4 $5,000 Branstad Reynolds Agriculture Scholarship Josh Earll Sibley, IA Parents: Mike & Mary Earll Josh was the Iowa FFA President in He has continued his busy activity schedule at Iowa State serving as President of the Agricultural Communications of Tomorrow Club, Vice President of the Student Federation for Agriculture as well as a Student Advisory Team Member for the Agricultural Entrepreneurship Initiative. This past year he was elected as Government of the Student Body Chief of Staff and Government of the Student Body College of Agriculture and Life Sciences Senator. Upon graduation with a major in Ag Education Josh plans to relocate to Northwest Iowa and own an Agricultural Auctioneering Realty and Appraisal Company as well as operating his family century farm. He states, My career goal is to increase awareness about agriculture and provide tools to farmers to allow them to succeed. $5,000 Branstad Reynolds Agriculture Scholarship Melissa Garcia Rodriguez Des Moines, IA Parents: Jose Garcia & Concepción Rodriguez Growing up in an urban setting and attending East High School, Melissa s first introduction to agriculture was taking an animal science course. This ignited the spark to work toward becoming a large animal veterinarian instead of a small animal veterinarian after majoring in Animal Science at Iowa State. She joined the Des Moines FFA Chapter and has shown cattle and sheep; raised chickens, rabbits and became the manager of the FFA school barn where students can house animals for SAE projects. She has attended the Ag Discovery Summer Camp, served as a State Fair Usher and earned the FFA Iowa Degree. Melissa was elected to a District FFA Office breaking boundaries as the first Latino elected above the Chapter level in the Iowa FFA. She declares, My FFA experiences give me confidence I need in myself to know that I can make a difference in lives of others. $10,000 Iowa Select Farms Swine Scholarship Drew Mogler Alvord, IA Parents: Dwight & Donna Mogler Drew will be a senior at Iowa State this fall majoring in Agricultural Business. He has served on the executive team of the Agriculture Marketing and Management Organization, the College of Ag and Life Sciences Student Council, the Iowa Bacon Expo and the Big Event. Growing up on a family farm that has 900 sows and finishes approximately 70,000 market pigs a year, Drew s major interest has been large scale pork production. He completed an internship with the Pipestone Systems and the Iowa Pork Producers Association as legislative intern in Washington D.C. Awarded a Gold Award at the National FFA Public Speaking Contest, he spoke on the opportunity my generation has to feed a population of 9 billion people by 2050 through innovation and adoption of technology. He has a desire to return to the family farm and to advocate the swine industry s story. $6,250 Bruce Rastetter Agricultural Entrepreneurial Scholarship Jenna Lansing Worthington, IA Parents: David & Becky Lansing Jenna has been actively involved in the ISU Agricultural Entrepreneurial program as a member of a team to research the business feasibility for ISU Farms to build a feed mill, a finalist in the business plan competition, taking part in win innovation challenges and participating in the AEI roundtables. She has also served as Treasurer of the Block and Bridle Club, Alumni Relations Chair of Sigma Alpha and participated in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences Ambassador Program. Growing up on a cattle feedlot operation, Jenna developed a love for the beef industry. She states, Because the beef industry is facing serious issues involving the environment, production, producer and consumer concerns; young professionals like me have the opportunity to provide solutions. A senior in Ag business with an Animal Science minor, Jenna relishes the challenge, passion and opportunity to become an entrepreneur in the beef industry. 8

5 $6,250 Bruce Rastetter Animal Science Scholarship Morgan Pittz Mineral Point, WI Parents: Troy & Teresa Pittz Morgan will be a senior in Animal Science this fall. Her numerous Animal Science activities include the ISU Livestock Judging Team, ISU Meat Animal Evaluation Team, Block and Bridle Vice President, President and Vice President of the Student Federation for Agriculture and serving on the Animal Science Student Advisory Board. Morgan began exhibiting pigs when she was 9 years old. She became involved with the National Junior Swine Association, as a leader for her county s 4-H/FFA swine program and interned at Murphy Brown LLC as well as Maschhoffs. She expressed, I feel that the choices I have made to get involved in 4-H/FFA and Iowa State activities will help me be successful in the future because I not only have many amazing opportunities and gained numerous skills; but I have gotten to give back and teach others about the industry. $6,250 Bruce Rastetter Biorenewable Resources Scholarship Breanna Branderhorst Prairie City, IA Parents: Bryan & Deb Branderhorst Breanna interned for CenUSA in a grant program to complete materials and develop a curriculum about biorenewable resources to be used in middle and high school agriculture and science classrooms. A senior in Ag Education she plans to teach high school agriculture. She has been President of three clubs including the Block and Bridle Meats Interest Group, chair of numerous events and a member of the 2014 ISU Meats Judging Team. She now is serving as an assistant coach of the Meats Team. Breanna has been an integral part of her family s show pig business and co-owns 50 sows. She has served as the Iowa Pork Queen. Breanna has studied abroad in Denmark and Sweden. She indicated, Activities such as the Iowa Pork Queen taught me about communicating with people of different backgrounds and to be tolerant and understanding of other viewpoints. $6,000 Iowa Select Farms Swine Scholarship Matthew Kerns Clearfield, IA Parents: Steven & Becky Kerns Matthew s life has evolved around the pork industry; from doing chores on the family 500 sow seed stock operation, to showing pigs as a 4-Her, to serving as the Iowa Premier Pork Youth Ambassador. He will be a senior at Iowa State this fall majoring in Animal Science. He has served as CALS Student Council President, ISU Bacon Expo Sponsorship & Education Co-Chair, VEISHEA Executive Board Catering Co-Chair, Alpha Gamma Rho Fraternity VP of Alumni Relations, Animal Science Undergraduate Advisory Board, Government of the Student Body Senator and University Affairs Committee and as CALS Student Ambassador. He states, Upon graduation, I hope to start my own premier quality pork and beef company. It is my wish to expand this into a franchise type company and allow producers a low risk, near independent production opportunity. $6,000 Iowa Select Farms Swine Scholarship Macy Marek Riverside, IA Parents: Tim & Heather Marek Macy will be an incoming freshman at Iowa State majoring in Agricultural Business and Agriculture Education. She started showing pigs at age 5 and has very successfully competed at the local, state and national levels. Macy was selected to participate in the 2014 Showpig.com All Star Camp in Romney, West Virginia. At this camp community service projects included building a quarantine barn for the school s FFA swine operation as well as starting a garden project. One of her biggest accomplishments has been in livestock judging where she was a part of the State Champion Livestock Judging Teams in both 4-H and FFA. Macy was the winning individual in FFA and placed 3 rd and 5 th in 4-H. She expressed, Without my involvement in agriculture through 4-H and FFA I do not know what life would be like. Through these experiences I have made lifelong friendships and gained valuable skills. 9

6 $5,000 Mark Pearson Entrepreneurship Scholarship Justin Bahr Iowa Falls, IA Parents: Scott & Teresa Bahr Justin will be a senior at Iowa State this fall in Agricultural Business and International Ag. He was a member of the Iowa State Agricultural Entrepreneurship Initiative Student Advisory Team. A participant in the World Food Prize Youth Institute, he chose Tanzania Africa for his research paper. A year later he had the opportunity to study abroad in Tanzania through Iowa State. He has also studied abroad in Panama and Brazil. In addition Justin has had internships with Archer Daniels Midland Company and Rembrandt Foods. At Iowa State he was a Director of Government Relations, on the Ambassador Team and Secretary of the Agriculture Marketing and Management Organization. He states, FFA is a great program which helped bring me out of my shell through leadership involvement. $5,000 Mark Pearson Memorial Scholarship by Cattlemen s Beef Quarters Melissa Kroksh Akron, IA Parents: Randy & Debbie Kroksh An Ag Communication major at Iowa State, Melissa has used livestock photography and art to help promote her interest in swine and beef production. She has volunteered to be the photographer at many events such as the Bacon Expo, Block and Bridle Swine Sale and Crops Judging Contest. Melissa has served as Treasurer of the Agriculture Communication of Tomorrow Club, Coordinator of the 11 th Agriculture Weekend Experience, a communication assistant at ISU Farm Energy and a team leader at the annual Beef Extravaganza. This summer she was a marketing intern for Iowa Select Farms. She looks forward to working in the beef and swine industries, particularly drawing charcoal pictures and creating sale fliers for show stock families as she continues to focus on agriculture communication in the future. $5,000 Sinclair Tractor Agronomy Scholarship Alexandria Ferguson New Sharon, IA Parents: Brett & Carrie Ferguson Alexandria s family s agriculture roots and 4-H and FFA experiences are what shaped her decision to major in Agronomy. Internships have supplemented her classroom studies with practical experience. She worked for Monsanto as a National Field Sales Intern. This past summer she was a US Corn Marketing Intern at Pioneer Headquarters in Johnston. At Iowa State she has been a member of the Agriculture Entrepreneurship Initiative Student Advisory Team, and held offices and actively participated in Sigma Alpha, Alpha Zeta, Iowa Corn Growers, CALS Ambassadors and Block and Bridle. She feels one of her greatest accomplishments was to study abroad in Costa Rica. Her motto for the future comes from a quote of Henry A Wallace, I ve always believed that if you can envision something hasn t been, that can be, and bring it into being, that is tremendous worthwhile thing to do. $5,000 Sinclair Tractor Agronomy Scholarship Mitchell Hora Ainsworth, IA Parents: Brian & Theresa Hora Mitchell gained firsthand experience with the basics of precision farming from working on his home farm. This led to the decision to major in Agriculture Systems Technology and Agronomy at Iowa State. He has been involved in the College of Agriculture and Life Science Ambassadors as Chairman of the Alumni Relations Committee, represents Alpha Zeta on the CALS Student Council, served as Recruitment Chairman for the American Society of Safety Engineers and Special Events Chairman for Freshman Council. While President of his FFA Chapter and Chairman FFA Land Lab Committee, it grew substantially to 125 acres. He has been very active in Alpha Gamma Rho Fraternity. This past summer he had a working internship in Minnesota involving crops, soil, livestock and manure management as well as design and engineering. This has built more resources for his planned future Ag Consulting Business. He states, Recent numbers show world population over 9.5 billion by I desire to be a leader in agricultural technologies to better the world wide situation. 10

7 $3,000 Alliant Energy Interstate Power & Light Scholarship Kaylin Burr Lone Tree, IA Parents: Richard & Sheila Burr An incoming freshman at Iowa State majoring in Agriculture and Society, her long term goal is to connect consumers with hardworking, passionate farmers who provide the world with food, fiber and fuel. At National and State FFA Conventions and the Iowa 4-H Conference she attended sessions that talked about how to communicate with others about agriculture and become an agvocate. In 4-H and FFA she has showed cattle and meat goats. Kaylin has served on the Johnson County Youth Council, President of FCCLA and Vice President of her FFA Chapter. She has also been active in several community fund raising projects including Cash for Cattle and Green Out Game that raises awareness for organ donation. Kaylin declares, 4-H, FFA and high school activities have greatly influenced me and helped shape me into the leader I hope to be after college. $3,000 Timmons, Kroll & Jacobsen Scholarship Lori Dvorak Bondurant, IA Parents: Robert & Julie Dvorak Lori has shown pigs for 8 years at the Polk County Fair, Iowa State Fair, AK-SAR-BEN, North American Livestock Exhibition and Iowa Jackpot Shows. She has also shown cattle and participated in the Governors Charity Steer Show as well as the Biggest Boar Competition at the Iowa State Fair. She has served on County Council, high school Student Council and a 4 year officer of her 4-H Club. Active in PEOPEL PE (a class for special needs kids) and Circle of Friends (extracurricular activity for special needs kids), Teens Against Human Trafficking and a volunteer at Camp Sunnyside of Easter Seals, she has certainly been actively involved in community service. An incoming freshman at Iowa State with a major in Animal Science she hopes to someday operate her own livestock business. She expressed, In the future I hope to mentor young people so they may have the opportunities I have enjoyed. $3,000 Tom & Donna Lauterbach Breeding Heifer Scholarship Shayne Wiese Manning, IA Parents: David & Diana Wiese Working hard on his family s Hereford seedstock operation, Shayne absolutely loves heading outside and helping improve their beef operation. He has started his own cattle herd. A junior this fall at Iowa State in Animal Science, Shayne has been extremely active in extracurricular activities. He has been a member of the Meat Animal Evaluation Team, an ISU Ambassador Executive Board Member, CALS Student Council Member as well as being very active in the Alpha Gamma Rho Fraternity, Greek Week, Emerging Greek Leadership Council and VEISHEA. He was asked to be a judge for the Iowa Cattleman s Foundation Beef Extravaganza Contest where he took pride in teaching high school kids about proper practices in beef management and help build their passion for the beef industry. He states, I have the opportunity to return home and I am not going to coast into it without bringing in new ideas. $2,500 Cargill Agriculture Scholarship Megan Collison Rockwell City, IA Parents: Timothy & Lori Collison Megan has been very successful showing beef and sheep in 4-H and FFA. She began an Angus cow herd at the age of 9 and has expanded her genetics via artificial insemination and embryo transfer. Her Angus project has earned her a FFA Star Finalist Award in Agri-Science, Heifer of the Year Award and the prestigious award of 2014 Champion Showman at the National Junior Angus Show. She has also employed AI and embryo transfer in her sheep flock. An Animal Science/Pre-Vet Major at ISU her major activities include: College of Agriculture & Life Science Student Ambassador, Block and Bridle Social Committee Tri-Chair, on committees for B & B Cyclone Classic and Sheep Sales. Megan is a teaching assistant for the Animal Science Anatomy Course where she enjoys working hands on with the students. She declared, The many opportunities I have taken advantage of in 4-H, FFA and college have developed my strong commitment to make a difference in the future of agriculture. 11

8 $2,500 Cargill Agriculture Scholarship Erica Baier Adel, IA Parents: Brad & Jodi Baier Erica will enter ISU this fall majoring in Agriculture Education. In FFA she has served as Chapter Vice President and President. She was as the South Central Vice President getting the opportunity to travel the great state of Iowa and lead 14,000 FFA members. Erica was also named Star Chapter Farmer, 2013 Iowa FFA Reserve Champion Specialty Crop Production, 2013 Iowa FFA Individual Ag Sales Champion, 2014 Team Ag Sales Champion (7 th nationally) and the 2015 Reserve Champion in Vegetable Production. Erica s primary interest has been beef cattle production where she has invested in her own cow/calf herd using money earned working for a neighbor cattle farmer who has Parkinson s disease. She states, I have lived my life to this point expecting more of myself than others. I first and foremost try to significantly contribute before asking others to help out with events, projects and meetings. $2,000 Boehringer Ingelheim Vetmedica Scholarship Celene Slifka State Center, IA Parents: Darrell & Cheryl Slifka An Animal Science/Pre-Vet major at Iowa State, Celene has worked on several veterinary medicine research projects including: mucopolysaccharidoses (an inherited group of fatal diseases), toxicology and reproduction of the ovary and seasonal infertility in sows. She traveled to Utah to a 2500 sow unit to conduct the studies. She has been actively involved with Block and Bridle Club s Hunger Fight, Little North American, Academic Quadrathlon Co-Chair and Tri-Chair Summer Sausage & Cheese Committee as well as a 2014 ISU Farm Tour Guide. She has shown horses for eight years and is involved with the Block and Bridle Horse Interest Group and served on the Horse Show Committee. She declares, I will become a veterinarian so that I can help provide the next generation with a safe food source as well as strive to feed an ever growing world population. $2,000 Cattleman s Beef Quarters Scholarship Aubree Beenken Buckingham, IA Parents: Marc & Angie Beenken Since she was old enough to walk, Aubree has been involved in raising cattle. She helped her family start their purebred Gelbvieh and Balancer operation. She has served as Treasurer and 3 years as Vice President of the Iowa Junior Gelbvieh Association. Aubree has participated in the Youth Beef Team and received 1 st place with her partner in the Iowa Cattleman s Foundation Beef Scholarship Extravaganza. She has been elected as President of her 4-H Club, 4-H County Council, FFA Chapter and her senior class. As Tama County Beef Queen for 2 years she enjoyed the opportunity speaking with consumers and cattlemen. Aubree also participated in numerous FFA activities including livestock judging, ag sales, soil judging and job interview. She states, Through my diverse area of interest I have the ability to relate to others, inspire others to participate, be open to new ideas and value teamwork. $2,000 IFAA Christian Brothers Swine Scholarship Matthew Schulte Dorchester, IA Parents: David & the late Julie Schulte Matthew showed swine throughout all of his years in 4-H and FFA while working on his father s farrow to finish operation. He continued his passion for the swine industry at Iowa State where he will be a senior in Animal Science. He is the current ISU Block and Bridle Club President, has represented Block and Bridle on the CALS Student Council, been a member of the 2014 ISU Intercollegiate Meats Judging Teams and an Animal Science Mentor. Matthew has also chaired the Block and Bridle 2014 Spring Market Hog Show, 2013 Summer Sausage and Cheese Fundraiser and the 2013 Grill Team. To develop further interest and education in the swine industry, he interned at a 6000 head sow farm and at Tyson Foods in carcass merchandising. Matthew feels his vast swine and meats experience will set him up for a successful career to help improve the future of the swine industry. 12

She has had great success at the local, state and national level including last year with a heifer that won two National Supreme Championships. She has served on the Iowa and National Junior Maine Anjou Board of Directors for the past two years. Kennedy is currently the President of the Iowa Junior Beef Breeds Association. She has served as Vice President of her FFA Chapter as well as many committee chairmanships. Kennedy started her own wood shavings supply business for local 4-H and FFA livestock exhibitions. After receiving the FFA Iowa Degree she has a goal of obtaining the American Degree. A fifth generation beef producer she actively participates in her family s cow calf operation. Showing at her county, the Iowa State Fair, the Beef Expo and Iowa Junior Breeds Association Shows, she has earned several championship honors. As Reporter of her FFA Chapter, Maggie has represented her chapter at the FFA National Convention and the State Legislative Symposium for the Advancement of Agriculture. She has participated in FFA Ag Sales (State Gold Award), the Mahaska County Ag Days, at the Nelson Pioneer Farm and in farm safety as well as helped organize an annual FFA Farm and Home Show to generate funds for FFA scholarships. She states, Through 4-H, FFA and IJBBA I have developed a strong network throughout the beef industry. Motivated by inspirational speakers, I have a strong desire to be an advocate for agriculture. $2,000 IFAA Earl Freel Memorial Sheep Participation Scholarship Jenny Petersen Knoxville, IA Parents: James & Julie Petersen Jenny grew up on a family farm that raises over 1000 sheep each year. She has shown sheep extensively; however, in the beginning usually placed toward the bottom of the class. With hard work and perseverance she has accomplished her goal of winning a Championship Market Lamb at the County Fair. Jenny loves teaching others how to raise and show sheep. She is holding a show clinic this year to help 4-Hers with their sheep and goat projects. In addition to sheep Jenny has had bucket calves, swine, rabbits and chicken projects. She has been a 4-H County Council Member, Vice President of her FFA chapter and participated in various CDE projects such as Chapter Website, Conduct of Meeting and Painting it Pink in honor of breast cancer. Due to her love for teaching developed through 4-H and FFA activities; Jenny will major in Ag Ed and Ag Communication at Iowa State. She indicated, Leadership is about helping people achieve success along side yourself. $2,000 Bart Nelson Memorial Sheep Scholarship Shelton Hatch Gladbrook, IA 13 Parents: Kenneth & Shelleen Hatch Shelton has exhibited both sheep and cattle at local, state and nationally. The highlight was reaching a goal by showing the Reserve Champion Market Ewe at AK-SAR-BEN and making the Sale of Champions. From President of her local 4-H Club, officer positions in FFA to a member of 4-H County Council, Shelton always strived to be the best leader she could be because she knew there were many younger members looking up to her for guidance. Another highlight and important experience for Shelton was serving as the Tama County Fair Queen. She declares, These leadership experiences will hopefully lead to a successful career in agriculture as they taught me to network with children and adults, as well as communication and public relations skills. 10 $2,000 IFAA Excellence in Swine Participation Scholarship Mitch Holcomb Winterset, IA 14 Parents: John & Gretchen Holcomb A major in Animal Science awaits Mitch as he enters Iowa State this fall. Raising and exhibiting show pigs, he developed a love for the swine industry. This past year he began farrowing his own sows. Very active in FFA, he has held the offices of Sentinel, Vice President and President in his senior year. He has qualified at the state level in Ag Impact, Experience the Action Team and Farm Ag Business. Mitch helps fellow FFA members by boarding livestock projects for them on his family farm. As an advocate for livestock production Mitch has actively participated in 5 th Grade Ag Day, agriculture awareness activities in the community during National FFA week and making other students aware of the importance of agriculture. My continued hard work will make me be a successful contributor to the swine industry. $2,000 IFAA Overall Project Scholarship Katelyn Warin Maloy, IA Parents: Joe & Donna Warin Katelyn is proud to be the fifth generation to work on her family farm that has been in operation since She has shown beef cattle extensively in 4-H and accumulated a herd of over 20 head. She was chosen as one of 18 interns from across the nation for the National Cattleman s Beef Association Convention in San Antonio. A senior at Iowa State majoring in Ag Communication & International Ag with an Animal Science minor Katelyn has participated in the ISU Study Abroad Program in Spain (2013), France, Italy and Switzerland (2014). She has served as President of Sigma Alpha Professional Agriculture Society and the Collegiate FFA/Agricultural Education Club. Katelyn has also been a CALS Ambassador, active in VEISHEA and served as Co-Chair and committee member for numerous FFA/AG Ed Club and Block and Bridle events. It has given me the confidence and opportunity that will continue to grow as I start my career. $2,000 IFAA Overall Project Scholarship Spencer Pech Winthrop, IA Parents: Rick & Ann Pech Spencer will be an incoming freshman at Iowa State this fall majoring in Agricultural Engineering with an emphasis on Land and Resource Management. He states, As a young agriculturist, I recognize the problems that face the future of our industry. It is evident to me that if we want to feed the world in 50 years we will need to better conserve the land and water. Spencer has served as Treasurer and President of his FFA Chapter and chosen to attend Boys State where he was elected as Deputy Director of Agriculture. In FFA he competed in Farm Business Management CDE receiving 1 st place at the state level and received the Star Over Iowa in Agri Placement Award. He also has a genuine interest in swine production. He received the state Swine Placement Proficiency Award as well as a gold award at the National Contest. In addition Spencer managed the Starmont FFA test plot for 3 years and brought in sponsorships and new techniques. This sparked his interest in land and water preservation. $2,000 IFAA Overall Project Scholarship Wesley Reever Glidden, IA Parents: Tim & Lora Reever Wesley manages a 60 head cow/calf operation with Reever Brothers Cattle Company. He maintains financial records supervising feeding and management and is responsible for breeding and calving. He has employed artificial insemination and embryo transplant into the operation. In FFA he has served as President, Treasurer and test plot manager. He received his FFA Iowa Degree in beef production in Wesley has been active in livestock judging, and won junior intermediate and senior showmanship awards as well as winning several beef heifer and market championship awards. Wesley will major in Animal Science/Pre-Vet at Iowa State and hopes to become a large animal veterinarian someday operating his own clinic. He expressed, My participation in 4-H, FFA and school activities has given me leadership opportunities that allowed me to grow as a person and have the confidence to meet my goal of becoming a veterinarian.

She also raises purebred Simmental, Maine Anjou and crossbred cattle. She has been involved with the Iowa Junior Breeds Association. Heather has served as her FFA Chapter s Secretary, President of 4-H Club and on 4-H County Council for 3 years. She was awarded the Washington DC Citizenship Trip. She has participated in Greenhand Quiz (Gold) Conduct of Meeting, Parliamentary Procedures Team and in livestock judging. Heather also served as the Hardin County Pork Princess. She helped at 4-H Day Camp and helped organize the 4-H Fire Up. She has aslo served as Plymouth County Council Vice President, her FFA Chapter Reporter, High School Student Body President as well as Student Council President. She has also been a Plymouth, Sioux and Lyon Counties 4-H Ambassador and the Plymouth County Fair Queen. Community service was of great interest to Cali and she has been promoting heart health by being actively involved in Heart Walks, Go Red for Women Luncheon and Siouxland Heart Ball as well as raising over $2500 for the American Heart Association. Although away at Iowa State majoring in Ag Business, she is still active in her family s flock and has continued her Sheep Production SAE in FFA. By working hard with her father to improve the genetics of their flock, she has worked her way from the bottom of the class at the Iowa State Fair and national shows to the top. Kaci has won the State FFA Sheep Production Entrepreneurial Efficiency Award and been awarded the American FFA Degree. At Iowa State Kaci is active in both Block and Bridle and the Agriculture Business Club. She has served as Secretary and President of the Block and Bridle Sheep Interest Group, a peer mentor for the Agricultural Business Program and involved in Career Day and Travel Committee in the Ag Business Club. 12 $1,500 Swine Industry Scholarship Celeste Swanson Clarion, IA Parents: Stuart & Lori Swanson Raised on a family farrow to finish swine operation, Celeste had swine projects for 9 years. Since she wanted to give back to 4-H and the Wright County Fair, she used proceeds of her swine project to build and donate a sunscreen for the fair s new show arena. She has also helped organize swine showmanship clinics and swine feeding and nutrition meetings. Celeste is a founding member of the Wright County Pig Club the only club of this type in the state of Iowa. In 4-H she has been President of her Club, a member of the County Teen Council for 5 years, actively involved in Share the Fun for several years. She has received the junior, intermediate, senior and long term County Swine Award as well as the Chicago Trip Award. Celeste will major in Agricultural Business and Animal Science at Iowa State. She states, Leadership goes beyond school, 4-H, and community. It is important in my family life to be a good role model for my younger sisters. $1,500 Iowa Purebred Swine Council Scholarship Alex Conover Holstein, IA Parents: Burdette Conover & Sharon Cooper Alex s family has been raising meat quality Berkshires since the early 1900 s. He has continued the family tradition of showing high quality Berkshires at the State Fair in 4-H and FFA. A junior this fall at Iowa State with a major in Animal Science, Alex is a member of the 2015 Iowa State Intercollegiate Meat Judging Team. He is currently President of the Block and Bridle Swine Interest Group, was Co-Chair of Proven To Win Pig Sale, and a Spring Market Hog Show committee member. Selected as the 2015 Iowa Pork Producer Premier Youth Ambassador he was humbled by the passion producers share for the swine industry which re-invigorated that same passion and hope he has for the future of the swine industry. He states, The pure joy of a first year 4-Her loading his very first pig is one that I will not soon forget. Events like these give me hope to do my best to teach a new generation the love of agriculture so many of us now enjoy. $1,500 Iowa Purebred Swine Council Scholarship Tyler Triggs Mount Ayr, IA Parents: Kevin & Kathy Triggs Starting out with one sow, Tyler and his brother have built a herd of 30 purebred sows. Showing very successfully at the county, state and national level their herd won the Premier Spotted Exhibitor of the 2014 National Barrow Show and Grand Champion Spotted Gilt at the 2014 Worlk Pork Expo. He has also started a small herd of production cattle. Tyler has served as President of his FFA Chapter leading his chapter from no Iowa Degree Awards to 5 during his tenure. He personally was named Star Chapter Farmer and received the Iowa Famer Degree. Tyler survived childhood cancer which has put a strain on availability of funds for college; however, he is very determined to enter ISU this fall and obtain a Degree in Animal Science/Agricultural Business. After graduation he plans to continue the family tradition of raising and showing swine as well as expanding the opertion to include a boar stud. $1,500 Zoetis Swine Scholarship Katlyn Kahler Cambridge, IA Parents: Wade & Pam Kahler Katlyn will be a junior at ISU majoring in Animal Science this fall. Katlyn is currently serving as the ISU Block and Bridle s Swine Interest Group Secretary and is involved in other campus activities including the Proven to Win Pig Sale, Little North American, Spring Market Hog Show, Sigma Alpha Professional Agricultural Sorority and Bacon Expo. She is also a part of the National Pork Board s #RealPigFarming student force. Katlyn served as the 2014 Iowa Pork Princess which allowed her to advocate for the swine industry all over the state and country. After graduation, Katlyn hopes to gain acceptance to Iowa State s Animal Science MBA program and go on to work in the animal pharmaceutical industry. 16

Allison is a very active member of ISU s Block & Bridle club where he has been active in the swine interest group, Little North American, Farm Tour committee, Proven to Win Pig Sale committee, and also serves as a B&B philanthropy tri-chair. Outside of Block and Bridle, Allison is a Public Relations Chair for the ISU Collegiate Republicans Club. After graduation Allison hopes to find a career that allows her to focus on agriculture policy at the state or federal level. $1,000 Iowa Pork Producers Scholarship Colton Twinam - Crawfordsville, IA Parents: Layne & Paulette Twinam Colton will enter ISU this fall with a major in Agricultural Studies. Colton s passion for his family s farm has driven him to become very knowledgeable of swine and crop production at a young age. Colton has recently purchased sixty pigs on his own to raise and learn from. This experience has helped him to realize just how strong his passion for the swine industry is. After college I want to get into the family business and continue raising pigs, says Colton. He has also been very involved in 4-H and FFA by being on the 4-H County Council, FFA Livestock Judging Team and the FFA Agronomy Team. Pork Industry Scholarship Josie Burgett Pleasantville, IA Parents: Todd & Dena Burgett Growing up with a lot of exposure to the swine industry, Josie has developed an undeniable passion for swine. Apart from showing pigs growing up, she has also been very involved in the Pleasantville FFA Chapter holding several offices and leading events such as elementary ag day, farm safety day, and the career fair. Josie also has a strong passion for public speaking. She was named an All State Performer with her speech entitled Animal Welfare and Agricultural Food Production. Josie states, doing the research for this speech really inspired me to become part of the ag industry. She plans accomplishing this goal by attending Iowa State University in the fall majoring in Agricultural Business with a potential marketing or communications minor. $1,000 Jim Lettow Swine Memorial Scholarship Lexi Merek Riverside, IA Parents: Time & Heather Merek Lexi has a very diverse involvement in the agriculture industry. Her interest in agriculture stems from showing her first pig at only five years old. While Lexi continues to show pigs today on a national level, she is also involved in many other activities as well. She is currently a tri-chair of ISU s Bacon Expo, an At Large Director for the National Junior Swine Association Junior Board, Secretary of the ISU College of Ag and Life Science Ambassador program and co-chair of ISU s Block and Bridle Club s Philanthropy committee. 14 $1,500 John & Emily Putney Scholarship Drew Christensen Exira, IA Parents: Dan & Jill Christensen Drew got his start in the beef cattle industry by helping his father and grandfather with their cow/calf herds. Once Drew was old enough, he got put in charge of the reproductive side of his father s 80 head herd. Drew selects the sires for the cows he chooses to artificially inseminate and he selects the herd bulls for the other cows. This experience has driven Drew to attend Kirkwood Community College in the fall majoring in Beef Production Management. After completing this degree, Drew would like to manage his own cow/calf operation and be a seed stock salesman. Drew s strong FFA background has also led him to where he is today. Serving as the Audubon FFA Chapter President for 2 years and SW District Treasurer have helped to enhance Drew s leadership skills. $1,500 Russ Brannen/Kent Nutrition Group Memorial Beef Scholarship Kelsey Pretz Columbus Junction, IA Parents: Michael & Dayle Pretz Kelsey has been very active in the Columbus Junction FFA Chapter serving as the chapter s president and participating in numerous FFA contests including Livestock Judging at the Iowa Beef Expo and Iowa Pork Congress. She has also lead events such as the mutton busting contest, chicken/rabbit scramble, Little Hands on the Farm, and the Clover Kid Bottle Calf Show. Kelsey has also received her FFA Iowa Degree due to her extensive beef cattle SAE. Kelsey chooses to focus her SAE on beef cattle because of her experiences with her family s cow/calf herd and her own experiences showing cattle. Her interest in the beef cattle industry is why she has chosen to attend DMACC in Boone, IA majoring in Agriculture Studies. With this degree she would like to pursue a career in beef production or nutrition sales. $1,000 Schlutz Family Beef Breeding Scholarship Raylee Kruse - Rudd, IA Parents: Terry & Allison Kruse Raylee is a soon to be freshman at Iowa State University majoring in Agriculture and Society. Raylee s passion for Angus cattle was made clear in her application. Since the age of 7, Raylee has spent countless hours working on her Angus show cattle and because of that she is able to recognize the value of hard work and dedication. While Raylee isn t sure where her Ag and Society major at ISU will take her, she is confident that she will be dedicated to whatever she may be doing. FFA and 4-H have helped to teach Raylee the value of dedication. She has lead numerous volunteer events through FFA and 4-H including food bank collections, Miracle Tree, Walk for Smiles, Project Lynus and Main Street flower planting. $1,000 Iowa Cattlemen s Foundation Scholarship Bailey Core - Pleasantville, IA Parents: Mark & Deb Core Early on Bailey discovered her passion for the beef industry. She has shown cattle since the age of 4 and has since started her own herd. She has taken this a step further by organizing her family s annual heifer sale. Outside of her own operation, Bailey has held numerous leadership positions in the show cattle industry including being the American Maine Anjou Association President and Iowa Junior Beef Breeds President. Aside from all of this responsibility, Bailey is also a part of ISU s Livestock Judging team. She is currently at Iowa State University majoring in Agricultural Communications with an Animal Science minor. While in high school she has tried to maximize this potential by holding numerous FFA and 4-H offices as well as participating in FFA events such as farm business management, ag sales, business planning, and ag communications. These CDE s have helped Roni to come to the decision to major in Agricultural Business at North Iowa Area Community College and then transfer to Iowa State University. $1,000 Midwest Club Calf Producers Scholarship Logan Lafrenz Wilton, IA Parents: Jeff & Dawn Lafrenz Logan has been raising purebred Angus with his family since he was young. He has also shown these cattle at the Cedar county fair, Iowa State Fair, and local IJBBA sanctioned shows. A soon to be junior with a major in Animal Science and General Business at Iowa State, Logan hopes to obtain a job with these degrees that allows him to help beef producers improve the efficiencies of their operations. Within the last year, Logan has obtained several new leadership positions at ISU including Block and Bridle Sergeant at Arms, Advertisement Chair of Block and Bridle s Cyclone Classic cattle show and Agriculture Placement Chair of Alpha Gamma Rho Fraternity. Logan says, I am extremely proud of the leadership roles that I have taken on. $1,000 Story County Cattleman s Association Scholarship Jamie Flynn State Center, IA Parents: Todd & Kim Flynn Jamie got her start in the cattle industry by working with a bottle bucket calf. It didn t take her long realized her passion for agriculture and the beef industry. She eventually began to with her family s cow/calf herd assisting with feeding decisions and the A.I. processes. Jamie plans to attend Iowa State University in the fall majoring in Agricultural Studies in order to someday be able to return to her family s farm. She also hopes to be a leader in her community someday. Being active in 4-H and FFA as well as volunteering her time to go on church mission trips have helped to prepare her for this. Jamie says, I have discovered that part of my mission in life is to service others. $1,000 Clayton and Colton Novak Memorial Scholarship Christian Graham, Grinnell, IA Parents: Thomas and Jeri Graham Genetics, cattle selection, herd health, artificial insemination, embryo transplant, heat detection, reproductive synchronization, and nutrition are all educational experiences and skills I have gained while working on the family farm, says Christian. It is clear is his application that he as an extensive knowledge base of the beef cattle industry. Of these experiences, he is most intrigued by nutrition. Christian has attended numerous workshops to help him understand beef nutrition better. He plans to attend Iowa State University as a freshman this fall majoring in Agricultural Business and Animal Science. He hopes this academic path with help him obtain a career as a Beef Nutritional Specialist. $500 Dick Frye Memorial Scholarship Truman Chamness Blairsburg, IA Parents: Gary and Nicole Chamness Truman s success in the show ring and his experiences showing cattle are the main driving force behind his interest in the beef industry. Attending show cattle clinics and learning from his peers have allowed Truman become very knowledgeable about the show cattle industry. He one day hopes to have a herd of cows to produce his own show calves. I would also like to educate youth who have the same desire to learn as I did, says Truman. 16 $1,000 Iowa John Deere Dealers Scholarship Trevor Stevenson Wheatland, IA Parents: Terry & Mary Stevenson Trevor s interest in machinery stemmed from being around the machinery growing up on his family s row crop and cow/calf farm. Farm machinery has given me the ability to think about how different areas of mechanics work, such as fluid power, electricity and power train, says Trevor in his application. These unique interests led Trevor to Iowa State University to major in Agriculture Systems Technology and Industrial Technology where he will be a senior in the fall. After graduation, he hopes to pursue a career in product development or test engineering all while working his way back to the family farm. This summer Trevor is interning with John Deere as a Product Development Specialist. It is easy to say he is on track with his goals. $1,000 Dean and Adele Bowden Scholarship Kayla Toennies Chelsea, IA Parents: Mark and Jackie Toennis Stepping outside of her comfort zone and embarking on an 8 week internship in Ethiopia while still in high school opened Kayla s eyes to the world around her. Her interest in the beef industry has since grown. Tara works closely with the Iowa Cattlemen s Foundation, Iowa Beef Industry Council and the Nation Junior Angus Association. These experiences have allowed Tara to realize her passion for advocacy work. She is going to be a senior in Ag Education this fall at Iowa State University with a career goal of teaching agriculture, producing beef and using her farm as a site to demonstrate and educate students and consumers. The best part about being involved in meat science, says Carl, is seeing the efforts of genetics, breeding, management, and feeding come together to get the best product. Carl has since become the treasurer or ISU s Block and Bridle club and joined ISU s intercollegiate Meat Judging Team. His passion for protein has led him to pursue an internship this summer with Cargill as an Operations Intern at one of their beef plants in Texas. Caring for these cows on a daily basis is part of the reason the Brody chose to go to ISU to major in Animal Science. With this degree, Brody hopes to get into veterinary school so he can someday start up his own practice in eastern Iowa emphasizing on beef cattle work. He has worked in sow units, held internships conducting research at packing plants and on swine production and is currently a Pork Sales intern with Cargill. David is an intricate part of his family s farm where they raise beef cattle and grow corn, soybeans, alfalfa, oats and rye. He has taken his interest in farming and agronomy a step further by starting up his own business where he grows and sells over fifteen varieties of pumpkins and over twenty varieties of gourds. After graduating from Iowa State David plans to return to the farm and buy more stock cows, implement new technologies and start up a farrow to finish operation. $1,000 NutraFlo PureGrade Fertilizer Scholarship Nicole Huser Sac City, IA Parents: Tim & Martha Huser Touring the Monsanto headquarters, taking an advanced biotechnology class in high school and participating in the World Food Prize are just a few of the things that can be credited to sparking Nicole s passion in genetics. She has hopes of someday working on genetically modified crops to grow in a wider variety of environments while still producing a large yield. In order to achieve these ambitious goals, Nicole plans to attend Iowa State University to major in Genetics. While she doesn t have much interest in returning to a small animal emergency clinic someday, she would like to specialize in equine or animal rehabilitation. Katherine s interest in equine stems from her six year involvement with the Miracles in Motion program where physically and mentally disabled persons can ride therapeutic horses. She has shown poultry through 4-H and FFA at the county and state level since she was of age. Her success showing has inspired her to hatch her own Blue Laced Red Wyandottes to exhibit. Madalyn also goes out of her way to teach other 4-H and FFA members how to raise and show successful poultry projects. By taking initiative and enrolling in numerous agricultural and agronomy classes, Madalyn has determined she wants to major in Agronomy at Iowa State University this fall. Buildings Scholarship Noelle Gray Jefferson, IA Parents: Brett & Melisse Schilling Noelle will be attending Iowa State University this fall majoring in Animal Science so she can enhance her interest in animal disease. Growing up around hog production and discovering the ailments the hogs can contract and the associated cures is where Noelle s interest first began. She also has had the opportunity to shadow her mother who is a veterinarian. He showd swine at the Story County Fair and Iowa State Fair with particular interest in the Production & Derby Division. In FFA he was the leader of the Wilton FFA swine herd which produced pigs to give to members that wanted the experience and thrill of a swine project even though they didn t have money or facilities to do it on their own. He states, I took great pride in seeing the success these hogs had at the show, but more importantly the knowledge that I had helped open a new door for other students. In his 9 years of showing pigs he has won several prestigious awards at the Muscatine County Show and the Iowa State Fair. Cole has been active in FFA community projects including the chapter Petting Zoo and their Field Day to invite people from the community out to the FFA farm. He indicates, I enjoy teaching young people about agriculture and livestock production with the goal that they like the animals and maybe will then join 4-H and FFA. In high school Cole has been Vice President of Student Council and on the Student Advisory Board. Cole will major in Ag Business with a minor in Spanish this fall at Iowa State. As time passed through his showing he helped his grandfather reach 65 consecutive years of showing at the Iowa State Fair. In FFA Logan has served as President and Treasurer of his FFA Chapter. He has also taken an active part in the Chapter s Farm including helping to design and layout plans to remodel its swine barn and help organize and manage a petting zoo for the summer. He was selected to participate in the National Council on Youth Leadership. Ever since he was born he never missed an Iowa Sate Fair. 20 $500 Tall Corn Meat Goat Wether Association Scholarship Austin Lanphier New Sharon, IA Parents: Allen Lanphier & Jodi Pollpeter Austin has worked year around as a farmhand for a local goat farm for the past 5 years. This has given him and his two brothers the opportunity to raise and show their own meat goats at the Mahaska County Fair, Iowa Sate Fair and open shows with great success. He is most proud of his showmanship awards in addition to the champions he has shown. In FFA he served as the President of his chapter for 3 consecutive years. During his tenure as President there was nearly a 50% increase in membership and the Chapter became invovled in more activities. Austin won a gold at state in Ag Sales. The skill developed in the Ag Sale Competition was very useful when he started selling sweet corn as his FFA supervised agriculture experience. Austin will major in Animal Science and Business Administration at Iowa State this fall. $500 Stockman s Inn Scholarship for Ag Business Trey Forsyth Charles City, IA Parents: Todd & Lisa Forsyth Trey will be a junior in Agricultural Business and Agricultural Society at Iowa States. She states that her mission trip to Haiti, opened my eyes to the dire need for food and basic survival necessities and skills that is prevalent in many parts of the world. Drew s enjoyment of the cattle industry began at age five with his first bottle calves in preparation to show at county fair. His 4-H beef projects began the foundation of his small purebred Limousine and Lim-Flex herd. As Drew decided to develop his herd, he attended Cattle Visions in Missouri, an artificial insemination school. Through 4-H he has participated in Ak-Sar-Ben Livestock Quiz Bowl and livestock judging; winning the Franklin County Fair Junior Livestock Judging Contest, was a member of the North Central District Champion and the 4 th place state team. Growing up on her family farm she became active in the beef and poultry industry. Daiton became the Winneshiek County Beef Queen and also received the Winneshiek County Beef Opportunity Grant. She has served as President and Vice-President of her 4-H Club, as a Youth Representative of the 4-H Youth Development Council and as Reporter of her County Council. Daiton has served on FFA committees and teams as well as coaching Large Group Speech teams and being a Farm to School Cross Age teacher. Daiton was a delegate to the Washington DC Leadership Conference. She states, This week long conference left an indelible mark on my life as I learned more about myself and what motivates me. Anastasia Frazee Glenwood, IA Parents: Arnold & Tracey Frazee Anastasia is looking forward to attending Iowa State University where she plans to study Dietetics. Anastasia has been showing cattle all nine years she has been involved in 4-H at her county fair and Ak-Sar-Ben Stock Show. Her beef interests lead her to becoming a mentor for the Trowbridge Cattle Class. However, she believes her true passion for Dietetics was exposed through Educational Presentations in 4-H; allowing her to research and present information on super foods and their benefit to various audiences. Anastasia s leadership roles include serving as the Glenwood Community Red Out Event Chairperson, FCCLA District 13-N President and her 4-H Club President, to name a few. She plans to use her hard work ethic, leadership skills and formal university training to someday educate and create a healthier society. Tyler Frasher Anamosa, IA Parents: Jerry & Kristy Frasher Tyler s passion for the swine industry started with the hard working habits developed from his work in the family hog barns. His passion carried on into the show industry within 4-H and FFA. Exhibiting at local, state and national levels, led him to become an active member of the Iowa Swine Jackpot Series and Team Purebred Association. Tyler has been a successful showman in 4-H and FFA within the swine area not only winning championship but also numerous showmanship awards. His leadership within his local club and chapter (3 year officer) are coupled with his athletic leadership and National Honor Society membership. Tyler will be studying Pre-Veterinary Science at Coe College and would like to continue to be an advocate for the swine industry through his educational journey and into his future career. 25

22 Jaxon Goedken Lamont, IA Parents: Randy & Colleen Goedken Growing up on his family farm, Jaxon helped his parents and grandparents while absorbing knowledge to use in his own livestock production in the future. He exhibited beef and dairy cattle as well as swine throughout his 4-H and FFA career. Jaxon received his Iowa FFA degree and placed first with his team for their farm business management CDE and placed third individually. He also placed first in the Experience the Action FFA Event. Serving as his FFA chapters Sentinel, Treasurer and Vice-President as well as his 4-H Club s Treasurer has developed his ability to acquire the communication and planning skills that he believes will be of great help both in college and the workforce. Jaxon will be attending Iowa State studying Agriculture Business. Jennie Greene Wayland, IA Parents: Joel & Luetta Greene Jennie has been active in both 4-H and FFA, growing up on a farm with horses. She has a strong interest in science and medicine and plans on majoring in Animal Science/Pre-Veterinary Medicine at ISU. While, Jennie has experience with swine, however, her main interest is in equine. She has helped organize a 4-H/FFA Horse Fun Day, received the outstanding Record Book Award for seven years and participated in Ag Safety Day, Ag Safety Contest and FFA District Leadership Contest. Jennie held two Saddle Club Cowgirl Queen Titles, is a member of the 4-H Horse and Pony Club and a member of National Honor Society. She places a strong emphasis on her education, and she says, Protecting the health and welfare of animals and ensuring a safe and healthy food supply to humans is important to her. Callie Greiner Keota, IA Parents: Eric & Paula Greiner Growing up in a farming community, Callie s passion for agriculture was instilled at a young age. Callie has enjoyed showing swine at the local and state level in 4-H and FFA, but has also served leadership roles in both organizations. She has served her 4-H club as Secretary and her FFA chapter as Vice-President and Treasurer. Callie is thankful for both organizations and is looking forward to expanding her knowledge and passion for the agriculture industry at Iowa State University as she studies Agriculture and Society. She feels her experiences in both organizations, along with National Honor Society, LEAD, DARE and serving as Student Body Secretary, have taught her how to speak and properly communicate with others, given her the ability to plan and organize events and work with others to accomplish a joint goal; all of which she plans to use to become an advocate in the agriculture industry. Gabrielle Kayser Waverly, IA Parents: Peter Kayser & Krista Hennager Gabrielle will be attending ISU to study Animal Science with the intent of studying Veterinary Medicine. She has spent the last four years working at the Waverly Veterinary Clinic, feeding her interest of companion and exotic animal veterinary medicine and care. Gabrielle has been an active member in 4-H and FFA serving the positions of FFA Reporter (her scrapbook placed third at state), Historian in her 4-H Club and as Vice-President for County Council. 23 Kyle Lafrenz Wilton, IA Parents: Jeffery & Dawn Lafrenz Kyle s choice to attend Iowa State University majoring in Agriculture Systems and Technology combines his two personal passions agriculture and technology. Growing up surrounded by agriculture, Kyle has seen firsthand the advancements of technology and its growing purpose in agriculture. Kyle continually made himself available to assist neighboring farmers with field work and baling hay, while remaining very active in 4-H, Student Council, and National Council of Youth Leadership. His 4-H experience began as a bottle calf project and continued into nine years of showing cattle. As 4-H does, it also steamed his interest into other areas, such as, welding and woodworking projects relevant to his cattle projects. He has served as his club s Vice President and is currently serving as club President and as the County Council Vice-President. Kyle believes that 4-H has made him a well-rounded individual by showing him the importance of community service and responsibility. Madison Lapke LaMotte, IA Parents: Tom & Bonnie Lapke Madison s participation in the World Food Prize, two years in a row discussing the malnutrition of women and children in Ethiopia, is a strong demonstration of her passion for public service and communication. Madison states, In order to adequately feed our growing population, we need people to continue to work in the agriculture field. in which, she recognizes and desires to be a part of the solution. She has spent her years being involved in 4-H, FFA, County Council, Young Leaders Council, Student Senate, Club Hope, Dance marathon, basketball, high school rodeo and her church; all of which she has held offices, organized and assisted in service projects and events. She has shown meat goats, cattle and horses in 4-H. Madison will be studying Agriculture Education and Agriculture Studies at ISU this fall. Morgan McEnany Nevada, IA Parents: Craig & Lisa McEnany Morgan will be attending Iowa State University to study Agriculture Communications. She has been active in 4-H and FFA conducting activities, giving presentations in Ag and Natural Recourses and competing in events pertaining to farm safety and other agricultural topics. Morgan has also participated in the World Food Prize Iowa Youth Institute, Global Youth Institute and awarded first place in the ISU Ag Communications of Tomorrow Essay Contest discussing How will we feed the world by 2050? These experiences have influenced her desire to pursue a career in communications. Morgan held numerous offices, received her Iowa FFA Degree, participated in soil judging at local and state levels, been active on the Story County Leadership Team, an entrepreneurial seed corn contractor and assisted with multiple community activities in her spare time. Megan Moklestad Forest City, IA Parents: Dave & Nancy Moklestad Megan is passionate about the beef industry, having raised and shown cattle for eight years. Her enjoyment of showing cattle began with her first bucket calf at age 8 and grew into exhibiting market steers, market heifers and breeding heifers at the local and state levels. She has also enjoyed exhibiting hogs, chickens and horses throughout her 4-H and FFA career. Megan has participated in several livestock judging contests and FFA contests throughout high school. Along with holding various offices in 4-H and FFA (President and Treasurer), Megan has also been active in National Honor Society, Student Council, four school bands, chorus, speech, athletics and church. She will be an incoming freshman at ISU with a major in Agriculture Business and a minor in Animal Science. 27

24 Caralyn Murphy Ankeny, IA Parents: Jeff & Carin Murphy An urban native of Polk County, Caralyn was a member of 4-H and open enrolled in a neighboring school ag classes to join FFA. She assumed leadership roles to be a role model to her prominently young 4-H club. She has been active in County Council and every year she entered a public speaking contest focused on agriculture. With an interest in renewable energy, Caralyn spent last summer conducting an experiment to test the benefits of Bio-Char on tomato plants to analyze water retention, yield and environment benefit. She also gave a presentation at the State Fair on renewable resources and their effect on agriculture. As a result of her increasing interest in renewable resources, she will be attending Iowa State University to study Agriculture Biochemistry. Michaela Ostendorf Madrid, IA Parents: Terry & Diane Ostendorf Michaela is headed to ISU to major in Biology. She graduated from Madrid Community High School, where she was a member of the National Honor Society and Vice-President of her class. She has been an active Boone County 4-Her, holding several leadership positions including President of her County 4-H Council. Michaela has been showing cattle for nine years now. She is active in the Junior Beef Breeds Association, the American Shorthorn Association and the Iowa Cattlemen s Association. Michaela also has a strong interest in horses. She participated in team grooming at the Iowa State Fair and attended ISU Horse Judging Camps. Michaela has also been involved with many volunteer activities that have not only benefited others but also strengthen her as an individual. Alex Pringnitz Spirit Lake, IA Parents: Doug & Nancy Pringnitz Alex will major in Agriculture and Biological Systems Engineering at ISU. Alex has served as President and Vice- President for both his 4-H Club and FFA chapter. Being an active member of 4-H and FFA, Alex has participated in and led many community service and enrichment projects, such as starting a Dance Marathon and making sandwiches for local farmers during harvest. Throughout his 4-H years, Alex also enjoyed showing and raising cattle. Alex also has a strong interest in crop production. During the past two years he rented a farm and made all the decision from seed varieties, spraying, harvesting and marketing. He states I learned more from actual farming than from any class. Allison Vincent Alleman, IA Parents: Robert & Molly Vincent Allison has been actively involved in the meat goat industry since she was nine and started her own goat herd. Her breeding and show selections have done very well in the show ring at local and state levels with several champions. In 2013, Allison became the Iowa Meat Goat Queen, becoming an active advocate for the industry within the agriculture community. Allison has held numerous offices in 4-H and FFA including County Council, a FFA Chapter officer and a delegate to the Washington Leadership Conference. She will be attending ISU to study Agriculture Business and Animal Science stating that her agriculture experiences have taught her that An effective leader recognizes others talents and motivates individuals to achieve common goals. 28

25 Jay Wessels Dyersville, IA Parents: Gary & Lori Wessels Jay aspires to combine both his passion for the land and machinery to generate new equipment and methods that will in turn help farmers across the globe and his own future farming operation. So it is no wonder Jay has chosen to study Agriculture Engineering at Iowa State University. Jay participated in the World Food Prize Iowa Youth Institute and attended the Global Youth Institute. He is active in 4-H and FFA, exhibiting swine, beef, goats, sheep and horses as well as participating in the National FFA Agriscience Fair. He was President of his FFA Chapter and has held numerous officers in his 4-H Club. Jay s leadership activities have taught him the importance of working hard, being organized and properly managing time and people. Emma Whalen Pilot Mound, IA Parents: Sean & Bonnie Whalen Leadership, citizenship, organization, time-management and oratory skills are those of which Emma feels she has acquired through her experiences and opportunities in 4-H. By embracing these skills, she believes she will be successful in obtaining a Biology degree from Iowa State University. Emma s passions revolve around animal and environmental biology. Through 4-H she became active in Adopt-A-Highway, Homegrounds Improvement and dedicating spare time to the improvement of her community through service projects. She has served two years on State Youth 4- H Council, was the 2014 Boone County Rabbit Queen and a member of Science Bowl Team. Emma actively exhibited sheep, goats, horses, chickens, rabbits and dogs, but has also taken at least one static exhibit to the State Fair every year. Taylor Wulf Hudson, IA Parents: Trevor & Sue Wulf Taylor did not always live on a farm, but she will tell you when her family moved to a farm at age 10, it was the best thing that could have ever happened to her and her family. Taylor is passionate about the cattle and swine industries, having raised and shown both for almost a decade. Active in both 4-H and FFA, Taylor was also the Black Hawk County Beef Princess and Queen and the Black Hawk County Pork Princess, Queen and Ambassador. She also participated in the Governor s Charity Steer Show, 4-H Animal Science Round-up and competed at the national level in FFA s Career Development Marketing Plan. Taylor s leadership continued into County Council, National Honor Society and her church. She will be attending Iowa State to study Agriculture Business and Animal Science. $1,000 FFA/IFAA Foundation Scholarship Amanda Anderson Algona, IA Parents: Matt & Dini Anderson Amanda will be attending Iowa State University this fall, majoring in Animal Science with a pre-veterinary focus where she dreams of attending veterinary school. At the Iowa State Fair, Amanda was a market hog and breeding gilt exhibitor for three years. As a member of the Algona FFA Chapter, she has served as chapter reporter, secretary and president. Amanda also served two years as the North Central District reporter and is currently serving as the Iowa FFA State Reporter. Amanda is currently raising five head of market hogs, nine head of market steers and four head of breeding heifers as her supervised agricultural experience program. 29

26 $1,000 FFA/IFAA Foundation Scholarship Kayla Dietz Nashua, IA Parents: Dan & Annette Dietz Kayla will be attending Iowa State University this fall, majoring in Agriculture Life Sciences and Education. After graduation, Kayla plans to have a job dealing with agriculture communication. Her dream job would be to work for a company like Farm Bureau and to be able to interact with people every day. At the Iowa State Fair, she has participated in the State Fair FFA crop show, exhibiting corn and crop display for three years as well as forage sheaves for two years. Kayla has served as chapter president and vice-president for the Nashua-Plainfield FFA Chapter and attended Washington Leadership Conference. Kayla s supervised agricultural experience consists of raising Holstein steers for Dairy Beef and raising 20 acres of corn for Diversified Crop Production. $1,000 FFA/IFAA Foundation Scholarship Hunter Hamilton Lone Tree, IA Parents: Stephen & Joyce Hamilton Hunter Catfish Hamilton will be attending Iowa State University this fall, majoring in Agricultural Education. Hunter sees himself teaching agriculture and advising an FFA chapter somewhere in the United States. At the Iowa State Fair, Hunter has worked as a Grandstand Usher for three years and volunteered at the Sale of Champions and Sheep Shearing Contest. He s been an active member of the Lone Tree FFA Chapter, serving as chapter president, vicepresident and sentinel. He also served as a Southeast District Officer for two years and is currently the Iowa FFA Southeast State Vice-President. His agricultural placement experience has been spent working at Buser Produce for the last three years as well as working at Hotz Farms and Hy-Vee Dairy Department. $1,000 FFA/IFAA Foundation Scholarship Kalee Leistikow Readlyn, IA Parents: Kevin & Deanne Leistikow Kalee will attend Iowa State University this fall where she plans to major in Liberal Arts and Massage Therapy with a swine production interest. Five years after graduating, she hopes to be working at a job within swine production and education. At the Iowa State Fair, Kalee was a Grandstand Usher for two years, was an Ag Demonstration team member and was also a photography exhibitor. During her time in the Wapsie Valley FFA Chapter, Kalee chaired a number of committees including Alumni, Citizenship, Finance and Cooperation and was also co-chair for several other committees. She also participated in Wapsie Valley s many volunteer activities. Kalee s supervised agricultural experience has been 100% ownership of Farmer Daycare and Home/Community Development. $1,000 FFA/IFAA Foundation Scholarship Blake Miller Atlantic, IA Parents: Gary & Shelly Miller Blake will attend Northwestern College in Orange City this fall where he plans to major in Biology. His career goal is to work in the animal or human medical field. Blake was a sheep exhibitor at the Iowa State Fair for three years, earning Champion Dorset Ram & Ewe as well as Champion Yearling Speckle Ewe. He worked as a Grandstand Usher for one year and also earned Superior Sheep Showman one year. In his time with the CAM FFA Chapter, Blake served as chapter president for two years and treasurer for one year. He participated in several contests and has earned his Iowa FFA Degree. His supervised agricultural experience consists of a 14 head pure bred Dorset flock and six head of Simmental and South Devon cows. 30

He plans to use this degree to gain employment with an Iowa-based agricultural firm to work with local producers and help them maximize profit margins and streamline their operations. His involvement with the Iowa State Fair includes earning a purple ribbon in Metal Working/Welding at the 2014 fair. During his time in the Audubon FFA Chapter, Cliffton served as chapter treasurer, traveled to Haiti for the FFA to Haiti Service Trip and also earned his Iowa FFA Degree in His supervised agricultural experience consists of raising seven acres of soybeans in 2013, 30 acres of corn in 2014 and working at Riesgaard Farm Supply since the spring of $1,000 FFA/IFAA Foundation Scholarship Alana Platte Fairbank, IA Parents: Dean & Tracy Platte Alana will attend Iowa State University this fall to major in Global Resource Systems. As a member of the Mid-Prairie FFA Chapter, he served as chapter president, reporter and chaplain. He participated in several contests and earned his Iowa FFA Degree in His supervised agricultural experience consists of swine show stock sows to produce litters to sell and four breeding heifers. $1,000 FFA/IFAA Foundation Scholarship Cassidy Simmons Guthrie Center, IA Parents: David & Nancy Simmons Cassidy will major in Ag Business and Animal Science (Livestock Production) at Southwest Iowa Community College this fall. She plans to use her education to pursue a career in the ag business industry and start her own cow-calf operation. Cassidy has spent the past three years exhibiting a wide variety of things at the Iowa State Fair, including poultry, wood working, photography and welding. She earned Grand Champion First Year Restored Tractor in Ag Mechanics. In her four years as a member of the Guthrie Center Tiger FFA Chapter, Cassidy competed in many contests both as an individual and with a team while she served as chapter secretary for two years. Her Supervised Ag Experience includes raising 60 laying hens, 1 miniature donkey and 2-3 acres for a horticulture project. She also restored a 1949 Farmall M. 31

She plans to gain employment in the agriculture communications career field to advocate for agriculture awareness and public knowledge. Megan worked as a Grandstand Usher at the Iowa State Fair for three years and participated as a floriculture exhibitor where she won 1 st place, grand champion of class. She earned the same award in crops contest. Megan was very active during her four years in the Tri-County FFA Chapter where she served as chapter secretary for two years and president for one. She also participated in Creed Speaking, Ag Broadcasting and Public Speaking contests. Her Supervised Ag Experience included 100% ownership of 13 head of feeder cattle, 0.4 acre of sweet corn and four head of market lambs.
