2 Proposal for a New Certificate I. Proposed title of new certificate. Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Advanced Study in History II. Academic year of intended implementation III. Name of the department and college submitting the proposal. A. Identify the unit which will have primary responsibility for the certificate History Department, College of Humanities and Fine Arts B. Identify the level of the certificate. Post-baccalaureate IV. Statements on questions of need and demand. A. Relation of the program to the University Strategic Plan. The certificate serves the University s Mission (as stated in the University Strategic Plan) as a comprehensive university principally serving Northern California. It is intended for K-12 teachers or post-baccalaureate students who may not have the time or resources to obtain a Master s Degree in History but who want to deepen their knowledge of history, sharpen their research and writing skills, and expand their use of primary sources. B. Rationale for seeking a certificate rather than another type of program. The certificate provides a way for individuals to take graduate-level classes without the formal requirements of an M.A. program. It also allows students to test the waters before applying to the M.A. program. C. Need for the proposed certificate. 1. Identify other CSU campuses with the proposed certificate. None 2. Identify neighboring institutions with the proposed certificate. None 3. Identify differences, if any, between these programs and the proposed program. N/A D. Identify other closely related curricula currently offered by the campus. The only closely related curriculum is the History graduate program. 1. Explain the impact the proposed certificate will have on these programs. The certificate would enhance the History graduate program by (1) increasing enrollment in History graduate courses and (2) allowing students to try out the program before actually applying. 2. Explain how current programs do not meet the proposed certificate's objectives. N/A E. Student demand for the program. 1. Give evidence of serious student interest in the proposed certificate. A survey of school teachers done through the North State History-Social Science Project in 2008 asked individuals about their level of interest in taking graduate 2

3 History courses at CSU, Chico without official matriculation into the M.A. program. Results were: a. Very interested: 54.8% b. Perhaps: 38.7% c. Not likely: 6.5% 2. Estimated number of students seeking the certificate a. in the year of initiation: 2-3 b. after three years: 3-5 c. after five years: 4-5 d. Describe methodology for developing these estimates: Estimate based on survey data. 3. Estimate the number of certificates awarded a. in the year of initiation: 0 b. after three years:1-2 c. after five years: 2-3 d. Describe methodology for developing these estimates: Estimate based on number of students anticipated and probability that a typical student will take 3 units per semester. F. Identify professional uses for the proposed certificate. Some school districts provide financial incentives for teachers to take graduate courses. V. Resources A. Curriculum Note: Proposed curriculum should take advantage of courses already offered in other departments when subject matter would otherwise overlap or duplicate existing course content. A. An acceptable baccalaureate in History from an accredited institution or an acceptable baccalaureate in another discipline with advance approval of the Graduate Coordinator. 2. Satisfactory grade point average, as specified in Admission to Master s Degree Program in University Catalog. 3. Approval by the History Department and the Graduate School. C. Explanation of any special program characteristics (e.g., terminology, credit units required, types of coursework, etc.). N/A D. List all new courses for the proposed program. None E. 5 H. Complete catalog copy, including admission and completion requirements. See the current University Catalog for correct format; please follow it exactly. Before the proposal is submitted to Academic Affairs (for undergraduate certificates) or to GIIS (for post-baccalaureate certificates), it may be helpful to review catalog copy with the Director of Academic Publications, Facilities, and Database Operations. The Certificate in Advanced Study in History The Department of History offers a post-baccalaureate Certificate in Advanced Study in History. Admission: There are no course prerequisites for admission to this certificate program and the GRE is not required. Applicants for admission must, however, meet all relevant University and departmental standards, policies, and procedures, including: 1. A bachelor s degree in History from an accredited institution or an acceptable bachelor s degree in another discipline with advance approval of the History Department s Graduate Coordinator. 2. An acceptable undergraduate grade point average, as specified in Admission to Master s Degree Program in the University Catalog. 3. An application on file with the School of Graduate, International, and Interdisciplinary Studies. 4. Approval by the History Department Graduate Committee. Course Requirements for the Certificate: 12 units The certificate requires 12 units of 400/500/600-level course work in the discipline of history as follows: 1. A minimum of 9 units of 600-level courses selected from: HIST 600 Graduate Research Seminar in History 3.0 FA HIST 610 Graduate Seminar in Classical History 3.0 Inq HIST 620 Graduate Seminar in European History 3.0 SP HIST 630 Graduate Seminar in US History, pre FA HIST 640 Graduate Seminar in US History, post SP HIST 660 Graduate Seminar in Middle Eastern History 3.0 Inq HIST 670 Graduate Seminar in African History 3.0 Inq HIST 675 Graduate Seminar in Asian History 3.0 Inq HIST 680 Graduate Seminar in Latin America 3.0 Inq HIST 690 Historiography 3.0 OddFA HIST 692 Teaching History in College 3.0 EvnFA 2. No more than 3 units of 400- or 500-level courses; these units must include additional student work, as determined by the course instructor, to qualify as graduate-level work. 3. No more than 3 semester units of transfer and/or extension credit. 4. A grade-point average of 3.0 is required for the entire program, with at least a B- earned in each course. 5. All 12 units earned as part of the Certificate may be transferred into the History Department s Master s Degree program. 5
