Gregory J. Feist & Erika Rosenberg. Mc Graw-Hill Publishers. (this textbook is bundled with the and Connect System). It is most cost efficient to purchase it at the GWC Book Store. There is a temporary subscription to Connect so you can keep up on the assignments pending financial aid. COURSE DESCRIPTION This course is an introduction to the scientific study of behavior. Topics include an exploration of major psychological theories and concepts, research methodology, memory, motivation, emotion, personality, intelligence, psychobiology, perception, cognition and consciousness, learning, development, social psychology, psychological disorders and therapeutic approaches, and applied psychology. UC Credit Limitations: Psych G100 and G100H combined-maximum credit, one course. Graded or Pass/No Pass option. C-ID PSY 110. THE STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES 1. Explain the six criteria that are used to define normal verses abnormal behavior. 2. Explain the following contemporary perspectives on behavior: biological, psychodynamic, learning-based, humanistic, cognitive, and sociocultural, clinical, counseling, forensic, community, organizational, school, health. 3. Analyze the various methods used to study behavior, including the naturalistic observation method, the correlational method, the experimental method, kinship studies, the epidemiological method, and the case-study method. 4. Describe the major subdivisions of the nervous system, peripheral nervous system, the autonomic nervous system and the general function of each system subdivision. 5. Contrast and compare the learning theories of classical conditioning, operant conditioning, and social learning. 6. Explain the effects of nature verses nurture on behavior and abilities. 7. Describe the use of psychological tests and physiological measurement in assessment, including the use of brain-imaging techniques.
2 8. Describe the different types of mental health professionals and the basic features of psychotherapy and drug therapies. COURSE INSTRUCTOR Please begin your journey in this course by introducing yourself on the Discussion Board, complete the learning surveys you will find on the left side links on Blackboard (print out the surveys and complete them on paper). The surveys are called the Personality Spectrum and Multiple Pathways to Learning. The Personality Spectrum is a simplified version of the Myers-Briggs and the Multiple Pathways to Learning is an assessment of your 8 Multiple Intelligences. I find learning style surveys very helpful because, although I love to learn, school was frustrating at times because I do not learn well from lectures which is not a good thing in college. Howard Gardner introduced his Multiple Intelligences theory in 1983 which has taught us how to work more effectively with our learning styles. I hope these surveys will help you get more out of the time you invest studying. A little bit about myself I have an M.A. in Counseling and an M.A. in Health Science and I have been teaching at Cal State University, Fullerton in the Child and Adolescent Studies Department since Typically I teach the Fieldwork Practicum, Adolescent Pregnancy and Parenting, Life Span Development, Parenting in the 21 st Century, Child Development (Birth to Age 8) courses, and at GWC I have taught PSYC G116 and PSYC G 280. At Orange Coast College/Irvine Valley College I have taught Child Development (Birth to Adolescence), as well as Socialization of the Child and Child Abuse Identification and Referral as weekend courses. I am excited to bring to this course my 26 years of experience working with children and families! I have included an audio message in the Syllabus/Instructor Info folder with my career/academic background (CAS Personal background) for you to hear my story. You will need to have Itunes/MP3 capability to hear this audio message. COURSE POLICIES DEADLINES ARE CRITICAL IN THIS COURSE: Complete exams and turn in all assignments online by 11PM on either Wednesdays or Saturdays (depending on the assignment or exam) and the dates on the syllabus but I would suggest working ahead of this deadline in case you have any computer or internet problems or have to work. IMPORTANT: discussion postings are due three days before discussion replies to allow other students to read the postings. Contact me IN ADVANCE if you have a conflict with a deadline or exam date. Work can always be done early but you need prior approval to turn in anything late. All deadlines are listed on the calendar of this syllabus. Deadlines are important in this course. If you miss a deadline you will NOT receive any credit or lose points for being late. If you have verifiable emergency or immediate family death I will allow you to take the missed quiz or submit the assignment within 1 week of the due date. If you do not have verification of the emergency or death you cannot submit the assignment or take the exams late.
3 BLACKBOARD AND CONNECT Check the Blackboard course website each week for course updates or any required printouts and assignments that need to be completed prior to class and to stay up-to-date on any necessary course changes. Students must have access to the internet and purchase the McGraw-Hill Connect Access with the textbook or e-book. The link to the course s Connect/ site will be provided on Blackboard. Students will not be able to continue with the class if they do not have access to Connect for this course. There is an option to Start a Free Trial prior to registering your access that is typically for 2-3 weeks. This option is useful for students awaiting financial aid, those who may drop the class, or those who want to try the Connect Plus/ebook before they buy. When the free trial expires, you can simply purchase the access and continue with all of your previous saved work. This way you can start getting assignments completed. Information on using Connect will be provided on-line. WRITTEN ASSIGNMENTS & WEEKLY CONNECT ASSIGNMENTS & EXAMS Discussion Board (DB) Assignments To ensure the reading of the required materials and to assess your understanding of the course content, there will be various DB assignments based upon the assigned text reading. No late post/replies will be accepted. Students must submit the Post and Reply on Blackboard on the scheduled due dates. Connect and Weekly Assignments The McGraw-Hill Connect online learning platform will be an essential part of this course. McGraw-Hill s Connect is a web-based assignment and assessment platform that helps connect students to the coursework through Blackboard Learn. You will receive an access code when purchasing the new textbook from the GWC Bookstore. Purchasing the textbook at the bookstore will give you the access code. View the McGraw Hill Connect Introductory power points prior to registering your access code. EXAMS Connect access will involve homework and Exams. is an intelligent learning system based on cognitive mapping that diagnoses students knowledge of a particular subject then creates an individualized learning path geared towards student success in the course. It offers individualized assessment by delivering appropriate learning material in the form of questions at the right time helping students attain mastery of the content. Students will need access to a computer connected to the internet to complete the Homework, Exams and Extra Credit. Computers are available at the GWC library. There will be four exams and one cumulative final exam on-line. INCOMPLETES An incomplete will only be assigned in the case of an emergency, such as long term hospitalization, which occurs after the deadline to withdraw. The student must currently have a passing grade and official documentation will be required. Incompletes will not be given in the
4 case of vacation plans, job conflicts, social engagements, or forgetting when the final is. ACADEMIC INTEGRITY All students are expected to maintain the highest standards of academic honesty. There will be no explanations accepted for plagiarism, cheating, presenting false information, or any other acts which suggest a student has not fulfilled their academic responsibilities in this course. Anyone involved in any act of plagiarism, cheating, or sharing answers with other students, will minimally receive a failing grade on that assignment/exam. All academic dishonesty will be reported to the college, and maintained in a permanent college-wide file, which may result in expulsion from the college or other disciplinary action. Any second violation of academic integrity in this course will result in an automatic F in the course, regardless of what grade might have been earned otherwise. CITATION, APA FORMAT & PLAGIARISM For your discussion board assignments everything must be written in your own words. You will not be using direct quotations, and must paraphrase and cite every fact and idea you get from another author. It is very important to fully understand how to cite and how to paraphrase so you should review the material on-line and view the following website: All assignments and exams must be entirely independent work, and may not be shared or collaborated on in any way. GRADE CALCULATIONS Grades will be determined on a straight scale. This means that grades will be based on the percentage of points earned out of the total points possible. The grading scale is: 90% and up = A; 80% and up = B; 70% and up = C; 60% and up = D; below 60% = F Final grades will be based on the points earned out of: Four Exams 100 pts X points Two Discussion Board Post/Reply 20 pts X 2 40 points Final Exam 200 X 1 (cumulative) 200 points Weekly HW 10 pts X points Total Points Possible 800 points Extra Credit: 10 pts (to be announced on-line) A FEW MORE THINGS: On-line courses are challenging and you should plan in advance your due dates and assignments.
