Rationale a) Purpose and need: As noted in a recent article in BizEd, a publication of AACSB International the Association to Advance College Schools of Business, globalization places new demands on businesses and business people: Few places in this world are untouched by escalating global economic interdependence.... [G]lobal competence is a core competence; knowing how to confidently and competently work across cultures is essential in a global economy. 1 International business issues are addressed in a variety of courses in the current business curricula at Eastern Illinois University. Fundamental principles and concepts underlying global business issues, however, are not covered systematically. This course will provide the opportunity for students to learn these principles and to integrate and apply knowledge from general education courses to business. Additionally, a foundation course in international business will allow for more in-depth coverage of international issues in upper division business courses. Assessment data further support the need for additional emphasis on international business. Exam 1 McCann, J.E., The Next Economy, BizEd, March-April 2006, p
6 subscores on international issues for the ETS Major Field Test in Business (administered to senior business students since Fall 2004) have been lower than desired. Further, faculty teaching the business core curriculum capstone course have reported that students do not have sufficient background in international issues. b) Justification of the level of the course and of course prerequisites. This course will build on knowledge developed in the prerequisite courses (BUS 2750, ECN 2801G and ECN 2802G). Moreover, if the course is offered at the junior level, most students will have completed their general education courses including courses particularly in the Social and Behavioral Sciences segment that will provide background on some of the topics covered in this course. c) Similarity to existing courses: (1) Give a clear justification for the new course if it is similar to an existing course. If the contents substantially duplicate those of an existing course, the new proposal should be discussed with the appropriate chairpersons, deans, or curriculum committees and their responses noted in the proposal. This course does not substantially duplicate the contents of an existing course. Some of the topics covered in this course are covered (generally in more depth) in courses in a variety of disciplines including, e.g., ECN 3860 International Economics, GEG 1100G Cultural Geography, PLS 1003 Introduction to Comparative Politics, PLS 3223 International Organizations, PLS 3373 International Political Economy, and SOC 2710G Introductory Sociology. No courses in the university, however, cover these topics in one course or relate these topics directly to business. (2) Cite course(s) to be deleted if the new course is approved or the exceptional need to be met or the obvious gap to be filled. No courses will be deleted. As discussed in 4a), exposure to international business is critical for all business students and the current curriculum does not adequately address this need. d) Impact on Program(s): (3) This course will be part of the business core curriculum and must be completed by all business majors.
