This guide is designed to help customers manage their energy and identify where further energy savings can be made in the future. Energy efficiency is not a topic that will go away. The price of energy will continue to rise and the government will introduce more legislation to drive carbon reduction to meet the Kyoto Target for 00. 4 Metering and Monitoring Schneider Electric offer a standard range of single and three phase MCB distribution boards with integrated metering. For compliance with Part L a split metering offer has been developed to allow separate metering of lighting and power. The installation of submetering allows users to comply with the Part L stipulation that 90% of each fuel used in the building must be accounted for by end use category. Installation of PowerLogic equipment may also qualify for the enhanced capital allowance scheme - see page 7 for details. The Regulations are divided into a number of Parts. The Parts relating to conservation of energy are Part L (Conservation of Fuel and Power) and Part F (Ventilation). Since the previous Regulations were introduced in 00 the UK has signed up to the EU Energy Performance of Buildings Directive, all EU countries must legislate to apply it. New Building Regulations for England and Wales (Parts L and F) came into force on 6 April 006 which comply with the Directive and will achieve a significant reduction of up to 8% in non-dwellings, % in houses and 8% in flats from 00 levels, helping to achieve the UK s target for carbon dioxide reduction. Each part of the Building Regulations is supported by Approved Documents which reproduce the requirements and provide practical and technical guidance on some ways of complying. The new Approved Documents that can be downloaded from the Communities and Local Government website (Planning, building and the environment > Building Regulations > Approved Documents) are: n LA New dwellings (006 edition) n LB Existing dwellings (006 edition) n LA New buildings other than dwellings (006 edition) n LB Existing buildings other than dwellings (006 edition) n F Means of ventilation (006 edition) An existing installation with no metering and restricted space and access. 5 Control Command Products One of the simplest ways of reducing electricity consumption is to use equipment or lighting more wisely. In its simplest form, manually switching equipment off is one way to achieve this, however guesswork and intervention can be taken out of the equation with the implementation of simple control systems. We offer a broad range of Schneider Electric control and command products that facilitate automated switching of loads based upon the individual requirements. The control and command range includes a variety of time switches, presence detectors, light sensitive switches, time delay relays and contactors. Use a simple control command programmable time switch CCT570 and a suitable contactor to control the lighting. A 35% energy saving can be achieved by only operating the lighting when people occupy the building in normal working hours. Power Factor Correction The quantity of electric motors, induction heaters, and fluorescent lighting installed in commercial and industrial buildings has increased significantly, reducing the power factor and the efficiency of the electrical supply. Utilising power factor correction reduces the reactive current drawn from the electrical supply, reduces/removes reactive power charging, reduces CO emissions, reduces kwh consumption and creates greater supply capacity through more efficient energy use. Fix the Basics n Electricity companies are charging for poor power factor n This charge is known as the "reactive power charge" n Power factor should be 0.95 lagging or better n You can save 95kg of CO per kvar of PFC installed per year n You reduce kwh consumption reducing Climate Change Levy payments Newey & Eyre in conjunction with Schneider Electric are able to provide advice and power factor solutions. 6 Variable Speed Drives In a conventional pumping or ventilation installation, the electric motor is directly supplied by the line supply and runs at its rated speed. With an Altivar variable speed drive installed in line with the motor, there is no need for a mechanical damper. The flow variation is achieved directly with Altivar variable speed drives. Testing has proven that where Altivar variable speed drives are applied to centrifugal pumps, fans or rotary compressors, energy savings of up to 50% are regularly achieved, for a speed reduction of only 0%. Designed specifically for the HVAC market, Altivar offers ratings from 0.75 to 75kW and IP0 or IP5 versions to suit typical indoor or outdoor installations. Altivar drives are suited to both new installation and retrofit applications, and are designed with simplicity of installation in mind. BREEAM focuses on reducing CO emissions from building operations considering: n CO emissions n Metering n Energy management n Low energy lights n A rated white goods Display Energy Certification SinceOctober 008, all buildings with a total useful floor area of more than 000m that are occupied by a public authority or an institution providing public services and access should display a Display Energy Certificate (DEC). This certificate publicly displays the energy efficiency of a building using an A-G scale and is calculated by examining the energy consumption of the property as recorded by the electricity and other meters and thus giving an operational rating. A DEC is always accompanied by an Advisory Report that lists cost effective measures to improve the energy rating and efficiency of a building i.e. adding thermostatic controls, improving building energy management, education of staff etc. Energy Performance Certificates An Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) shows an asset rating which is a numerical and colour coded indication of the energy performance of the building based on its standardised use. Energy Performance Certificates include these benchmarks to enable buildings to be compared with one another. Asset ratings are calculated taking into account the energy performance of the building s fabric and its services (i.e. heating, cooling, hot water, ventilation and lighting). 7
