Introducing Gospel Leadership Development Gospel Leadership Development is an in-service development program for today s gospel workers in Adelaide, South Australia, and beyond. Bible College SA exists to equip gospel workers for the harvest at both their initial stages of training and when they are seeking advanced in-service vocational development. Whether we have been engaged in vocational mission and ministry for two years or three decades, it is vital that we dedicate time each year to gather with other vocational gospel workers as we continue developing our ministry skills in community, so that as iron sharpens iron, one sharpens another. BCSA s in-service development program offers study at a postgraduate level where - through fellowship, worship, and scholarship - we explore how what we learn from God s word engages our ministry and mission contexts. Our goal is to see today s gospel workers being refined, sharpened, inspired and on top of their game for effective gospel work in their context. There are three strands within the Gospel Leadership Development Pathway. Please click on any of the strand options below for more information: Strand One: Strand Two: In-Service Development for Today s Gospel Workers City-to-City Incubator Program Strand Three: Study Towards Baptist Accreditation There is flexibility between strands, so units can also be drawn from each of them to compile a tailored a program of study. Strand One: In-Service Development for Today s Gospel Workers The purpose of the in-service development pathway is to equip today s gospel workers with advanced biblical and ministry skills in community with fellow, like-minded, gospel workers. It is a pathway delivered in intensives and can be taken for audit or for credit towards a postgraduate award. Each intensive is undertaken in a five-day block and includes gathering in worship, eating together, and learning under the guidance of an internationally renowned expert and practitioner. For 2016, we have two units being offered: 1. Understanding and Engaging our Western Cultural Context with Dr Michael Goheen (August 1 st August 5 th ). Click here for more information. 1
2. Advanced Expository Preaching with Dr Jeff Pugh (January 18 th 22 nd ). Click here for more information. Anyone participating in the in-service development pathway can also undertake units within the City-to-City Incubator program. For 2016, the two units being offered are: 1. Discipleship Formation through Communicating Grace and Truth (PC736) Click here for more information. 2. Executing Visionary Leadership (PC737). Click here for more information. If you wish to pursue in-service development for credit, then you may wish to consider the following nested award structure. The nested award structure allows you to gradually progress through a program of study with three exit points: Exit with 2 subjects for a Graduate Certificate of Ministry or Theology Exit with 4 subjects for a Graduate Diploma of Ministry or Theology Exit with 8 subjects for a Master of Arts (Ministry or Theology) Please note that each exit level is cumulative. For example, if you undertake two subjects, then you can do another two and exit with a Graduate Diploma. A further four subjects would then allow you to exit with a Master of Arts (Ministry/Theology). The entry requirement into the in-service development pathway is an ACT Bachelor of Ministry or Theology, or a Master of Divinity. Please note that the only requirement is the completion of the above awards; there are no GPA requirements. However, for international students, English Language Proficiency also needs to be demonstrated with an IELTS requirement of a 7.0 minimum in reading and writing, as well as a 6.5 in listening and speaking. Featured Unit for 2016: Understanding and Engaging our Western Cultural Context with Dr Michael Goheen Five day intensive: August 1 st August 5 th 2016 Purpose: to equip participants with the understanding of how our western cultural context has developed with the goal of equipping gospel workers to engage our western cultural context with the gospel. To be able to effectively engage our western cultural context with the gospel, we need to understand the factors that have shaped our western cultural context today. There will be two parts to the intensive. The first part will be focusing on understanding the development of our western cultural context and the second will be then tackling the issue of how we engage our western cultural context with the gospel. 2
All our units aim to integrate the skills gospel workers are being given within the intensives with their ministry contexts. This integration will be a key part of discussions during the intensive and the purpose of all assessment tasks. Introducing Dr Michael Goheen Mike is Director of Theological Education and Scholar-in-Residence at the Missional Training Center, Phoenix where he is involved in theological education through teaching, curriculum development, and writing. He is also a professor of missiology at Calvin Theological Seminary (Grand Rapids). Prior to this, Mike was professor of worldview and religion studies at Trinity Western University (Canada) and a teaching fellow in mission and world Christianity at Regent College (Vancouver). Mike is married to Marnie and has four married children and eight grandchildren. He enjoys taking an active role in the lives of his grandchildren. Beyond spending time with his family, which is his favourite thing to do, Mike enjoys his daily exercise routine, watching sport, and hiking. Mike s publications include Introducing Christian Mission Today (2014), Christian Philosophy (2013), A Light to the World: The Missional Church and the Biblical Story (2011), Living at the Crossroads: Introduction to Christian Worldview (2008), and The Drama of Scripture: Finding Our Place in the Biblical Story (2004). If you wish to register your interest in the in-service development pathway, in a subject, or simply wish to ask questions, please do not hesitate to katy.smith@biblecollege.sa.edu.au. Strand Two: The City-to-City Incubator Program Partnering with City-to-City Australia, Bible College SA delivers the City-to-City Incubator program, which aims to equip local leaders to start and build churches in Adelaide. The City-to-City Incubator program originated at Redeemer Presbyterian Church in New York City under the leadership of Tim Keller. It originally ran as a six week, invitation-only intensive in New York. However, Redeemer is passionate about seeing leaders from around the world plant churches in their own urban contexts and is therefore now establishing the Incubator program across a number of countries. In 2015, not only will BCSA begin to offer the Incubator, but we will also be one of the first institutions in the world to offer the program as an option within an accredited tertiary theological award. The full Incubator program covers four broad areas: 1. Living inter-connectedly with a gospel dynamic (Personal-Interpersonal domain) 2. Communicating grace and truth in a way that forms and engages disciples (Prophetic domain) 3
3. Creating a missional culture (Priestly domain) 4. Executing a visionary leadership (Kingly domain) At BCSA, the four areas make up four units of study that can be taken for audit or credit. If taken for credit, then the four units make up a Graduate Diploma of Ministry. BCSA offers all four units of the Incubator Program over a two-year cycle. In 2016, we will offer the third and fourth units of the two-year cycle. The delivery of each unit will be via four one-day workshop sessions led by Andrew Katay (CEO of City-to-City Australia). Each unit will involve peerto-peer coaching, personal spiritual formation, application of ideas to real-world problems, and hands-on training that combines theology, church planting theory and insights from adult learning theory. There are two criteria for entry into the program. The first is that the participant must hold at least a BTh/BMin or an MDiv. The second is that the participant must be leading a church or an urban church plant, or be actively preparing to do so. The program outline for 2016 is: 1. Discipleship Formation through Communicating Grace and Truth (PC736) Module 1: Proclaiming Christ from All of Scripture Module 2: Applying Christ to the Heart by Grace Module 3: Dealing with Conflict in the Grace of Christ Module 4: The Grace Dynamics of Corporate Renewal Four days intensive: March 10 th, April 7 th, May 12 th, June 16 th Executing Visionary Leadership (PC737) Module 1: Spiritual Formation as a Leadership Task Module 2: Leadership Through Others Module 3: Leading a Church Through Growth Transitions Module 4: Leadership through Organisation Four days intensive: July 21 st, August 18 th, September 22 nd, October 27 th 2016 If you wish to register your interest or ask questions about the program, please katy.smith@biblecollege.sa.edu.au. Strand Three: Study Towards Baptist Accreditation 4
Bible College SA has the privilege of offering two coursework subjects for gospel workers pursuing accreditation with Baptist Churches SA. The first subject is advanced skills in preaching, which is offered every even year (2014, 2016, 2018). The second is church systems and congregational health, which is offered every odd year (2015, 2017, 2019). Both audit and credit options are available. However, completing both subjects for credit will enable candidates to exit with a Graduate Certificate of Ministry. To register your interest in Advanced Expository Preaching in 2016, please katy.smith@biblecollege.sa.edu.au. Unit for 2016: Advanced Expository Preaching Skills with Dr Jeff Pugh Five day intensive: January 18 th 22 nd Purpose: to sharpen the skills of seasoned preachers in biblical expository preaching so that participants can: Prepare and preach expository sermons that show a greater capacity to be creative, imaginative, and persuasive. Explore what style of preaching fits their skills and abilities. Use different styles of preaching in line with different biblical genres. Introducing Dr Jeff Pugh Formerly Dean of Postgraduate Studies at Melbourne School of Theology, Jeff is a committed trained of preachers who is passionate about helping seasoned gospel workers sharpen their preaching skills to the next level. Richard Trist, a former student of Jeff Pugh s and now Dean of the Anglican Institute at Ridley Melbourne, commends the unit saying, A great course that will stretch the preacher to try new approaches. Preaching will be enriched and congregations will be appreciative! 5
