1 Foundation Programme 2014 Recruitment Stats and Facts Final report December 2014 Summary information for FP and AFP 2014 recruitment 1. Applications submitted: A total of 7974 applications were submitted, with 1368 applicants applying to both the Foundation Programme (FP) and the Academic Foundation Programme (AFP) commencing in August 2014 (FP 2014 and AFP 2014 respectively). Table 1: Applicant profile comparison 2013 and Applicants nominated Applications completed 8206 (99.7) 7974 (98.7) UK nominees not completing applications Non-UK nominees not completing applications 7 28 Total number who did not complete applications AFP 2014 recruitment: There were 480 AFP vacancies across the UK AFP applications were submitted by 1368 individuals: 52.6 applied to two academic units of application (AUoA). After completing a national application form with local variations through the Foundation Programme Application System (FPAS), AFP applicants followed local selection processes depending on which AUoA(s) they applied to. There was a single national offers date, followed by three cascade offer dates. FP 2014 vacancies filled: There were 7114 FP vacancies in addition to the AFP vacancies discussed above. 100 of FP vacancies were filled during the national FP allocation on 10 March Oversubscription: FP 2014 was oversubscribed and applicants were placed on either the primary or reserve list depending on the total application score: a. Primary list: 92.2 of the 7,114 applicants on the primary list were to one of their top five foundation schools. The cut off score for the primary list was There were two applicants with this score, but only one place. One person was randomly to the reserve list. Page 1 of 10

2 b. Reserve list: 235 applicants were placed on the reserve list, including 202 current UK students and 33 other applicants. Reserve list applicants will be in batches to vacancies which arise due to withdrawals and failed finals. Batch allocations will take place on 29 May, 26 June and 10 July. 5. Eligibility Office: The UKFPO s Eligibility Office processed 649 applications. Of those, 314 were eligible to apply. Of those, 218 were fully eligible, 14 were eligible subject to providing evidence of their right to work in the UK and 82 are eligible subject to passing PLAB by summer of Of the total who applied to the Eligibility Office 277 (42.7) were/are students of non-eea medical schools, 341 (52.5) were/are students of EEA medical schools and 31 (4.8) were students of UK medical schools who graduated prior to 5 August Eligible applicants who need work permits: Prior to the FP allocation on 10 March 2014 there were six eligible applicants who had not provided evidence of their right to work in the UK. As the Foundation Programme was once again oversubscribed these applications were not considered and the applicants were withdrawn from the national process. 7. Clinical skills assessments: 70 Eligibility Office applicants graduated more than two years before the start of FP/AFP 2014 and were required to take the clinical assessment: 43 (61.4) passed and 27 (38.6) failed the assessment. The cost was 850 per assessment paid by each applicant direct to the clinical assessment provider. The clinical assessment was delivered by the University Hospital of South Manchester. 8. Failure to meet the person specification: 33 applicants, 18 from UK medical schools and 15 from non-uk medical schools, were identified as having an exceptionally low SJT score, i.e. 4 or more standard deviations from the mean. In accordance with the process for handling exceptionally low SJT scores, the affected applicants were withdrawn from the process prior to the FP allocation for failing to meet the national person specification and invited to attend a face to face review of their SJT outcome on 31 March Twenty applicants choose to attend the face to face review, 1 applicant was successful. For UK students, the heads of schools and pastoral care contacts at the applicants medical schools were informed prior to the applicants being notified. 9. Special circumstances: 189 applicants were approved for pre-allocation to a particular foundation school based on special circumstances. Of these, 176 applicants are on the primary list, 8 are on the reserve list and 5 have withdrawn. 5 Local AFP and FP applications Just over 60 of UK students who applied for an academic programme applied to the AUoA most local to their medical school for one of their AFP applications. If we exclude those applicants who accepted an AFP offer, a little under 45 of UK students selected the foundation school associated with their medical school as first erence for their FP application. The table below shows the percentage of applicants from each UK medical school who applied to the most local AUoA if they applied for an AFP and the percentage who selected the foundation school associated with their medical school as first erence for their FP applications. Those applicants who accepted an AFP offer are excluded from the percentage for FP applications. 6 Reserve list applicants Detailed information for FP 2014 recruitment There were no reserve list applicants from Oxford or Warwick medical schools. Of the 235 applicants on the reserve list following the national FP allocation on 10 March 2014, 202 were from the remaining UK medical schools and 33 from non-uk medical schools. FP 2014 application results by medical school The table below shows the number of final year medical students from each UK medical school who submitted an FP application (excluding those who had accepted an AFP offer or been withdrawn prior to the national allocation date); the number on the primary list; how many were to one of their top five erences; how many got a lower choice than fifth; the percentage who were to their first erence and the percentage to one of their top five erences. The lowest score is shown for both applicants excluding those pre- on the grounds of special circumstances, and for applicants pre- to the foundation school.
