30 What Is PLA? Prior Learning Assessment (PLA) is a term used by educators to describe the process of evaluating knowledge and skills in order to award college credit for learning from: On-the-job learning Corporate training Independent study, such as MOOCs Military service Volunteer service

31 Four Approaches to PLA Standardized exams (CLEP, Excelsior College Examinations, DSST, UExcel) Challenge exams on campuses Evaluated non-college programs ACE Evaluates military training Individualized assessments portfolio and performance-based Conducted by some colleges and by CAEL s LearningCounts.org

32 Relationship between PLA and College Graduation Baccalaureate students who earned PLA credit are 2½ times more likely to persist to graduation.
