7 The Outing It was an autumnal afternoon in the inner city. The sun shone brightly down the narrow streets. From inside it looked as though it was much earlier in the year. Buses chugged purposefully along the main road, children laughed joyfully and a dog barked impatiently, waiting for its owner to come out of the shop. Joyce looked out of her window. She knew she should motivate herself to go out there and walk slowly into town. It was a perfect day for it: no rain, bright sunshine. She sighed quietly to herself and then turned and went into the hall. She reached out to get her old, green coat. Bert s coat was still there on the peg. She knew she should sort through his things but she couldn t bring herself to do it yet. Her fingers brushed his coat lightly and she smiled to herself. She pulled on her own coat and opened the door gently. Stepping out into the sunshine she felt as though she was taking a step forward.
