Network traffic was growing 30-40% annually, and traditional approaches to cost containment were inadequate for addressing such rapid volume growth. In 2014, adidas began implementing a redesign of its network to facilitate offloading of WAN traffic to broadband Internet, and has been gradually shifting a growing range of traffic to the Internet. This case study will examine how adidas is implementing its WAN offload strategy, what their experience has been, and how the network redesign is influencing adidas' global IT strategy. Pearson s costly MPLS network was poorly suited to deliver public cloud services; low bandwidth and high latency impaired application performance. In 2012, Person embarked on a sweeping Internet first redesign of its global WAN, largely eliminating its legacy MPLS network in favour of dual provider DIA. This case study will explore why Pearson chose this unconventional approach, as well as the challenges encountered and benefits achieved as it optimised its network for cloud applications.
