Growing Value Turning inventiveness into innovation Dr Joe Marshall Friday 11 th July 2014
Realising inventiveness into innovation Importance of UK science parks One of most visible manifestations of collaboration Dynamic and continually evolving ecosystems Critical interchanges (both ways) of ideas and people Importance of university-business collaboration The role of the National Centre Examples of understanding, connecting and supporting

Setting the scene National Centre for Universities and Business Established in 2013 with a UK-wide remit Builds on 25 years of work by CIHE Strategic network of business and university leaders Supported by all the publicly funded innovation bodies NCUB aims to strengthen the strategic partnership between universities and business
Summary of Operations Areas of operation Inventiveness into innovation and prosperity Talent, Expertise and Attributes Types of operation Analysis (measure performance) Inspiration (best practice & case studies) Brokerage (IP & internships) Action (Practical projects) Target Audience and Partners SMEs Universities Corporates International & Inward Investment Government & Devolved administrations
Inventiveness into Innovation To illustrate the work of the National Centre Examination of growing value by UNDERSTANDING inventiveness becomes innovation CONNECTING inventiveness to innovation SUPPORTING inventiveness into innovation
Understanding how inventiveness becomes innovation Enhancing Value Task Force How best to grow economic value in the UK by more effective university-business collaboration Led by: David Eyton, BP Shirley Pearce, Loughborough Uni Research: Professor Alan Hughes, Cambridge
Enhancing Value: the issue 26bn spent each year on private & publicly funded R&D. Quality of the intellectual inventiveness in the UK is selfevident. UK cannot afford to become the world s best contract researcher for other countries development. Its inventiveness must be pulled through into innovation within firms to create economic growth and jobs.
Enhancing Value: the conclusions UK needs to compete for a greater share of the innovation supply chain Enhancing the impact of UK higher education and research in this way requires a systems-based approach Commercialisation of research is inherently risky (esp for smaller companies) UK inventions often end up being funded by oversea businesses, and their value is not captured in the UK.
Enhancing Value: summary book Launched next week ebook format (on Amazon, itunes) Hardback copy NCUB Website
Connecting Inventiveness to innovation The Enhancing Task Force identified: Small companies account for only 4% of investment made in the UK Innovative smaller firms often struggle to interact with universities and funding systems Awareness of opportunities remains low Perceptions remain about issue with universities (takes too long; IP ownership issues).
Small business perspective Need to consider requirements of small businesses From our on Brighton Fuse and London Fusion projects we already know: Talent Advice We need to work across the system to open up and maximise opportunities. Money
Intelligent Brokerage tool Provide a single point of entry to find out and access an array of opportunities in universities Harness and utilise the latest in web technologies: aggregate different sets of information together develop intelligent algorithms to match opportunities utilise sophisticated search and translation tools to provide a tool that uses business-friendly language complement and add value to existing brokering approaches (including face-to-face).
Supporting Inventiveness into innovation Local growth with national policy Witty Review importance of universities Universities play critical roles in their locality Increasing interaction with the Local Enterprise Partnerships (LEPs) 39 LEPs across England
Smart Specialisation Advisory Hub Supporting LEPs with advice and evidence : to help guide where to invest smartly to specialise in areas where they can really make a difference The Hub will pull together evidence on what is working, and highlighting key areas where universities, businesses and LEPs should be working together. To be launched in November 2014
Inventiveness into Innovation NCUB is passionate about the benefits, impacts and opportunities from university-business collaboration NCUB works to understand, connect and support collaboration to enable the UK to be the best in the world at university-business collaboration
