2 MAD FOR MAGNUMS THURSDAY, MARCH 13, 2008 Magnums are considered by many serious wine enthusiasts to be the most favorable format for the enjoyment of wine. Conventional wisdom states that wine ages better in larger bottles, so magnums offer a good balance between practicality of size and optimization of content. Put more frankly, magnums are nice to have in the cellar because there is simply more juice to go around than your traditional 750ml bottle offers. However, magnums tend to be considered an occasional bottle and in all of the wine events I attend it is surprisingly uncommon that many large format bottles are opened. Not too long ago over dinner, a good friend of Zachys was discussing the pile-up of magnums he was dealing with -- he desperately wanted an opportunity to enjoy some relief. He then made us a proposal that could not be refused. If we were willing to pick up the tab for dinner and find fifteen or so willing participants, he would supply the wine, all en magnum. Knowing his collection well, he being a frequent buyer of ours and having demanding tastes for only the best, we immediately agreed to his terms and set about planning the event. A few weeks later, our magnum-only dinner was held at Asiate restaurant at the Mandarin Oriental hotel in the Time Warner Building. The kitchen did a superb job of creating a menu that complimented the broad spectrum of wine served, yet retained Asiate s inspired, creative fuse of Asian and French culinary traditions. The wine service was handled by the very capable Richard Hales, Mandarin Oriental New York s Wine Director, whose deft hand kept the evening moving and the wine flowing. The picturesque view of Central Park from the thirty-fifth Floor of the Time Warner building was no small addition to the experience. We began the evening with two beautiful magnums of Salon 1985, which displayed a vibrant, youthful character of chalk, stony minerals, fresh citric fruit, and typical Salon class. It is hard to imagine a better beginning. We then moved on to a stunning Bollinger RD 1976, which was generously offered by a Champagne-loving guest in attendance. This bottle was an early candidate for wine of the night and displayed a personality of gorgeous mature ripe peaches and citrus notes, earthy minerals, butterscotch, coffee, classic aged Champagne nuttiness, yet was still fresh a really great example of mature Champagne. Moving on to dry whites, a magnum of Montrachet Marquis de Laguiche Drouhin 1996 had no oxidization issues and was drinking great, albeit young. A funky, marly chalk personality with notes of cotton candy, new French oak, candied fruit, and vibrant, crisp acidity marked this wine. We then enjoyed a great example of Batard Montrachet Ramonet We lucked out again - no preox here. Instead, stunning and pristine, characteristic minty Ramonet signature with clean stony minerals, lots of acidity, fresh mangoes and lemon rind. Two great Grand Cru white Burgundies defying the odds were enough. It was time to move on to the reds. We stuck with Burgundy and enjoyed a fresh, young example of Corton Clos des Corton Faiveley 1985, which had lush ripe berry fruit, violets, dark soil, and coffee grounds. It was a good start, but was quickly overshadowed by the outstanding Musigny Vieilles Vignes Comte Georges de Vogue It seems that many of the red Burgundies from 1993 are starting to come around and this example was nothing short of stunning, giving beautiful, silky Musigny notes of stony minerals, fresh roses, and ripe strawberries. To be sure, this wine still needs time to unfurl itself, but is revealing the greatness of the vintage and the heights that Vogue can reach. Musigny JF Mugnier 1993 provided an interesting comparison with floral, blocky fruit, but was overshadowed by its more dynamic predecessor, lacking the same depth of the Vogue. A heart-stopping bottle of Vosne Romanee Cros Parantoux Henri Jayer 1988 was next and instantly became a crowd favorite. Gorgeous, pure crystalline notes of minerals, berries, and earth marked this elegant wine that did not stop short of an emotional experience. Chambertin Clos des Beze Rousseau 1988 was next and suffered a bit from being served next to the Jayer, seeming a bit clunky and muddled. Still, on its own it was a success showing dense earth notes, wilted rose petals, limestone, and strawberry/cherry mélange. A good, but nondescript Gevrey Chambertin Clos St. Jacques Jadot 1993 completed the Burgundies and probably would have been more noticeable had it been served at the beginning of the red Burgundy group. Bordeaux was next and why not start with Chateau Mouton Rothschild 1989? This was a very impressive example of a wine that does not get a lot of attention, giving a medium weight expression of classy Mouton minerals, cedar, spice, dark fruit compote, and herbs. We then stepped it up with Chateau Petrus Don t forget that we are drinking magnums here, and this was a youthful, compact example showing bubble gum, grilled meat, round berry fruit, band aid, luscious ripe Pomerol fruit, and cedar. A great Petrus with lots of time ahead. As a logical match, Chateau Latour 1970 was served, which is a personal favorite of mine when showing well. This magnum was no exception and provided characteristic cedar, lead pencil, cassis, and berry fruit. 3 We had made it through the dry wines and on to Dow 1963, which was nothing short of classic, maturing Port, giving notes of licorice, mocha chocolate, and berry thatch fruit. We finished the evening on the sweet note with a tête-à-tête match-up of great, modern Sauternes: Chateau d Yquem 1975 vs I have always been partial to the classic, balanced character of the 75, which consistently gives terrific ripe, exotic tropical fruit without being overbearing or cloying. This magnum was no exception and confirmed my love of the wine. The 76 was also great and was marked by heavy, mouth coating round botrytis fruit and less acidic structure than the 75. I suppose it is a matter of stylistic preference, but the 75 won out again for me and is one of the great modern Yquems in my humble opinion. Very unfortunately, our co-host fell ill a few days prior to the event and elected not to join us. However, he instructed us to soldier on without him and we took the orders without question. A very generous man indeed; plans are already in the works to repay his generosity. Let the madness continue.
