Why do I think and behave the way I do? 3. How has our understanding of psychology changed over time? 4. What is the purpose of scientific research in psychology? This assignment should take between 3-5 hours to complete. Why should you do this? We will be discussing these big ideas during our first unit. You will be tested on this material the first day of class, so read carefully and provide complete answers. You are expected to incorporate your understandings from these text into assignments at the beginning of the year. Assignments the first 2 weeks of class will look like this: A. Week of Sept 1: Students can discuss important questions (big ideas) citing evidence from the text. B. Students can incorporate understandings of safety and trust into extended definition assignment. 5 7. The book outlines a few key descriptive methods psychologists use to answer research questions. These methods allow psychologists only to describe behavior. Explain them below: Research Method Observation (Naturalistic and Laboratory) Description Case Studies Surveys 8. There are two methods that allow psychologists to find relationships, correlations and experiments. a. What is a correlation? b. Provide an example of two variables that might be correlated. c. How does the correlation coefficient measure the relationship between two variables? Be sure to discuss direction and strength of the relationship. 9. Experiments are an extremely important research method in the field of psychology. You will be asked many questions about this method on the AP test. Read the section on experiments carefully and be sure to answer the questions below completely. a. What is an experiment? b. What is an operational definition of a variable? c. What is the independent variable in an experiment?
6 d. What is the dependent variable in an experiment? e. What are the experimental and control groups in an experiment? f. What is random assignment and why is it important? 9. Experiments aren t without problems. If these problems aren t addressed, the results of the experiment are not valid. Identify some of the common problems with experiments and how they can be solved: a. What is the placebo effect? b. What is the experimenter effect? c. How can these problems be solved by single-blind and double-blind studies? Ethics of Psychological Research 10.
