2 1. Explain briefly and clearly the proposed improvement. This proposal is to add a concentration in Healthcare in the MBA program. The suggested program code for this concentration is MBHM. 2. Rationale. Give your reason(s) for the proposed improvement. (If your proposal includes prerequisites, justify those, too.) The MBA program has reviewed its curriculum in conjunction with other colleges and departments at WMU. With the addition of WMED, and the growth of Health Care in SW Michigan there is a clear need for an additional MBA concentration. The MBA program currently offers five concentrations; Computer Information Systems, International Business, Finance, Management and Marketing. A recent survey of WMU MBA alumni reported that nearly 34% of the respondents would have done a healthcare concentration if available. A survey of MBA students in the capstone course in Grand Rapids indicated that around 43% of respondents would consider a healthcare concentration if it was available. Prospective MBA students have also specifically selected a competing west Michigan MBA program (GVSU) rather than WMU because that program offers a healthcare concentration. Demand for business savvy healthcare professionals There is an emerging demand for health care leaders with strong business acumen. Thomas Dolan, president and CEO of the American College of Healthcare Executives notes in Healthcare Business News: Leaders will need to prepare for the oncoming demands of reform...executives will need to strengthen or develop a number of skills to meet these future challenges. Today s health care leaders need to succeed in today s rapidly changing business climate, manage regulatory and business challenges, and positively impact their organization s bottom line. Gene Kaminski, Vice President, Human Resources at Northern Michigan Hospital notes: Heathcare now supports 20 percent of GNP. It would be wise to include focus in MBA programming. Further, Industries and occupations related to health care, personal care and social assistance, and construction are projected to have the fastest job growth between 2010 and Total employment is projected to grow by 14.3 percent over the decade, resulting in 20.5 million new jobs. In occupations in which a master s degree is typically needed for entry, employment is expected to grow by 21.7 percent, faster than the growth rate for any other education category. Thus a need exists for qualified people with Masters level expertise in health care. The proposed health care concentration will help prepare WMU students for careers in healthcare leadership (see attached ). Benefit to WMU students The health care concentration will provide WMU students with learning opportunities from within WMU s well-established MPA, HIIM, and Nursing programs. The expertise gained by program participants will make the students attractive hires for leadership positions within health care firms. This concentration will also allow us to create a joint MD/MBA program with the Western School of Medicine. Benefit to WMU The University will benefit from the prestige of having this new concentration. This high profile concentration will generate positive publicity and will attract and retain top students. Employers who hire health care professionals will have greater interest in hiring WMU s MBA graduates. 3. Effect on other colleges, departments or programs. If consultation with others is required, attach evidence of consultation and support. If objections have been raised, document the resolution. Demonstrate that the program you propose is not a duplication of an existing one. Consultation has taken place between Haworth College of Business, the Medical School, Nursing program, Master of Public Administration, and HIIM administration and faculty. Letters of support have been received the Med School, Nursing, MPA, and HIIM. 4. Effect on your department s programs. Show how the proposed change fits with other departmental offerings. The proposed MBA healthcare concentration integrates well with other departmental offerings. It allows students to further their understanding of healthcare issues through selection of three classes specific to that area of interest. HCoB 0912
3 These additions will strengthen the MBA program, keeping it current/relevant with the healthcare expansion that is taking place in SW Michigan (and beyond) and ensuring that the needs of current and prospective students are being met. 5. Effects on enrolled students: Are program conflicts avoided? Will your proposal make it easier or harder for students to meet graduation requirements? Can students complete the program in a reasonable time? Show that you have considered scheduling needs and demands on students time. If a required course will be offered during summer only, provide a rationale. The proposed changes will expand elective options for new and current students 6. Student or external market demand. What is your anticipated student audience? What evidence of student or market demand or need exists? What is the estimated enrollment? What other factors make your proposal beneficial to students? A recent survey of WMU MBA alumni reported that nearly 34% of the respondents would have done a healthcare concentration if available. A survey of current students at the Grand Rapids locations shows that 43% of respondents would consider a Health Care concentration if it was available. Prospective MBA students have also specifically selected a competing west Michigan MBA program (GVSU) rather than WMU because that program offers a health care concentration. The anticipated student audience for the Health Care Concentration includes WMED students, employees at healthcare organizations in SW and MW Michigan, and MBA students working within health care now, or planning to switch to that industry in the future. A recent (2012) Michigan Health and Hospital Association report shows the economic impact of Health care in Michigan (by county): (select newsroom, then reports and publication). In Kalamazoo County, the total value added by the health care sector is: $2,248,143,050 and 32,126 total jobs were created by the health care sector in Kalamazoo County. 7. Effects on resources. Explain how your proposal would affect department and University resources, including faculty, equipment, space, technology, and library holdings. Tell how you will staff additions to the program. If more advising will be needed, how will you provide for it? How often will course(s) be offered? What will be the initial one-time costs and the ongoing base-funding costs for the proposed program? (Attach additional pages, as necessary.) Existing course offerings will be utilized for the concentration; therefore, the impact will be neutral with regard to department and university resources. 8. General education criteria. For a general education course, indicate how this course will meet the criteria for the area or proficiency. (See the General Education Policy for descriptions of each area and proficiency and the criteria. Attach additional pages as necessary. Attach a syllabus if (a) proposing a new course, (b) requesting certification for baccalaureate-level writing, or (c) requesting reapproval of an existing course.) NA 9. List the learning outcomes for the proposed course or the revised or proposed major, minor, or concentration. These are the outcomes that the department will use for future assessments of the course or program. Existing course offerings will be utilized for the concentration; therefore, current learning outcomes for those courses will be adhered to. In addition, the MBA Learning Goals and Objectives will be utilized: Global and Intercultural Competence: develop global business skills - Analyze implications of salient environmental differences for conducting global business - Analyze cultural implications of conducting business globally Professional Communication: be effective communicators - Develop well-researched professional documents - Deliver professional oral presentations Critical & Creative Thinking, Analysis & Problem Solving: be effective decision makers - Select options based on critical analyses - Illustrate the role of information technology in supporting business - Integrate functional business knowledge Civic & Social Responsibility, Ethical Reasoning & Action: be socially responsible - Propose sustainability efforts to be undertaken by an organization - Devise viable solutions to address ethical conflicts - Analyze legal implications of business decisions HCoB 0912
4 Leadership and Teamwork: have effective leadership skills - Formulate viable approaches for leading others given their individual leadership styles - Effectively interact in teams; build, direct and facilitate groups in order to utilize members talents to meet attainable goals. 10. Describe how this curriculum change is a response to assessment outcomes that are part of a departmental or college assessment plan or informal assessment activities. This change is in response to the following objective of our recently implemented HCoB strategic plan objective 2.4: Develop interdisciplinary MBA programs. Aviation and healthcare were identified as potential MBA concentrations in the strategic plan. 11. (Undergraduate proposals only) Describe, in detail, how this curriculum change affects transfer articulation for Michigan community colleges. For course changes, include detail on necessary changes to transfer articulation from Michigan community college courses. For new majors or minors, describe transfer guidelines to be developed with Michigan community colleges. For revisions to majors or minors, describe necessary revisions to Michigan community college guidelines. Department chairs should seek assistance from college advising directors or from the admissions office in completing this section. NA References 2012 Economic Impact of Health Care in Michigan.
