2 The purpose of the Consortium of Michigan Veteran Educators is to serve all Michigan public community colleges and universities in their efforts to support student veterans, military service members and their family members. Further, to support by yearly meetings, informational outreach, sharing of best practices, and advocacy to outside organizations and agencies, the educational advancement of those who have served or who are serving in the Armed Forces of the United States.
3 Consortium s Primary Goal To serve as a representation, outreach and educational resource to college and university staff that serves student veteran and military populations.
4 Secondary Goal To increase the number of service members, and their families, who use Veterans Administration educational benefits available to them. As part of this critical goal, the members of the consortium are also focused on ensuring that veterans who enroll in Michigan s public colleges and universities receive the support they need to successfully complete a degree or certifying program which will lead to gainful employment and productive lives.
5 Best Practices / Professional Development Committee Steering Committee Student Veteran/Military & Family Member Support Committee Recruiting & Outreach Committee
6 Best Practices / Professional Development Committee The Best Practices and Professional Development Committee will serve as convener of college and university staff to provide for professional development opportunities and sharing of best practices to better support the student veteran/military population.
7 Goals Identify, assess, and communicate Best Practices. Identify, create, and disseminate Veteran related Professional Development. Make recommendations to eliminate or reduce institutional barriers.
8 Vision The Committee s vision is to become a Professional Development Clearinghouse to provide training opportunities in the following area: Recruitment Retention Graduation & Post Graduation External
9 Student Veteran/Military & Family Member Support Committee This committee sets out to: Create a Best Practices Guide identifying practices that are being used on our state campuses. In addition, other resources will be highlighted to CMVE members e.g., ACE s Toolkit. Create a Checklist for Military Students to help them stay focused and on track (is being used already on some campuses).
10 Student Veteran/Military & Family Member Support Committee This committee sets out to: Help initiate efforts to educate campus communities regarding issues & needs Establish procedures to measure the success of military and Veteran students. Offer a yearly student Veteran association conference.
11 Recruiting and Outreach Committee The goals of the Recruiting and Outreach Committee are to: 1) Increase awareness of public higher education options to military and veterans in Michigan, and 2) Support Michigan colleges and universities in their efforts to recruit military and veteran students.
12 Stand Together! Improve vet-friendliness -Gain recognition for the State of Michigan Bring military and vet students to Michigan Not competing with each other Keep the best interests of the veterans in mind
13 Council for the Advancement of Standards in Higher Education (CAS) CAS Mission for Veterans and Military Programs & Services: Provide, facilitate, or coordinate programs and services for student Veterans, military service members, and their family members. VMPS must identify student Veterans and military service members and establish a community that connects and supports this population.
14 CAS Institution-Wide Practices Collaboration across departments to streamlining administrative procedures Establish a Veteran advisory group Facilitate development of campus-wide community of student Veterans, service members and their family members Provide education & training for faculty & staff on issues relevance to student Veterans
15 CAS Student Veteran Organizations provide support and advisement for Student Veteran Organizations.
16 CAS Support Services Admissions support Orientation Financial aid support Housing and logistics Advising and mentoring Learning communities Current information on education benefits for Veterans, service members and their families.
