4 Things to Consider when Choosing A College Location of College Housing Do you want to live there? Will you commute? Majors, programs and degrees offered Tuition and costs College fit Self-exploration/personal preferences

5 Applying to College Visit to learn more about schools, programs and majors. Utilize Big Future resources Bigfuture.collegeboard.org Naviance has an excellent search engine for college.

6 Applying to a 4-year College Pick 3 to 5 schools. Remember: More is not always better! Visit the school s web site and explore college info on Naviance. Visit schools and attend open houses! Learn!

7 Application Deadlines Pay Close Attention to Application Deadlines. Early Decision: If you are accepted you must attend that school Early Action: You can apply early but can still apply to other schools E.D. and E.A. deadlines are usually Nov. 1 st 15 th Regular Decision: Regular application deadlines Regular deadlines usually December through January Rolling: As your application is received it is reviewed

8 Recommendations Some schools require 2 or more letters of recommendation. Select teachers that know you well and can help show your strengths. Ask your teachers now! It is not too early. Usually takes about 2-3 weeks. Use Brag sheet! Send Request to teacher through Naviance. Teachers will upload letter to Naviance and it will be sent electronically.

9 Applying to a 4-year College Application Fees/Waivers Online Applications/Common App Fake account username: soriano@wboe.org, password: Panthers2016! Essay Tips/Examples in guidance Resume/CV List all your activities, clubs, sports, employment and volunteer hours.

10 SAT, ACT and Grades Take the SAT or ACT if you have not already done so. SAT Oct 3 rd test: Late registration Sept 22 nd. Scores by Oct 22 nd. Nov 7 th test: Register by Oct 9 th. Scores by Nov 24 th. Send scores to schools you apply to ($11.25/school). No fee for scores sent at time of testing (up to 4 schools) ACT Oct 24th test: Register by Sept 18 th. Late registration until Oct 2 nd. Scores posted by Nov 10 th - Dec 28 th. Send scores to schools you apply to ($12/school) No combined scores. Essay optional. Online prep Online prep Keep grades up during senior year. Mid-year reports sent to colleges!

11 Transcripts Once you apply to a school let your counselor know. Fill out a Transcript release form (Guidance office). Your parent/guardian needs to sign the form if you are not 18. The school cannot send your transcript without this form filled out. This needs to be done before Application Due Date. Don t wait until the last minute! Rutgers Deadline November 1 st /December 1 s.t Student self report transcript (SRAR)

12 Applying to a 2-year school/bcc You can apply to Bergen Community College online They do not require recommendations, transcripts, SAT scores, essays or application fee (unless applying to medical program). Visit the BCC web site to see majors and programs they offer. Instant decision day will be in December

13 Financial Aid Visit college web sites for information about financial aid and scholarships. Difference between grants/scholarships, loans, work-study programs. Visit the Free application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) at Families may begin to fill it out January 1 st, Scholarships will be updated on Naviance as we receive them. Pay close attention to deadlines!
