAN S STORY: WE CAN T SAY ENOUGH ABOUT UNITY IT WAS OUR HOME FOR MONTHS AND MONTHS. Da satillo was oly 21 i ovember 1990 whe he was hit by a car outside his gates home. after emergecy surgery, he was i a coma, ad his family had o idea how log his jourey to recovery would be. We thought after his surgery that he d wake up ad start walkig ad talkig agai. We had o idea that it would be years. Da s father, Ady, tells us about those early days We did t kow about uity at first this was early 20 years ago. the hospital we were i wated to sed Da out of state! that would have bee a icredible burde o him ad our etire family my wife ad me, ad Da s wife ad their baby daughter. We heard about uity (which was st. mary s at the time) through a fried. Da was still i a coma whe Dr. mary Dombovy came to evaluate him ad agreed to accept him ito uity s program. We re so thakful that we had a place to go like uity. Da made strides immediately. i ca t say eough about uity it was our home for moths ad moths. Da s wife, Kristie, describes the experiece Da spet five days a week i therapy for eight log moths. everyoe o the staff was woderful, from the urses to the therapists to the doctors. they were awesome, carig, ad soothig they kew exactly how to hadle every challege. We ve actually formed lastig relatioships with some of the staff ad we were eve ivited to a weddig! We still visit ofte: they kow us ad always ask about our family you ever feel like a umber. today, Da ad i have two daughters. He works at Wegmas ad is doig amazig. He works hard, ad it s thaks to the staff at uity that he s bee able to achieve all that he has.

7 ANTHONY S STORY: THE REAL MIRACLE WAS THE DOCTORS AND STAFF WHO TOOK CARE OF ME. athoy, a rochester police officer, was shot i the back of the head while respodig to a call i Jauary after emergecy surgery ad about two weeks of itesive care, he was trasferred to uity. Athoy s mom, Joae, tells us his story uity came highly recommeded they have the most advaced rehab facilities available. Dr. Dombovy was woderful, ad the therapists were very good to him. they push just hard eough ad he s happy with the progress he s made. i fact, he has amazed all the doctors ivolved i his treatmet! the uity staff was friedly, extremely helpful, ad accommodatig. they eve set up a small hospitality room because we had so may family, frieds, ad fellow officers comig to visit but athoy eeded to stay quiet ad rest! the support from the whole commuity has bee fatastic. athoy came home april 1, ad he s still udergoig therapy. He hopes to be back o the force ext year Ad Athoy himself says: the real miracle was the doctors ad staff who took care of me. i m here today because of them ad all they ve doe for me.

8 MIKE S STORY: THE STAFF COULDN T HAVE BEEN MORE ENCOURAGING AND SUPPORTIVE. mike was workig as a egieer at martec idustries, a maufacturig compay, i Jauary 2004 whe he suffered a brai aeurysm. after a moth-log hospitalizatio, he came to uity to start the log jourey back. Whe he arrived, mike could t walk or feed himself, ad could barely talk. Mike s wife, Sue, shares their experiece with Uity We were very usure about mike s future whe we first got to uity. i remember him holdig his shirt i his hads, ad ot kowig what to do with it. He just did t realize how sick he was. i tried to stay strog throughout this ordeal, but that momet really got to me. But he kept improvig withi two weeks, he was walkig. He was goig through speech, physical, ad occupatioal therapy every day. they worked him hard, ad he did remarkably well. oe of the best examples of the carig staff was whe the speech therapy departmet was helpig mike sig a Valetie s Day card for me. it made me cry. after three ad a half weeks at uity, mike cotiued with outpatiet therapy for aother six weeks or so. By april, he was drivig agai ad wet back to work part-time; by august, he was back at work full-time. Ad Mike tells us the staff was great they re really good people, ad they could t have bee more ecouragig ad supportive, especially Dr. mary Dombovy. she was fatastic. We still stop by uity every oce i a while to thak them agai!

11 TYLER S STORY: WE KNEW WE WERE IN THE RIGHT PLACE. tyler was just eight years old whe he sustaied a traumatic brai ijury at a child s party. after emergecy surgery ad more tha two weeks i a Pediatric itesive Care uit, tyler was trasferred to uity. Tyler s mom, Daw, tells the story of their family s experiece with Uity a tragedy like this affects the etire family my husbad ad i ad our two daughters were at uity every day. We tried to have dier together every ight, tryig to maitai our family coectios. We received a lot of support from our family ad frieds, ad from the uity staff. While the mai focus is aturally o the patiet, the staff made sure that the whole family felt welcome ad ivolved i tyler s treatmet. Whe we first got to uity, tyler was i a wheelchair his left side was paralyzed ad he was t talkig. But he had a positive attitude, worked very hard, ad did therapy every day to help regai the use of his motor skills. our whole family saw the day-to-day gais. as he progressed, tyler was able to go home for a few hours at a time. it was so scary to do this o our ow but the staff really helped with the trasitio ad the modificatios we eeded to make at home to accommodate his eeds. He has cotiued to do outpatiet therapy ad home exercises, ad has eve goe back to school. the uity team has helped tremedously throughout this process; we ve had very ope commuicatio throughout the years. tyler is here today because of all the support we ve had. Dr. Dombovy ad the staff totally back everythig we ve doe. they re compassioate, friedly, warm, ad above all, kowledgeable. We kew we were i the right place.

13 GABRIELLE S STORY: SHE DOESN T LET ANYTHING SLOW HER DOWN i may 2007, seve-year-old gabrielle was hit by a car. the accidet left her with both a brai ijury ad a broke leg. she was i a coma for early two weeks, ad could t walk or talk whe she was first trasferred to uity. Gabrielle s mom, Nicole, tells us about their experiece with Uity eve though she was t walkig or talkig, withi 24 hours, the uity staff had her movig aroud. gabrielle was at uity for a moth, ad i ca t say eough about the doctors ad staff. the etire staff was woderful at brigig all of the treatmets ad procedures to her level, ad egagig her i her recovery. from aaro i physical therapy who used a balleria aalogy to help her do o-weight-bearig exercises to the speech therapists that used picture boards, everyoe was just woderful. gabrielle has come a log way. she s a real outdoor girl: she loves to go to the park ad climb the rock wall. she does t let aythig slow her dow
