4 $5,000 Branstad Reynolds Agriculture Scholarship Karl Kerns - Clearfield, IA Parents: Steve & Becky Kerns Karl will be a senior in Animal Science at ISU this fall. Karl has been very active in all university activities at Iowa State serving as the General Business Manager for VEISHEA 2013, a Founding Executive Member of the Student Federation for Agriculture, on the AgE1 Student Advisory Team, and as an Ambassador for College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. Karl was selected as a member of Cardinal Key. He is also active in Block and Bridle and serves as an Alumni Committee Member. He had internships with Smithfield Premium Genetics, Trans Ova Genetics and Pork CRC in Australia. Karl states, I was born into a life with pigs and it has become my future life. He plans to seek a M.S. and PhD degree in porcine reproductive physiology. $5,000 Branstad Reynolds Agriculture Scholarship Lexi Marek - Riverside, IA Parents: Tim & Heather Marek Lexi has been very active with both swine and beef projects in 4-H and FFA as well as livestock judging. She was a member of the 2012 Champion 4-H Judging Team. Other activities include President of the Washington County 4-H Council, Washington County Pork Queen, County Fair Queen and First Runner Up in the Iowa State Fair Queen Contest. She was selected for National 4-H Congress and as Chapter Reporter. Their Chapter Reporter Record Book placed 3 rd in the state contest. Lexi states, I never give up the opportunity to share stories or pictures with others to tell the story of agriculture which I believe is vital for the future of our amazing industry. She will major in Ag Business and Education with a minor in Ag Communication at ISU. $5,500 Bruce Rastetter Agricultural Entrepreneurial Scholarship Brent Sexton Rockwell City, IA Parents: Keith & Barb Sexton Brent is a senior in Animal Science/Pre Vet at ISU. Brent has a minor in Entrepreneurial Studies, and has completed with internships with Porcus Swine Veterinary in Denmark, Collison Veterinary/Embryo Transfer and Harris Vaccines. Extremely active at the university level, he has served on the Greek Week Central Committee, Vice President and President of the Judi-cial Board, CALS Council-Ag Ambassadors Rep, Ag Week Tri-Chair, Homecoming Cy Squad, VEISHEA Parade Committee and Freshman Council Recruitment Co-Chair. He served on State 4-H Council and exhibited swine, beef and sheep in 4-H and FFA. He was the FFA National Agri Entrepreneurial Winner. Brent has enjoyed learning more about international agriculture with travel abroad trips to Australia, Costa Rica, Poland, Czech Republic, Germany and Uganda. $5,500 Bruce Rastetter Animal Science Scholarship Trisha Collins - Pleasantville, IA Parents: Monty & Renee Collins As an Animal Science major at ISU, Trisha has been very active in Block and Bridle and Animal Science Department activities. She has been a Peer Mentor and Teaching Assistant, helped organize the Ag Welcome BBQ, Ag Week and Fall Industry Tour. She has worked with the FAO on an animal genetics resource conversation project, interned with the Livestock Research Institute in Ethiopia and the USDA in cattle immunology as well as traveled to Ukraine and Bulgaria as part of ISU programs. In 4-H and FFA, Trisha was actively involved in the cattle industry and owns a small herd of Angus cattle. She has received her American Farmers Degree. Trisha states, Focusing on beef cattle and striving for achievement not only in the classroom, but through internships and international work, will prepare me to be a veterinarian, the future of the animal industry needs. 7

5 $5,500 Bruce Rastetter Biorenewable Resources Scholarship Jake Kent - Auburn, IA Parents: Rob & Sarah Kent Jake is an Agriculture Systems Technology major at ISU. He states, Agriculture has changed a great deal. I have the determination to help farmers by means of better quality and new development of equipment. Jake has served as an Iowa FFA State Officer and while at ISU has served as a judge at many district and sub state FFA contests. He has had engineering internships with Kuhn and Vermeer, and is currently working with AGCO on a summer internship. Through his activities with several ISU Clubs, he has always strived to find ways to make them serve students better. Growing up on a farrow to finish swine operation, Jake s 4-H and FFA projects revolved around the swine industry. $5,000 Mark Pearson Entrepreneur Memorial Scholarship Austin Kessler Walcott, IA Parents: Jim & Ann Kessler Austin states, I want to start my own business in the agriculture field by creating an innovation that will help solve tomorrow s problems. He has already started his entrepreneurial education by taking classes such as market research and participating in a market research and development internship at Macedonian Thrace Brewery on their new tea product, Tuvunu. He also is participating in a sales internship with Dow Agro Services this summer. Austin s 4-H and FFA projects revolved around showing cattle at the local, state and national levels. He held many leadership roles and participated in numerous non livestock projects such as Citizenship. Austin will be a junior majoring in Agricultural Business at ISU this fall. $5,000 Iowa Select Farms Scholarship Jake Keppy - Durant, IA Parents: Loren & Jeantee Keppy A senior in Animal Science at ISU, Jake s interest in swine started at an early age on their family commercial swine production farm. He has been interested in the development of a show pig herd. He has won numerous championships at local, state, and national shows. After transferring from Wartburg, he has become very active in the Block and Bridle. He is Vice President of the Swine Interest Group, a member of the Meat Evaluation Team, and was selected as the outstanding new Block and Bridle member. He states, I understand the responsibilities of a leadership role is to get other members involved in committees and events as well as passing down what I learned to members for future use. After graduation Jake plans to return to the farm. He has already rented his first farm this year. $5,000 Iowa Select Farms Scholarship Katlyn Kahler - Cambridge, IA Parents: Wade & Pam Kahler Katlyn is enrolled in a double major of Animal Science & Ag Business at ISU. She began her swine projects at an early age and has shown very successfully at local, state and national shows. She has particularly enjoyed participation in derby or production shows, showmanship, premier exhibitor, quiz bowl and judging programs. Katlyn has served on the State 4-H Council, Story County Leadership Team, Story County Inspiration Committee, and was selected as a delegate to the 2011 Citizenship Washington Focus Trip. Katlyn states, I have shared my knowledge of pigs not only with younger 4-H members, but also brought my knowledge of swine production into my local school. She plans a future career in the swine industry. 8

6 $5,000 Mark Pearson Memorial Scholarship by Cattlemen s Beef Quarters Lauren Barker Monticello, IA Parents: Ruhl & Cheryl Barker Lauren is a senior in Ag Communications & Advertising at ISU. Like Mark Pearson, she is a strong advocate of communications in promoting agriculture. She created a research paper defending agriculture for her 4-H communication project. Lauren has dedicated a large portion of her young life toward the area of beef production. She has raised her own show cattle and participated at local, state, and national shows. She has been a Director for the Iowa Jr. Angus Association and President of the Hawkeye Jr. Angus Association. She created an awareness of the Jr. Angus LEAD Program that has significantly increased participation. Lauren has received her FFA American Degree, was a member of the County 4-H Council, and named Miss Iowa Angus. $5000 Sigourney Tractor & Implement Agronomy Scholarship Marcie Stevenson Wheatland, IA Parents: Mary & Terry Stevenson As a senior at ISU, Marcie became interested in agronomy and crop production after taking introductory agronomy. She then became involved in the Iowa State Corn Growers Club, and is a member of the Iowa Corn Growers Association Collegiate Advisory Team. She has had a crop scouting internship and traveled to four foreign countries to expand her knowledge of global crop production. Marcie has also been very active in the AGEI Program serving on the AGEI Student Advisory Team, and was Chairman of the Block and Bridle Summer Sausage & Cheese Fund Raising Committee. In 4-H and FFA she raised cattle with particular a interest in carcass contests. After graduation, Lauren plans to pursue a career in international crop production development. $4,000 Bettle Family Scholarship (Robert & Virginia Bettle) Kesley Aarsvold Kasson, MN Parents: Joel & Wendy Aarsvold As a senior at ISU in Animal Science/Pre-Vet, Kesley hopes to be involved in a large and small animal practice in a rural community. With 5 brothers and sisters there is certainly a need for financial support to complete Vet School. In 4-H and FFA, Kesley showed beef, rabbits, poultry, goats, sheep, dogs and cats along with various non animal projects. At Iowa State, Kesley has been very active in the Pre-Vet Club and was the American Pre-Vet Association Co-Chair that will plan a National Symposium. She has also been accepted in Cardinal Key at ISU. Kesley states, Of all the leadership positions, honor societies and other activities in 4-H, FFA and at ISU; the one most meaningful and beneficial was helping younger members succeed. $3,000 Alliant Energy Interstate Power & Light Scholarship Brody Proesch - Clarence, IA Parents: Jay & Michele Proesch Brody was born and raised on a cattle farm. He recently obtained a loan through FSA to purchase 16 cows of his own. In addition to showing steers, heifers and cow calf pairs; he has also shown goats, horses and sheep. He has served as President of the Cedar County 4-H Youth Council the past 2 years. He is also President of the National Honor Society and his high school class. Brody also enjoys volunteer community work particularly Aiming for a Cure that benefits U of I Children s Hospital. He will major in Pre-Vet at ISU and plans to specialize in large animal medicine. Brody states, I want to bring back to my local community the training I will obtain at ISU to further promote agriculture. 9

7 $3,000 Timmins, Kroll & Jacobsen Scholarship Sophie Hansen Adel, IA 10 Parents: Scott & Kit Hansen Sophie has been very active in both 4-H and FFA serving as President of her 4-H Club and FFA Chapter as well as receiving the FFA Outstanding Leadership Award. Sophie states, My goal is to lead by example, work with passion and create great results through team work. Her projects have evolved around breeding heifer and steer projects particularly registered Angus and Simmental. She has shown several champions at the Beef Expo & Iowa State Fair. She plans to always own cattle. Sophie has an interest to help to feed a hungry and growing world. She has donated bundles of beef to needy families in the community. She will enter ISU this fall with a major in Ag Business. $1,000 Timmins, Kroll & Jacobsen Beef Scholarship Nicholas Lauterbach Van Meter, IA Parents: Mike & Carri Lauterbach Growing up in a 300 head cow-calf operation, Nicholas first interest is beef production. He has exhibited cattle at the Iowa State Fair and is a member of the Iowa Junior Beef Breeds Association. He also has a strong interest in swine, exhibiting pigs for the last 5 years, and working in the swine barn at the Iowa State Fair. Active in livestock judging Nicholas won the State 4-H Judging Contest and represented Iowa at the National Contest. A senior at ISU in Animal Science he has been active in Block and Bridle serving on the Cyclone Classic Beef Show Committee. He has also studied abroad in England. Nicholas states, Working with livestock projects and traveling abroad allowed me to grow and learn how to take charge even in stressful situations. $2,500 Boehringer Ingelheim Vetmedica Scholarship Erich Hodges - Ogden, IA Parents: Gregory & Margot Tinner-Hodges As Veterinary Medicine student at ISU, Erich is following his dream since third grade to be a veterinarian. He also has a strong interest in dairy and established his own milking herd. His honors research projects were in dairy dry matter intake and temperature indices related to reproduction. He has served on the ISU University Computational Advisory Committee on the Technology Advancement Committee, as an Ag Peer Mentor, ISU Dairy Tour Leader and received the National Dairy Promotion and Research Board Award. Erich also has an interest in horses and has participated in four ISU Agriculture and Equine Study Abroad Programs. He has also served as a financial liaison for the ISU Equestrian Team. $2,000 IFAA Overall Project Scholarship Abby Smith Adel, IA Parents: R.W. & Cindy Smith Abby s interest in horses started when she attended a hippology class for 4-H members held in her county. At ISU, she has been very active in the Rodeo Club serving on several committees and holding the Marketing Chair Office. She is also active in the Block and Bridle Horse Interest Group. In 4-H, she served on the County, Area and State 4-H Councils. She qualified all four years of her eligibility in four different events for the National Western Roundup. Abby is an Animal Science/Pre-Vet major at ISU with a minor in genetics. Her goal is to preserve the genetics of today s performance horse for the future. Abby states, When people tell me good luck with my career choice, it lights the fire in my determination to attain my goal. $2,000 IFAA Overall Project Scholarship Austin Ehlers Storm Lake, IA Parents: Brent & Carol Ehlers A major in Animal Science/Ag Business, Austin has been very active in a number of activities at ISU including: Grill Masters, Freshman Council, Varieties, Special Olympics, VEISHA, Block and Bridle and Collegiate FFA. He is also a member of the ISU Intercollegiate Meats Judging Team. Austin has a beef herd of 15 cows. He has won both the Iowa 4-H and FFA State Beef Proficiency Awards as well as the state FFA Ag Business CDE and Iowa State Fair Premier Beef Exhibitor Awards. Austin also was National Young Entrepreneur Finalist for his herd management and market beef he raised to sell to consumers. Austin states, I chose Youth Beef Team/MVP experiences to be a political supporter of agriculture.

8 $2,000 IFAA Overall Project Scholarship Natalie Hanson La Porte City, IA Parents: Robert & Maureen Hanson Natalie will major in Biological Systems Engineering at ISU. Natalie states, With my 36 ACT score people wonder why I want to go to ISU; however, I knew what I wanted most was to continue to be involved in the future of agriculture. She has served as a District FFA Officer and on Benton County 4-H Council. She has competed very successfully in many contests including public and extemporaneous speaking and dairy products. Natalie was named FFA Star Over Iowa in Agribusiness. The Iowa State Fair is a tradition in her family. Starting in Kiddie Cattle Kapers and novice showmanship she has exhibited dairy heifers and cows at the Iowa State Fair for eight years. Natalie plans a rewarding career in engineering meat and dairy processing systems used to feed our growing world. $2,000 IFAA Overall Project Scholarship Sarah Striegel What Cheer, IA Parents: Michael & Suzette Striegel Sarah has been extremely successful in FFA competition receiving 1 st place in the state receiving the Livestock Production Proficiency Award, and 1 st place Public Speaking in the state with a speech titled Overcoming World Hunger. She has the Iowa Farmer Degree and traveled to Haiti through the FFA and Global Compassion Network. Sarah has been President of her FFA Chapter and a District FFA Officer. She has raised and shown cattle and sheep for her 4-H and FFA projects. Sarah will be an incoming freshmen at ISU with a major in Ag Education. She states, I see my future as more than just a means to teach young people about the industry I love. I feel responsible for inspiring the next generation to ensure the future of agriculture remains bright. $2,000 IFAA Overall Project Scholarship Amber Hammes Ankeny, IA Parents: Scott & Cindy Hammes Horses and sheep have been Amber s joy for the past 9 years. She not only trained her own horse which has shown very successfully, Amber also volunteered with therapeutic riding lessons for kids with mental and physical disabilities. She has been awarded the County and State 4-H Horse Project Award. In addition to numerous championship and showmanship awards with her sheep, she was awarded the Polk County Sheep Project Award. Amber was Secretary of the first Intermediate 4-H Council in Polk County and served on the County 4-H Council all four years in high school as well as a representative of the County Council on the Polk County Fair Board. Amber states, I have always had a passion for livestock and obtained a great work ethic by being raised in an agricultural atmosphere. She will major in Animal Science at ISU. $2,000 IFAA Overall Project Scholarship James Leonard Newton, IA Parents: Tim & Michele Leonard James has been the President of his FFA Chapter, a District Officer and currently he is State Vice President for the SC District. He has served on County 4-H Council and as youth leader in his 4-H club. His FFA SAE project has been beef production where he feeds out steer and heifers. He has also shown sheep very successfully at the county, state, and national levels. He owns his own flock of ewes and was named the 2 nd Overall Premier 4-H Sheep Exhibitor last year. James has also raised and exhibited swine. He was an attendee at the National FFA Convention and was selected for the Washington Leadership Conference. James served on a church mission to fix houses in West Virginia and has coached youth golf and soccer. He stated, I have learned to think of others and the team before myself. James will major in Ag Business at ISU and hopes to one day return to the farm. 11

9 $2,000 IFAA Overall Project Scholarship Meghan Gray Glenwood, IA Parents: Robert & Colleen Gray Meghan has been an entrepreneur selling eggs from her poultry project and honey from her apiary at the local farmers market. She also has a real love for horses. She has exhibited at the county and state level and earned multiple state awards in Hippology and Quiz Bowl. She represented Iowa in the 2009 National Western Quiz Bowl and now is a coach for the Mills Co. Junior Hippology and Quiz Bowl Teams. As a member of the 4-H County, Regional and now State Councils, she initiated an eight week Clover Kids group with 20 participants to help raise 4-H enrollment in Mills County. To aide in the growth of the Mills County poultry program she assisted a newly formed group of mentally challenged 4-Her s with poultry projects. Meghan will major in Veterinary Science at Iowa Western Community College. $2,000 IFAA Don Greiman Honorary Beef Participation Scholarship Dustin Smith Decorah, IA Parents: Eric & Dainna Smith Dustin will have a double major in Animal Science and Ag Systems Technology at ISU. Dustin states, Following graduation, I hope to join my father on the family farm and incorporate new technologies and ideas from my studies into the farm. Dustin has been very involved in the beef industry. He has served as the Iowa Junior Shorthorn Association President and served on the American Junior Shorthorn Association Board of Directors. He placed 1 st in the Iowa Cattlemen s Beef Extravaganza in Dustin has been active in livestock judging and hopes to continue this passion at ISU. He has been President of his FFA Chapter, a District FFA Vice President, on 4-H County Council, 4-H Youth Committee and 4-H Endowment Committee. He states, I want to make a difference in the lives of young people by educating them on the important role agriculture plays in our everyday life. He has not only shown cattle very successfully, he has won numerous showmanship awards including the Showmanship Buckle at the State Fair. Logan has served on County 4-H Council, National 4-H Council on Youth Leadership and High School Student Council. He was named Cedar County 4-H er of the Year and awarded the Earl Rohlf Memorial Award given to the 4-H er that best exemplifies the true meaning of 4-H in and out of the show ring. Logan s choice of a career in agriculture was an easy choice as each job, project or activity involving agriculture was very rewarding and fulfilling. He hopes to own his own cow herd and raise 4-H club calves. $2,000 Earl Freel Memorial Sheep Participation Scholarship Paige Petzenhauser Roland, IA Parents: Mike & Carole Petzenhauser Paige can t remember a time when she didn t have sheep in her barn at home. She has been showing sheep since age 4 and has earned a number of championships on the county and state levels. Paige has served as President of both her 4-H club and the Roland-Story FFA Chapter. Paige received her Iowa FFA Degree in Paige competed in the 2012 Story County Fair Queen contest and was named Miss Congeniality. She states, I credit so many aspects of my personality and my character to 4-H and FFA. I hope all this influence reflects through my words and actions. Paige will attend ISU this fall with an open optional major in agriculture. 12

10 $2,000 IFAA Excellence In Swine Participation Scholarship Johnathan Triggs Mount Ayr, IA Parents: Kevin & Kathy Triggs Johnathan hails from a 92 year old family farm that specializes in swine production. He has shown swine at the county and state levels. He states, I started working with pigs since I could walk, and have developed a huge passion for the swine industry. He has competed in numerous FFA related competitions, and led many discussion groups and seminars related to swine. Johnathan has donated over 5,000 volunteer hours to his community. He has served as his FFA Chapter President and served on the County 4-H Council. Johnathan will attend ISU to major in Animal Science. Johnathan plans to specialize in swine nutrition and become a leader in the swine production field. $1,500 Swine Industry Scholarship Ashley Smeby Klemme, IA Parents: Todd & Tracy Smeby Ashley grew up around a nursery and finisher swine operation in Hancock County, and thoroughly enjoys swine production. Through her swine projects and showing at the Iowa State Fair, she has learned about money management, responsibility and showmanship. A member of the State 4-H Council, Ashley was the Co-Chair of the State 4-H Conference in She has also been on the Hancock County Advisory Committee, Secretary of her FFA Chapter, and the Family Community Career Leader of America. Ashley also was a Delegate to National 4-H Congress and selected to sing at the National Hall of Fame Ceremony. Ashley will attend ISU to major in Agricultural Business. $1,500 Iowa Purebred Swine Council Scholarship Austin Lane Spragueville, IA Parents: Ken & Karen Lane Austin grew up in Jackson County as an active 4-H and FFA member, holding several officer positions. He has raised hogs since age 4 and purchased two purebred Berkshire gilts at the age of 13. In FFA, he earned both his Iowa and American FFA degrees. He was also the Iowa FFA Swine Entrepreneur Proficiency Award winner. At ISU he has been active in Block and Bridle serving on the Spring Market Hog Show and Spring Prospect Sale Committees and was Co-Chair of the 2012 Little North American Showmanship Committee. He is currently an Animal Science major at ISU and hopes to stay involved in the swine industry with his family s farrow to finish operation following graduation. $1,500 Iowa Purebred Swine Council Scholarship Brett Lilienthal Durant, IA Parents: Bob & Taci Lilienthal A Scott County native, Brett has been involved in all aspects of swine production. His family owns a wean-to-finish operation in eastern Iowa. Brett also is involved in 4-H, FFA and played three sports at Durant High School. Brett has showed swine at the county and state levels. Brett was active in livestock judging and was a member of the Iowa team at the National Western Stock Show. He also had a leadership role in the Wilton FFA Ag Farm as it became more successful in the production and showing of its animals. He and his brother have also recently founded Birds Eye Imagery, which is a crop scouting company. Brett will attend ISU this fall and major in Ag Studies. $1,500 Zoetis Animal Health Swine Scholarship Sterling Schnepf Granville, IA Parents: Richard & Sharon Schnepf A student at ISU in Animal Science, Sterling has had a passion for animal agriculture and was a 9 year Sioux County 4-H member. In 4-H she served on the State 4-H Council for two years and County 4-H Council. She states, Each year in 4-H I looked forward to helping junior members with their projects and emphasizing how important the organization was. Sterling has served as the Iowa Pork Princess and connected with consumers and producers across Iowa. He presently makes the majority of genetic decisions for his family s swine herd. He is a former 4-H Club President and former Keota FFA Chapter President. As an Animal Science major at ISU, he works part-time at the Iowa State College of Veterinary Medicine. Matthew has been an officer of Block and Bridle, an Ambassador for the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences and a Mentor for the Animal Science Department. He looks forward to a future as a large animal veterinarian and continuing to raise and sell show pigs. $1,000 Iowa Pork Producers Scholarship Mariah Schmitt Fort Atkinson, IA Parents: Carl & Terry Schmitt Winneshiek County 4-Her Mariah Schmitt is heading to ISU to double major in Public Service and Administration and Animal Science this fall. Her primary interest has been swine and goats. After college, she plans to own a swine operation specializing in Berkshire hogs and hopes to market farm fresh pork to local restaurants, grocery stores and consumers. She was a State Champion in both the 4-H and FFA Dairy Judging Contest, and represented the United States at the Royal Highland Show in Scotland. Mariah was also the Winneshiek County 4-H Senior Council President. In high school, she spent over 300 hours promoting agriculture in Winneshiek County. Mariah was the first Turkey Valley student to earn her Iowa FFA Degree. $1,000 Lauren Christian Memorial Swine Scholarship Jordan Bjustrom Clarksville, IA Parents: Dave & Shari Bjustrom Jordan is passionate about the swine industry, having raised and shown pigs for over a decade. Active in both 4-H and FFA, Jordan was the Kossuth County Pork Queen and the Kossuth County Fair Queen. In FFA, Jordan earned the State Gold Proficiency Award in Swine Entrepreneurship, as well as several swine awards in 4-H. She served as the Ag Club President at Hawkeye Community College. At ISU, she has been active in the Block and Bridle Club and Swine Interest Group. She has completed an internship with Pioneer. Pork Industry Scholarship Sawyer Hrdlicka Rock Rapids, IA Parents: Jeff & Danielle Hrdlicka A graduate of Central Lyon High School, Sawyer has been involved in his family s sow operation in northwest Iowa and also exhibits swine and beef at the Lyon County Fair. Sawyer has won one FFA Diversified Crop Production and two Diversified Production Proficiency Awards. He likes teaching younger kids, the future leaders of said programs, what he has learned from his project and leadership involvement. In 4-H, Sawyer just completed his term as Lyon County 4-H Council President. She states, My swine and floriculture interests allow me to be involved in and explore agriculture diversity. In FFA, Bay was a member of State Champion teams in Dairy Foods, Meat Evaluation and Agriculture Sales Contest. She was the Swine Premier Exhibitor at the 2012 National Western Stock Show. Bay just returned from an 18 day trip to Ethiopia, where she studied both culture and agricultural practices. At ISU, Bay is an active part of the Ag Business Club, Block and Bridle and Sigma Alpha. A graduate of Hampton-Dumont High School, Ellen has a small cow herd and enjoys showing cattle at the Franklin County Fair and the Iowa State Fair. She served as Franklin County Fair Queen. Ellen spent her junior year of high school in Germany and came to understand the importance of agriculture on a global basis. Ellen has been involved in both 4-H and FFA, and appreciated the leadership opportunities in both organizations. He showed successfully at state and national shows including the North American International Livestock Exhibition and National Jr. Chianina Show. As a student at ISU, in Agricultural Systems Technology, Ty is employed parttime at the ISU Beef Teaching Farm and interned at the ISU McNay Research and Demonstration Farm. He is presently a summer intern in quality assurance for Tyson Foods. At ISU, Ty enjoys staying active with the Block and Bridle Club serving as Vice President of the Beef Interest Group and Co-Chair of the 2013 Cyclone Classic. $1,000 Schlutz Family Beef Breeding Scholarship Paul Pisarik Solon, IA Parents: Mark & Luann Pisarik Paul is a three year member of the Johnson County 4-H Council, served as his 4-H club President, Junior Leader and on the State 4-H Council. Paul has received awards in Citizenship, Leadership, Communication, Beef, Food and Nutrition, Photography and Woodworking. Headed to Kirkwood Community College, Paul will major in Ag and Beef Production. He raises Simmentals, and says calving is his favorite time of the year. With his own herd, Andrew has learned to market, breed and care for cattle. He has participated successfully at the Iowa State Fair, Ak-Sar-Ben and National Western Stock Show. Andrew served as FFA Chapter President, attended the Washington Leadership Conference and earned his Iowa FFA Degree. She is the current President of the Junior American Maine Anjou Association, also having led the Iowa Junior Beef Breeds Association for two years. She is a former President of the Pleasantville FFA Chapter. Growing up on a diversified Johnson County family farm, Courtney has always enjoyed being outside and working with her father and grandfather to manage the family s cowcalf herd. Courtney is responsible for the breeding decisions, AI sires and manages the herd health aspects. At ISU Courtney has been active in Alpha Gamma Delta, Homecoming, Greek Week, Block and Bridle, and Dance Marathon. She has interned with the Iowa State University Extension as a 4-H Assistant. An entrepreneur at heart, Courtney is working on a business plan for a Black Tie Barn reception hall and event center. $500 Dick Frye Memorial Scholarship Joni Erwin Crawfordsville, IA Parents: David & Tammy Erwin A graduate of Washington High School in southeast Iowa, Joni has her own cattle herd on her family s farm. Each year, she keeps and breeds heifers and cows, then shows, sells or raises their offspring. Her herd has helped her save money for college at ISU. She has been active in 4-H and FFA, served on the Washington County 4-H Council and as an officer in both 4-H and FFA. She has been an IJBBA exhibitor, served on Planning Committee for the Washington County Cattle Show, and taught younger showman in the programs. She was awarded the Iowa State Fair Beef Showmanship Award. Following college graduation, she plans to pursue a career in agricultural sales related to the cattle industry. $1,200 Iowa John Deere Dealers Scholarship Patrick Frank Keota, IA Parents: Robert & Tina Frank Patrick has raised and shown his own cattle and pigs for over 10 years through both 4-H and FFA. He likes challenges and enjoys learning. He served as president of the Keokuk County Youth Council for two years and served as Secretary of his local FFA chapter. He is currently an Animal Science/Pre-Vet major at ISU. His long term career goal is to be a large animal veterinarian. He was elected the Vice President of the ISU Block and Bridle Club, served as Co-Chair of the Grill Team, and on the Little North American Committee. Building Scholarship Heidi Andresen De Witt, IA Parents: Darwin & Mary Andresen With a passion for equine, Heidi began her career by riding and showing horses in eastern Iowa. She expanded her operation when she entered high school and began training horses for others in the community. She now judges several horse shows, and will receive her official judging card this fall. Heidi completed a year as a State FFA Vice President for the Southeast District, and previously served as the Southeast District FFA Secretary. Heidi also was active in horse judging competing at the National FFA Contest, Quarter Horse Congress and the National Western Stock Show. She won the 2013 State Proficiency Award in Equine Entrepreneurship. She is majoring in Agricultural Education at ISU. $1,000 Dean & Adele Bowden Scholarship Megan Collison Rockwell City, IA Parents: Tim & Lori Collison A recent graduate of South Central Calhoun, Megan founded her purebred Angus cow herd at the age of 9 and has been involved in beef production ever since. She has exhibited her cattle at the local, state and national levels. Through use of AI and embryo transfer she improved her genetics and has successfully marketed heifers, bulls and embryos throughout the industry. She also is involved in breeding, raising and showing sheep. Megan was an FFA Star Finalist in the Agri-Science Division, and participated in livestock and soil judging. She is preparing to attend ISU in Animal Science, with a career goal of being a veterinarian like her father. $1,000 Theisen Supply Inc. Scholarship Richard Nichols Atlantic, IA Parents: Bill & Linda Nichols A native of Cass County, Richard was an active 4-H and FFA member, holding club and chapter offices and earning his Iowa FFA Degree. With a primary interest in beef production, Richard spent a summer internship with Cargill, Inc. at a Dodge City, Kansas beef packing plant and just completed an internship with Profit-Trac Agronomic Solutions. He enjoys raising, showing and fitting cattle. He is a current member of the ISU Livestock Judging Team and has been active in Block and Bridle and leadership teams of Campus Ministries. Richard is majoring in Animal Science with a minor in Agronomy. He states, Agriculture is the only viable option to feed the world and I know I want to be a part of that. $1,500 Brice Leonard Memorial Sheep Scholarship Tyler Leete Elk Horn, IA Parents: Randy & Rhea Leete Tyler Leete got started in the sheep industry as a young Shelby County 4-Her, and has steadily increased his involvement both inside and outside of the show ring as part of both 4-H and FFA over the past decade. A 4-H project of making custom sheep halters led to a hobby business that keeps Tyler busy and involved. He has donated sheep halters to many show lamb camps, county fairs and jackpot shows. Tyler conducted a show lamb camp for two years, and volunteers as a sheep show ring lead at the Shelby County Fair, the Iowa State Fair 4-H Show and Ak-Sar-Ben to name a few shows. Tyler is studying Animal Science at ISU, and is involved with Block and Bridle including Co-Chair of the Lamb Show Committee, on the Block and Bridle Grill Team and Summer Sausage and Cheese Sales Teams. 15 $1,500 Bart Nelson Memorial Sheep Scholarship Riley Wattonville Huxley, IA Parents: Jason & Linda Wattonville; Sara Wattonville Sheep have always been part of Riley s life. He has enjoyed the project as part of both 4-H and his involvement in the Collins Maxwell FFA Chapter. Riley also enjoys livestock judging receiving the top sheep judging award and top 10 overall in the State FFA Contest. The Story County resident served as class President for three years, as a chapter FFA officer, and was elected to the Student Council. Riley works part time for the Iowa Genetic Technology Center, a boar stud in central Iowa. He received high gold awards at the State FFA Contest in Agriculture Issues and Farm Business Management. Riley has a passion for agriculture, and will attend ISU this fall to study Animal Science. His long term plans include graduate school. $500 Iowa All Breeds Sheep Council Scholarship Jared Wellik Woden, IA Parents: James & Carla Wellik Jared is looking toward a career in the livestock industry and farming, so he can give back to an industry that has helped him grow in so many ways. He took over his family s Hancock County sheep operation in 6 th grade, gradually buying ewes and now owns a flock of 13 ewes. He has shown swine and steers in addition to sheep. He also farms 15 acres of crops in a corn and soybean rotation and says, There is nothing I enjoy more than farming. Jared has been involved in both 4-H and FFA, earning the Iowa FFA Degree serving on County 4-H Council, Vice President of the 4-H Advisory Committee, Vice President of his FFA Chapter and earned the Chapter Star Farmer Award. He is headed to ISU to major in Agricultural Studies. $1,000 Iowa Poultry Association Scholarship Andrew Whitaker Hillsboro, IA Parents: Carl & Norma Whitaker From his early days as a youth, Andrew raised chickens and now also sells farm fresh eggs to local customers as part of his small business in Van Buren County. He has served as President of his 4-H Club, FFA Chapter and the National Honor Society. Andrew also found time to raise swine, cattle and goats. Andrew is Treasurer of Van Buren Youth Council and has completed 16 different project areas in 4-H. He has served as a mentor to younger members and is a member of the Silver Card Program with 200+ hours of community service. He attended the Iowa Ag Youth Institute Leadership Conference and the Citizen Washington Focus Trip. Andrew is headed to ISU to major in Agricultural Engineering. $500 Iowa Meat Goat Association Scholarship Landon Sexton Titonka, IA Parents: Larry & Rhonda Sexton With a strong interest in boer goat production, Landon started with a herd of three boer goats and increased to over 50 goats through good breeding, nutrition and herd management. He is active in both 4-H and FFA and also works parttime for Pioneer. He completed a term as 4-H Club President and encouraged member participation and mentored several young 4-H members. He has also been active in livestock and soil judging. Landon graduated from Algona High School and is headed to ISU to major in Agricultural Systems Technology. Erin majors in Agricultural Business at ISU. $2,000 Mark Pearson 4-H/IFAA Foundation Memorial Scholarship Ryan Skaar Story City, IA Parents: Brad & Julie Skaar Ryan is planning to attend ISU to study Agriculture and Biochemistry. Ryan s interest in learning how the application of microbiology and biochemistry are cohesive to his interest in raising cattle and sheep for food production. From mission trips to Spain, winning the FFA State Fair Hampshire show, participating in the World Food Prize Symposium, to being named the Mid-Iowa Player of the year in 2012; Ryan clearly has an enthusiasm for all aspects of life, leadership and agriculture. Ryan has received other honors such as being the 4H and FFA Chapter President and earning his Iowa FFA degree. He was on the Story City Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors where he helped lead community development projects $1,000 Hy-Vee/4-H/IFAA Foundation Scholarship Karly Biddle Walcott, IA Parents: Dennis & Tena Biddle Karly has been actively showing Hereford cattle since she was five years old, starting with a bucket calf and growing to a herd of 30+ registered Herefords. Karly has become involved in the genetic aspect of building a herd by learning how to properly artificially inseminate cattle and take part in the registration process. Karly currently holds the title, Iowa Hereford Queen, a title she earned being a part of the Iowa Junior Hereford Association and the National Junior Hereford Association for ten years. She has also been active in 4-H acting as the President and serving on the County 4-H Council. Karly is planning to attend Ellsworth Community College to study Animal Science. Karly states that, Growing up on a farm is by far the best experience anyone can have. It instills in you hard work, responsibility and determination. $1,000 Hy-Vee/4-H/IFAA Foundation Scholarship Nicklaus Boehm Elgin, IA Parents: Marcus & Angela Boehm Nicklaus has been showing cattle for eight years and has won the Credit and Finance Division at the Iowa Beef Extravaganza. He also competed in livestock judging contests and swine showmanship. Nicklaus is the youth representative for the Clayton County Extension Youth Council, and also earned a scholarship to attend the National FFA s Washington Leadership Conference in Washington D.C.. Among his many accolades, Nicklaus has served on the County 4-H Council, earned his Iowa FFA degree as a junior and has served as a President in both the FFA Chapter and 4-H club. Nicklaus plans to attend ISU to study Agronomy, so he can one day become an agronomist. Nicklaus goal is, to be involved in as much as I can, to be a positive leader and enjoy what I do. 19

17 $1,000 Hy-Vee/4-H/IFAA Foundation Scholarship Hayley Folkerts Waverly, IA Parents: Neil & Connie Folkerts Hayley has been raising Belted Galloway beef cattle since she was a young girl, and she enjoys answering the many questions pertaining to the uniqueness of this particular breed of cattle. Currently, Hayley is the Bremer County Beef Queen and is proud to represent the Bremer County Cattlemen. Hayley s main interest lies in animal genetics and specifically the artificial insemination process. She has been active in both FFA and 4-H where she has held leadership positions and competed in contests such as Conduct of Meetings, Parliamentary Procedure, livestock judging and meats judging. One accomplishment that Hayley is most proud of is winning the Reserve Champion Cow/Calf at the Bremer Country Fair in Hayley plans to attend ISU to study Animal Science with an emphasis in genetics. Michael Foltz Lineville, IA Parents: Michael & Jennifer Foltz Michael is planning to attend ISU to study Agricultural Communications. Growing up, Michael has had an interest in broadcasting, and in FFA he was involved in the Agricultural Broadcasting Career Development Event. He has also been involved in the Radio News Event for Iowa Speech. Michael has had the opportunity to hold officer positions in his TSA club, FFA chapter and 4-H club. He has participated as an Iowa FFA Grandstand Usher and served on many committees for his chapter such as the open swine show, truck and tractor pull, and the open calf show. He has exhibited cattle, horses, swine, and photography. One thing Michael values and demonstrates is the importance of community service and he does so by helping younger members show at the county fair. Madison Harken Pleasantville, IA Parents: Brian & Shannon Harken Madison plans to attend ISU and pursue a degree in Agriculture and Life Sciences Education-Communications Option. Madison has enjoyed being around livestock on her family farm. She especially enjoys showing swine. In 2011, she was awarded the Reserve Champion 4-H Market Hog at the Iowa State Fair. Madison s history of accomplishment extended into the classroom as well, where she was a member of the National Honor Society, Gold Honor Roll, and an Academic All-Conference award winner in basketball. Madison has held leadership roles in both 4-H (President) and FFA (Secretary). Her experience in these organizations has given her a great sense of pride and taught her valuable skills she plans to count on for future success. Kaitlin Ihns Wilton, IA Parents: Steve & Jill Ihns Kaitlin is looking forward to attending ISU where she plans to study Ag Business and Event Management. Kaitlin has been showing cattle ever since she joined 4-H. She also enjoys helping her parents and grandparents with their grain farms. Kaitlin shows a strong work ethic in the classroom, evident by being on the honor roll throughout high school. She has also been taking college credit to help prepare her for her studies at ISU. Kaitlin has held many leadership roles in 4-H such as President, Vice-President, and Treasurer. In her leadership roles, she has organized many community projects and events. Kaitlin plans to use her leadership skills along with her continued education to better help her community and agricultural industry overall. 20

18 Ashlyn Kessler Walcott, IA Parents: Jim & Ann Kessler Ashlyn is looking forward to attending ISU and studying Agronomy. Over the nine years that Ashlyn has been involved with 4-H, she has shown cattle at local, county, and state fairs. As an agronomist Ashlyn hopes to develop better seeds that will provide higher yields to help feed our world s growing population. Ashlyn has found success in the show ring with her cattle. She takes great pride in being able to take her family grain and use it to help produce cattle that not only show well but turn a profit at market. She has served as President of her 4-H club and on County Council. Ashlyn looks forward to using the experience she has gained through 4-H to help others and succeed in her future agricultural endeavors. Katelyn Koberg Durant, IA Parents: Korey & Jennifer Koberg Katelyn has been actively involved in the cattle industry since she was fourteen and started her own cattle herd. In 2012, Katelyn became the Scott County Beef Queen and also decided to participate on the Scott County Judging team to understand more about livestock production. Katelyn has been on the honor roll all four years of high school and served as the Secretary, Vice President and President of her 4-H club and the President of the Durant National Honor Society. She has been Chairman of several committees including Fundraising, Activities and Toys for Tots. Katelyn is thankful for all that FFA and 4-H has taught her and helping her accomplish her goals. Katelyn plans to attend ISU to attain a degree in Agricultural Business. Jake Lilienthal New Liberty, IA Parents: Mike & Stephanie Lilienthal Jake will be attending ISU to study Agronomy. For the past three years Jake has been a part of the Wilton s FFA Soil Judging Team, where last fall he placed sixth overall at the district contest. Jake was also a member of the 2011 Livestock Judging Team that represented Iowa at the National Western Stock Show, and placed fourth as a Swine Premier Exhibitor in Jake has held many leadership roles like, captain of the track team, senior class Vice-President, and a mentor to younger 4-H members. He helps younger kids understand the importance of agriculture and where their food comes from. Jake states, I am always eager to share what I ve learned with others. Chase Maxwell Moscow, IA Parents: Brett & Lynn Maxwell Chase works full time for Herring farms, a job he took in hopes to learn more about crop production, from driving a grain cart to running a detasseling machine on 1,500 acres of seed corn. Chase has showed sheep at the county, state and national level, and has won the Northern Plains Club Lamb All-Around Award. He has also won the Grand Champion 4-H Commercial Ewe at the Iowa State Fair, twice. Chase states, Living on a farm in Iowa and raising livestock has taught me the value of patience, generosity, hard work, responsibility and financial accountability. He has been actively involved in 4-H and FFA including being a founder/organizer of the Wilton FFA Trap Team. Chase is headed to ISU to obtain a degree in Agronomy. 21

19 Kristin McConnaha Moscow, IA 22 Parents: Ron & Jodi McConnaha Kristin has an extensive background in 4-H and FFA, purchasing and raising her own livestock. She has a small cowcalf herd, in which she has purchased females over the years to show and then add to the herd. She has also been active in showing swine. Kristin is competitive in livestock judging, competing at Iowa Beef Expo, Iowa State University, Eastern Iowa Angus Sale, and local contests. She has also attended the Iowa State University Livestock Judging camp. Kristin sees many benefits in livestock judging, stating I have expanded my knowledge about EPDs from livestock judging which has helped me pick out my own herd bull. Kristin will major in Ag Business at ISU, and hopes to work in the feed business after graduation. Mallory McDonald Elkhart, IA Parents: Chad & Marilee McDonald Mallory has been active in both 4-H and FFA, growing up on a farm with horses, cattle, sheep and hogs. She has a strong interest in science and medicine and plans on majoring in Biology/Pre-Veterinary Medicine at ISU. While she has exhibited swine and sheep, her main interest is in equine. Mallory raises and breeds Pony of America s and enjoys training and showing them. Her 15 year old mare had a filly in the spring of She also has a 5 year old P.O.A that she exhibits at the Polk County Fair and other local horse shows. Mallory has received the Star Farmer Award and been a 4-H Horse Project Leader. She has placed strong emphasis on her education, and she says, I want a career that will better the lives of animals and the people in my community. Rebecca Ness Muscatine, IA Parents: Troy & Denise Ness Rebecca plans on double majoring in Agrcultural Business and Accounting at ISU. She states, I was Treasurer for the Muscatine FFA where I managed all funds; inspiring my interest to pursue a career in this field. Other than being Treasurer, Rebecca has been involved in numerous other FFA and 4-H activities including holding the offices of Vice President, Historian, and Reporter. She has participated in dog and horse projects, and has been active in livestock judging. She was a member of the 2011 National FFA Equine Evaluation Winning Team and 5 th place team at the National Western Stock Show. Alec Ornduff Ainsworth, IA Parents: Kevin & Carrie Ornduff Alec plans on majoring in Agriculture at Kirkwood Community College, and hopes to one day farm alongside his dad, eventually taking over the family farm. He wants to integrate new technologies into the family operation, while still learning from his dad and grandfather. He says, With the advancements in technology, I realize the need for further education and experience before coming back to our operation. I hope to manage our family farm business as successfully as my ancestors have and be able to pass the farm down to my children. He is a member of Washington County 4-H, raising cattle and sheep, and receiving many awards for his projects. He has also served as an officer in his 4-H club for the last 6 years. Trent Pease Colfax, IA Parents: Brian & Danette Pease Trent comes from a beef cow-calf operation, and his 4-H heifers from over the years are a part of the herd. He currently serves as President for both his 4-H club and FFA chapter. He has received the FFA Star Farmer and Iowa Degree. He has a passion for the beef industry, being involved in not only the family farm, 4-H, and FFA but also the Limousin, Chianina, Maine Anjou, and Simmental Associations. Trent hopes to continue to farm one day, stating that he has a strong interest in traveling the Midwest learning about other farming techniques and operations. He plans on attending ISU in the fall, majoring in Agricultural Studies.

20 Megan Pretz Columbus Junction, IA Parents: Mike & Dayle Pretz Megan grew up on her family s cattle farm, and has shown at local and state shows for the past 9 years. She is a member of the Louisa County Beef Committee and completed an SAE in Placement Beef Production. Along with showing, Megan has participated in Food For America through FFA, placed 2 nd a the Iowa State Leadership Conference in Ag Issues and Perceptions, and received her Iowa Degree through FFA. She currently serves as President of both her FFA chapter and her 4-H club. Megan places high emphasis on her academic career, and has considered becoming an Ag teacher, by doing so she says it would allow me to pass on my passion of agriculture to future students. Megan plans to attend ISU in the fall majoring in Agricultural Education, Agricultural Business or Animal Science. Paige Saunders Manilla, IA Parents: Jon & Jill Saunders Paige has been active in 4-H and FFA raising and showing both cattle and sheep. Over the years, Paige has bought and shown cattle, keeping the heifers to begin her own cow herd. Paige states, Each year, I either show one of the offspring from my cows as my livestock project, or sell the calves to create income to purchase a 4-H or FFA project. While Paige enjoys showing, she has also been involved in Meat Judging, Soil Judging, Livestock Judging, and a Veterinary Science team. She has served as President, Treasurer, Secretary, and Historian of her 4-H club, and President of her FFA chapter. Paige plans on attending ISU in the fall with a major in Agricultural Studies. Megen Studer Corwith, IA Parents: Paul & Roxanne Studer Megen got her start in 4-H on her family s livestock farm where they raise sheep. When she was young, she often helped raise the orphan/bottle lambs, eventually using these skills to raise lambs for showing at the county, district, and state level. Megen has enjoyed learning how to feed, vaccinate, and care for the flock with her family. She says, I have kept records on ewes, lambs born and which sire was used, and how much feed intake it took to get our lambs to market weight. While being active in 4-H, she has served as her chapters Treasurer, Secretary, and has been President of her chapter for the past six years. Megen plans on becoming a Veterinary Technician. She will attend Iowa Lakes Community College this fall. Tim Thalacker Baxter, IA Parents: John & Michele Thalacker Tim s drive to be involved in agriculture has grown immensely with his experience working on a cattle and swine operation. In addition to the farm operations experience, he also had the chance to raise show stock, showing at the local and state levels, including World Pork Expo. Participating in FFA, he has had a chance to attend the FFA Convention, received his Green Hand, Chapter, and Iowa Degrees, and the Swine Proficiency Award. Tim is also a member of the National Junior Swine Association. Tim plans to attend ISU in the fall to major in Ag Business, stating, I enjoy the hard work required to maintain daily operations, and I am very interested in learning more about the industry, and the strategic side of the operation and what it takes to be a successful and sustainable operation. 23
