1 PASTORAL FORMATION INSTITUTE Higher Education Award in Adolescent and Youth Ministry Course Goal The course aims to provide holistic formation and training to all those who are currently involved or who desire to become involved in youth formation programmes within a Church-related ambience. Awards and level Course Code : IFP/AYM5 Final Award : Higher Education Award in Adolescent and Youth Ministry Duration : 2 years part-time (112 hours taught courses) Level Rating : Malta Qualification Framework (MQF) Level 5 Teaching Institutions : Secretariat for Catechesis and Kummissjoni Djoċesana Żgħażagħ in collaboration with the Pastoral Formation Institute Awarding Institution : Pastoral Formation Institute Certification : A Sealed Certificate together with a Diploma supplement after successful completion of the course. 1 Institutional Profile and Roles The Pastoral Formation Institute (PFI) has the prime purpose of providing a holistic formation, as required by all the members of the Catholic community in Malta. In its effort to reinforce the identity of this community of brethren, the Institute intends offering 1 Students will be considered to have successfully completed the course after attending at least 2/3 of the lecture sessions and obtaining a pass in all formative assessments. 1

2 opportunities for (a) permanent formation and (b) spiritual experiences; the Institute also intends (c) promoting professional formation of pastoral workers for the performance of their ministries and other work; (d) providing experiences of dialogue with Maltese society. Through the decree published on the 28 th September 2007, the Archbishop authorised the PFI to: _ issue certificates for the courses of pastoral formation; _ prepare schemes of levels and standards suitable for the different courses; _ ascertain that the level, contents and methodology of the courses provided by the all entities within the Diocese are of a satisfactory standard. In order to implement the decisions of Vatican Council II on the catechetical instruction of adults and young people, in January 1967, Archbishop Michael Gonzi gave national status to the Catechetical Commission which had been for some years striving to organize catechesis in the diocese. By the decrees of the 11 th May, 1988, and of the 4 th July 1998, the Catechetical Commission was restructured and became the Secretariat for Catechesis. The Secretariat is responsible for: _ the organisation and coordination of Catechesis in parishes and Religious Education in Schools _ the preparation and publication of syllabi and textbooks to be used Catechetical centres and in Schools _ the ongoing formation of teachers and catechists The Diocesan Youth Commission was founded on the 16th of January 1983 as the official body of the Church in Malta responsible for the evangelization of young people. The Kummissjoni Djoċesana Żgħażagħ seeks to develop, coordinate and survey pastoral youth ministry in Malta. The aims of this commission are to: listen to young people's needs by regularly commissioning research projects in youth related fields examine and evaluate pastoral youth work on this research basis and through a process of discernment, prepares plans for youth ministry in a strategic and professional manner to be implemented in all sectors of life involving young people: parishes, work, education, leisure/recreation and the social sphere express the voice of youths in the Church and in society advise the Archbishop and other pastoral bodies with regards to the youth sphere be a coordinating platform for all entities related to the youth sphere ensure ongoing formation for youth ministers create and offer resources in relation to work with young people 2

Dr Mark Sultana or his delegate (IFP) Dr Adrian-Mario Gellel Entry Requirements : To be registered as a regular student in the course, apart from satisfying the General Requirements for Admission as specified in the General Regulations*, one must: Language of Instruction : Maltese i. demonstrate level B1 Spoken and Written competence of English (Language levels of the Common European Framework of Reference); ii. submit one referral letter from Parish Priest and/or the respective Provincial Superior,(in the case of members of Consecrated Religious Life) and/or Movement/Association Leader (in the case of members of a Youth Group). *Additional note: in order to satisfy General Regulation 1.1. (a)(i): applicants must be in possession of a Matriculation Certificate or equivalent. Assessment : Written assignment or reflection paper for every module with reference to the participants personal and pastoral reflections. Course Fee : 100 Venue for Lectures : Lecture Halls of Secretariat for Catechesis and Institute of Pastoral Formation, Catholic Institute, Floriana Session Format : The short certificate course will be spread over a maximum of two-years part-time with a total of 112 hrs of taught sessions. 3
