2 DEAR PRME, Thank you for the opportunity to present our PRME report. With this year s report we aim to take stock of our latest achievements, realizations and efforts in order to show our continuous commitment toward providing first-class business education while remaining socially responsible. At EU we take passion very seriously. We would like to share with you some of the things that we are passionate about and what makes us the business school we are today. We are passionate about our students. Our business school exists for our students and we pride ourselves on having such an international and culturally diverse student community. Students are the leaders of tomorrow. Therefore, beyond our academic curriculum, we also give them all the opportunities we can, through industrial visits, study tours and guest speakers, to meet, learn and network with successful leaders of the business world. We are passionate about alumni. Our alumni are a testament to the education and experience we offer at EU and their success exemplifies what we stand for as an educational institution. We know we can reach further together than alone. The Alumni Association was brought to life for this reason; to provide a platform for discovering new opportunities, exploring career paths and cultivating connections. We are passionate about entrepreneurship. We thrive on entrepreneurial spirit and use it as a driving force to continuously achieve more. We not only educate our students but also demonstrate an entrepreneurial mindset: we launched our online education platform e-learning tool as an answer to the ever-growing worldwide trend of lifelong learning, which knows no space or limits. We are passionate about professionalism. We instill the importance of professionalism in our students, staff and faculty. Our lecturers and staff are highly qualified and experienced business professionals who help our students to gain these same qualities for their future careers. We are passionate about environmental and social responsibility. We have one planet. Our obligation is to protect it and to appreciate its value. All business innovations and inventions are in vain if we do not have people to share them with and environments to share them in. During their studies, we help our students to develop a socially responsible mindset, which makes them both conscientious and successful leaders of the business world. This report shows how we transform our passion from words into actions. It demonstrates the steps we have made and continue to make to be a socially responsible institution while providing our students with the best quality and up-to-date education. We are accredited and our activities are constantly reviewed by prestigious accreditation bodies: ACBSP The Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP) is a specialized accreditation association for business education that rewards teaching excellence. ACBSP members are selected for their quality of education and alumni success rate as well as a proven dedication to research and innovation. Programs on all four EU campuses have this accreditation. IACBE The International Assembly for Collegiate Business Education (IACBE) is the leading outcomes-based professional accrediting organization for business programs in student-centered colleges and universities throughout the world. Programs on both the Geneva and Montreux campuses are accredited by IACBE for their excellence in business education. OUTSTANDING FACULTY MEMBERS who in addition to having excellent academic credentials are also entrepreneurs, consultants and business leaders. All courses are taught by highly-qualified faculty members with a wealth of practical experience in their fields. Lecturers work with students on an individual basis to create an interactive learning environment. The caliber of the faculty and a culture that values and rewards an entrepreneurial spirit are what make a business school stand out. 8

9 INTERNATIONAL student and faculty bodies comprised of more than 100 nationalities, with 98% of them speaking more than two languages. The business world is growing at a rapid pace. Multinational corporations are opening offices all over the world. A multilingual and international study environment gives students an opportunity to gain exposure that will help them in communicating with people from different backgrounds throughout their careers. SMALL CLASS SIZES AND REGULAR EVALUATIONS which numerous studies demonstrate have a direct relationship with increased academic achievement. We average a 1:9 lecturer-student ratio. Students benefit from more personal interaction with lecturers and course mates. Constant feedback allows them to know where they stand and there is an open two-way communication path between students and lecturers at all times. THE PRAGMATIC APPROACH TO EXPERIENTIAL BUSINESS LEARNING employs the dynamic case-study method; one of the most effective tools to teach applications of business theory, as well as webbased business simulation games, which are fast becoming accepted as an exceptionally effective teaching method. Students learn from faculty members and also from fellow students who come from different cultures. This approach is proven to effectively prepare students for leadership positions in the market. ALL EU CLASSES ARE TAUGHT IN ENGLISH as all the students who study here are proficient English speakers. Assignments, exams, lectures and dissertations are also all in English. We realize it is a critical language for developing a successful international career. Students graduate with a solid understanding of business and the communication skills necessary to succeed in it. EXCELLENT EMPLOYMENT RECORD as most students have been employed, placed in an internship or accepted into a graduate study program within six months of graduation. The Career Services Department provides personalized counseling, assistance and information to all students. They are advised on their CVs, assisted with interview preparations and informed about a variety of networking opportunities. DEVELOPING BUSINESS PERSONALITIES is one of the most important non-academic advantages of studying at EU. Academic knowledge is a necessary base when entering the business world, but students must have an individual perspective to succeed in the market. EU develops strong business personalities by encouraging students to build up the most valuable brand they can sell: themselves. 9

10 02 PRINCIPLES 1&2 CURRICULUM CHANGE We know that our everchanging global world is getting smaller and smaller. Therefore, we are constantly improving and updating our curricula and academic activities to be able to build a real global network of possibilities and development for our students and alumni, incorporating the values of social responsibility. PARTNERSHIP: A GLOBAL OUTLOOK EU partners with other prestigious institutions around the world in order to offer students further study opportunities on campus and give them the best start in the working world. We have carefully selected our affiliate institutions to offer students a varied spectrum of opportunities across the globe. Through our partners in Europe, Asia, Africa and the Americas, students gain further international perspective by studying various curricula and taking part in international exchanges. All of our partners are respected, accredited institutions with a long-standing history of educating business professionals who later go on to become leaders in their chosen fields. EU continuously explores affiliation opportunities with world-class universities. We offer our students the possibility to participate in exchange programs and obtain further qualifications from educational institutions around the world. In the past two years we have developed partnerships with several institutions to provide our students with the possibility of a global learning experience. Pace University The cooperation with Pace University was established to provide real international experience. Students have the opportunity to spend two semesters in New York City at Pace University s Lublin School of Business after completing five semesters at any EU campus. Upon the successful completion of two semesters at Pace University, students graduate with two qualifications, from two individual academic institutions, on two continents. This gives participants a competitive edge in our ever more globalized world and offers students an international cross-cultural educational experience. University of Roehampton This cooperation is available to EU Barcelona and EU Switzerland at the BA and MBA levels. It allows students to graduate with two internationally-accredited business degrees from leading academic institutions. University of Derby Upon completion of the program, students receive a U.K. state-recognized Bachelor of Arts (Hons) degree from the University of Derby. Shinawatra International University The double degree with Shinawatra International University (SIU) gives EU students the chance to complete the seventh and eighth semesters of their bachelor s program at SIU in Thailand. EU gives students the chance to discover varied global cultures, including those in and around the booming economies of Southeast Asia. University of California, Riverside After completing five semesters at EU, undergraduate students are eligible to spend a year at the University of California, Riverside and gain a postgraduate diploma in either business management; tourism and hospitality management; entertainment and media management; public policy and international relations; or sports management. Upon graduation, they are guaranteed the exceptional opportunity of a fully-paid internship. 10

11 CONTINUED SUPPORT At EU we aim to transform our students academic experience and inspire their business vision. Therefore, we feel responsible for our students throughout their full academic journey at EU Business School and provide them with full continuous support: Settling in: Our Admission Department and an oncampus Accommodation Officer help and advise students on accommodation and residency issues, to make the initial steps of their studies smoother. Throughout the academic journey: EU Business School s Career Services Department (CSD) focuses on meeting the needs of our students and alumni, as well as helping recruiters identify talent. We are actively engaged in employer outreach, providing students with a wide variety of career opportunities. The EU Career Services Department arranges counseling sessions, discussions, career fairs and presentations by industry experts. The CSD supports student career advancement through: counseling and mentoring career workshops industry insight panels career fairs company presentations procurement of internships and job opportunities EU Career and Educational Fair: We are delighted to say that the 2015 EU Career and Educational Fair was a huge success. We proudly participate in bringing together employers, headhunters and future talented professionals to facilitate our students first steps in the business world. We also invited talented alumni members, who could share their experience with our students and also explore what they can do together. MBA alumnus Steve Rynecki, Economic Growth Officer at the U.S. Agency for International Development, was in attendance. He told us: Success for me is getting up every morning energized and excited about the day ahead and all of its challenges. We believe it s crucial that students are aware of the many options open to them once they graduate. We are also thrilled to welcome various members of our alumni, which just goes to show that although all students will eventually leave EU, they ll always be a part of our family. Our current network of alumni is 25,000 members strong and spans the globe. Former students have gone on to work and enjoy success in numerous fields within the world of business, many of them holding high positions in international corporations, ever-expanding SMEs and pioneering start-ups. To create a bridge between former students around the world, we continue to place emphasis on our Alumni Association website. The association connects both former and current EU students, facilitating communication between alumni and encouraging interaction, discussion and collaboration. The website is an online portal through which alumni can get in touch with EU s Alumni Relations Office and find out about upcoming alumni events. We are proud of our alumni achieving great things. We encourage them to maintain the critical thinking, the socially responsible business attitude and the thirst for achieving new heights after graduation into the business world. As our alumna Lena Woodward, Senior Community Associate at the World Economic Forum has also commented: Convey confidence and competence. Your work attitude is felt by everyone you do business with. Your attitude, not your aptitude, will determine your altitude. INSPIRING FUTURE LEADERS Inspiring minds have a strong motivating power. They encourage us to believe in ourselves and take obstacles as challenges from which we can learn and grow. At EU Business School we frequently invite inspiring presenters to share their success stories with our students so students get first-hand, real experience from the business world and top information on trending topics. Our Learning from Leaders series invites members of the EU community to share their knowledge and give our students some wise words about how to succeed in the business world. Presenters have included Fabiola Eyholzer, CEO at Just Leading Solutions and Oriol Bueno, Managing Partner at the Barcelona Soccer Academy to name but a few. It certainly isn t rare to stop by one of the EU campuses and discover that somewhere on site, an alumnus, entrepreneur or business leader is sharing their professional wisdom with our eager students. Guest Speakers is another series organized across all EU campuses, also focusing on providing our students with information and advice on best practices from the extensive experience of business professionals. These past two years have seen many key figures impart their knowledge on our international students: former President of Switzerland, Adolf Ogi and Mathieu Jaton, Director of the Montreux Jazz Festival are just two of the many special guests we have received. 12

13 ENJOYABLE EVENTS At EU Business School we place emphasis on giving our students more than just academic knowledge. We believe that giving them the opportunity to see the world from a different angle makes them more socially responsible leaders of the future. We regularly organize study trips to the Change the World Model UN, a student simulation of UN operations in New York City. The event involves thousands of students sharing ideas, debating various topics and confronting each other on international issues during these intense working sessions, recreating the UN experience and working similarly to UN bodies. The 2015 Asia Study Tour helped our students to gain a greater understanding of Eastern cultures, realizing how diverse the world and its people are. Participants visited various multinational corporations in China and South Korea, including Samsung, KIA Motors and Airbus, and gained inside knowledge of Asian business culture. A study tour like this requires its members to adapt to and be flexible about situations in order to proceed successfully in an unfamiliar environment. It was a journey that changed our lives, made us see the world through different lenses and formed strong bonds among those who took part in this great adventure. Olivia Gustavsson, BBA, Montreux ETHICS IN CURRICULUM Ethical behavior is an essential part of socially responsible business conduct. At EU, we continue to place special importance on this, since it is an ethos all business people must follow, regardless of their field of activity. Therefore, Ethics in Business is a mandatory course for all majors. Students use case studies to identify ethical issues, analyze them using learned principles and make recommendations to resolve them. The course also prepares students for the social responsibility challenges and opportunities they will face throughout their careers. Ethical topics, such as sustainability, are recurrent issues in all our undergraduate and graduate programs. They form an essential part of business behavior and are important in all aspects of global business conduct. As EU alumna Ana Gabriela Cerpa Douglas formulated in her dissertation about The Importance of Corporate Social Responsibility and its Influence in Today s Business World : Applying CSR principles in everyday business enriches the experience for all the stakeholders involved by providing the framework for responsible, sustainable and ethical business practices involving human rights, labor rights, environment, anti-corruption and accountability. 13

14 03 PRINCIPLE 4 LEARNING FRAMEWORKS We are constantly focusing on developing new learning frameworks and incorporating them into our curricula in order to successfully keep pace with the latest world developments, offering our students the newest technology and ways of thinking. 14

15 Blended Programs The 2012 Annual Internet Survey showed that over six million people around the globe are achieving success with e-learning programs. To keep up with today s busy schedules and upward corporate mobility trends, we opened our online campus, making higher-education more accessible on a global scale. Our online programs are blended courses which give a global outlook, enabling our students to network with faculty and students from all over the world, without having to go abroad. One key characteristic is that within the online educational frame it is easy to rapidly tailor the programs to the students needs. Not having to be tied to a specific location, we can get major company leaders to deliver their expertise from wherever they are. Online Executive BBA The Online Executive Bachelor in Business Administration is the ideal offering for students seeking a more flexible degree program or a bridge to our Online MBA. It was created as an answer to working professionals who are seeking ways of developing their skills, but at the same time keeping their middle or senior manager positions. Its objective is to equip professionals with theoretical and conceptual knowledge, strengthening their extensive work experience and preparing them for the EU Online MBA program. EXECUTIVE DIPLOMA PROGRAMS & EXECUTIVE CERTIFICATE COURSES EU s executive diploma and executive certificate programs were developed to offer excellent skill-building alternatives to pursuing a degree. The programs introduce the fundamental concepts and practices required by professionals to maintain or improve upon their competence in business. The program strategically focuses on the practical application of value added courses in underlying functional areas: accounting, finance, marketing, human resources and management. Sustainability program The Bachelor of Arts in Business & Sustainability Management program was introduced to reflect the growing importance of sustainability in today s business world. This program combines the concepts of sustainability and management and teaches students how to organize aspects of a company s environmental, social and financial well-being, through comprehensive and balanced attention to its system of resources, while bearing in mind corporate and stakeholder interests. Online MBA Our flagship Online MBA program adapts its on-site counterpart to fit online needs with an easy-to-use web platform, acclaimed lecturers with experience in online education and on-campus weeks for a truly blended experience. Corporate Solutions EU s Corporate Solutions courses support the concept of life-long learning. Training, whether inside or out of the office, is an investment that increases a company s competitive edge, brings in new knowledge and skills, contributes to higher employee satisfaction and consequently lowers staff turnover. 15

16 04 PRINCIPLES 5&6 PARTNERSHIP We share the concept that together we can reach further than alone. Therefore, we join forces with other organizations on a global level to progress in critical issues related to global social responsibility and development. B eing global doesn t just mean doing business worldwide. Global players also have to take global responsibility. EU Business School collaborates with numerous institutions and foundations to support social responsibility and sustainability both in their local communities and around the world. MERCY SHIPS Founded in 1978 in Lausanne, Switzerland, by Don and Deyon Stephens, Mercy Ships has worked in over 70 countries, with more than 2.48 million beneficiaries. Their objective is to deliver free, world-class healthcare services to the developing world. Over 1,200 volunteers take care of an average 25,000 patients annually. Professionals including surgeons, dentists, nurses, teachers, seamen and engineers all donate their time and skills to this worthy and effective cause, all endeavoring to bring hope and to treat those who are not fortunate enough to afford proper medical care. EU has collaborated with Mercy Ships for a number of years and continues to make monetary donations to help keep them afloat. In 2014, Mercy Ships was also awarded the Corporate Responsibility Award from EU, in recognition of their outstanding efforts and contributions to the developing world they continue to provide almost 30 years on. FREUDE HERRSCHT Children s charity Freude Herrscht (joy prevails) was founded by former President of Switzerland Dr. Adolf Ogi. The Swiss-based organization was initiated following the sudden death of Ogi s late son Matthias, who tragically died of cancer in Freude Herrscht is dedicated to lending financial support to various programs and events that serve to promote a healthy degree of self-esteem and physical fitness to children. Dr. Ogi comments that the organization s objective is to endow tomorrow s generation with fitness, a spirit of helpfulness, the traits of determination and perseverance, a willingness to form friendships and of course to experience enjoyment in games and shared activities. EU recognizes its responsibility to give back to the community, and therefore relishes any opportunity to support worthy causes such as Freude Herrscht. 16

17 GUARDIA CIVIL The Guardia Civil is a military force in Spain that undertakes various police duties in all cities. This year, EU has joined other companies and organizations to back them in their recent campaign for training children on road safety and transportation in cities. KOFI ANNAN FOUNDATION The Kofi Annan Foundation works to promote better global governance and strengthen the capacities of people and countries to achieve a fairer, more secure world. The three main areas of activity are Peace & Security, Sustainable Development and Rule of Law and Human Rights. Students at the EU Business School Swiss campuses donated a monetary contribution to this foundation BARRY FOUNDATION Following its creation in January 2005, the Barry Foundation took over the breeding kennel from the Great Saint Bernard Pass Hospice (Holy Order of the Great Saint Bernard Monastery). Among others, their mission is to make the public aware of the fact that the Saint Bernards from the hospice are both a Swiss cultural asset and a symbol of the friendship between humans and animals. Students at the EU Business School Swiss campuses donated a monetary contribution to this foundation. INSTAGRAM SELFIES In the build-up to the festive season of 2014, EU encouraged students to upload their selfies onto Instagram with the hashtag #EUSELFIEWISHES2015, in order to raise money and awareness for the Switzerland-based children s charity Freude Herrscht. For every selfie uploaded, EU donated to the organization founded by the former Swiss president Adolf Ogi. For the past couple of years, people have deemed selfies as an act of narcissism and vanity; here numerous EU students, staff and faculty, alumni and friends turned them into an act of selfless generosity and we couldn t be prouder to be a part of such a worthy and dignified cause. 17

18 05 LOOKING FORWARD EU Business School s objective is to continue our path and further deepen our commitment to our principles by exploring additional ways of implementing them in all walks of business life and education. Through the continuous evaluation, analysis and subsequent updating of our curriculum, we plan to keep our efforts focused by bringing in new programs and offering an even wider variety of learning and participation methods in order to help develop the concept of lifelong learning. We are dedicated to offering education options that cater for all students, including those who work either full- or part-time. As such, we have a number of courses and programs that encompass a blended experience. Our online studying options smoothly merge online and on-campus studying, and we are committed to introducing further ITbased learning methods into the traditional classroom setting. Our vision of the future is that all our programs, starting at the undergraduate level, will be offered as blended learning options. This is in response to market demands and trends within the educational sector. We continue to look for and build solid international partnerships which originate in our core values of innovation, excellence integrity, leadership and passion. We also plan to expand on existing collaborations by furthering the opportunities offered. This is already evident in the additional three-year bachelor s programs offered as a result of the University of Derby partnership.
