Connect ASME Pressure Vessels & Piping Conference 6 ASME Energy Forum Message from the Section Chair David Klimas, P.E., ASME Chicago Section Chair Recently, while I reflected on if I wanted to volunteer to run for the Chair of the section I couldn t help but think about why I originally became a Mechanical Engineer and in particular an ASME member. It came down to developing and maintaining a strong network, being able to associate oneself with one of the most prestigious professional groups in the country and take advantage of some of the best resources around including specifications, books, available experts. The Mechanical Engineering profession has been more than I could have ever imagined these past 20 years. I hope the next 20 years are just as rewarding!!! It has been challenging, fulfilling and interesting. I haven t stopped learning something new every day and look forward to the challenges of tomorrow. ASME is a platform to help you meet those challenges. So they answer was a resounding Yes! First, I want to welcome all Chicago Section Members and encourage you to participate as much as possible in upcoming activities. I know we will have a full schedule and are always looking for suggestions for tours, technical topics or things to do. Feel free to contact me any time. When is the last time you attended a technical presentation or volunteered to give a presentation to perspective engineering students? Trust me, you will find it very rewarding. Why not take a moment and put our next meeting in your calendar? A couple of items I wanted to outline to the Section. Overall, I think that this is a critical time for ASME, the Chicago Section and the Mechanical Engineering profession overall. You only need to look at the state of manufacturing in this country the last couple of years and / or the cost of higher education today. Many young students are wondering if it is worth the effort. This perspective needs to be challenged and confronted head on by the membership. I challenge you to join me in becoming an ASME Mentor and giving back to our community. The Mechanical Engineering profession is alive and well. It is a great profession and one that transcends not only the shop floor but also the operating room, board room and the class rooms throughout this country. We need to get the word out!! One of the agenda items I hope we can attack in the coming months is developing a stronger Early Career Initiative as well as re-evaluating our Scholarship Program. Also, I think it is vital to create programs with a wider appeal and highlight non-typical Mechanical Engineering roles. Lastly, I hope to hold more joint meetings with peer professional societies such as the Society of Woman Engineers (SWE) and the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE). I look forward to the challenges we will face in the coming months and working with everyone to ensure we maintain this great technical society and give back to a great profession Mechanical Engineering. 2 Local Section News: Meet Your Incoming Section Officers David J Klimas, P.E. -Section Chair David J Klimas an ASME member since 1993, Dave has served as Vice Chair the last two years and Section Treasurer for four years, prior to this time. He has served on the Section Operating Board since 2005 and has been in charge of K-12 & Engineers Week, since this time. He is a New Product Development Engineer for DE- STA-CO CAMCO Products, Wheeling, Illinois. Edmund C. Feldy, P.E. - Secretary * Edmund C Feldy PE, ASME Fellow, member since Current Secretary Chicago Section, Former chair ASME Design Engineering Division (DED) Education Committee, has been active in many DED activities. Distinguished Member of Technical Staff, Bell Labs; now retired. X-Machina Chicago Section Supports FIRST Robotics Team The Chicago Section has been an active supporter of the Lane Tech High School First Robotics Team, X-Machina. Our support included both financial and personal interaction with the Lane Tech Team. This support was in conjunction with the UIC ASME Student Chapter. This was a great example of ASME Chicago bridging the gap and supporting future engineers at both the college and high school levels. Great job!! We contributed directly $2,000 to the Lane Tech FIRST Robotics team in 2 bites, $1,000 to help them with the Midwest Regional and the other $1,000 to help cover transportation cost for the team to attend the national competition in St Louis. ASME member, Ed Feldy, worked as a technical mentor with the team for 5 evenings during design and construction, attended the regional "kick-off" and regional competition in support of the team. The UIC ASME Student Section sent 1-3 mentors to Lane Tech 3-4 days each week for 5 weeks during the build season of the competition. Additionally, our chapter paid for 5 students and 2 faculty member of the Lane Tech FIRST team to attended the WSE Washington Awards banquet in Chicago. The Lane Tech Team did very well, winning the Rookie All-Star Award during the regional competition and finished with a winning 5-3 record, coming in 39th in our division of 100 at the World Championship in St. Louis. Go to the Team website: for more information. ASME Section News 2

3 Chicago Section Seed Funds Wheaton College Engineering Club At their 12 April 2013, meeting the Section Operating Board approved providing $500 to Wheaton College for the specific purpose of funding formational and initial activities of an engineering club. The existence of a dualdegree (3/2) engineering program at the college has been almost unknown. There are more than 40 students enrolled in the joint (with Illinois Institute of Technology) engineering program in the eight disciplines offered. Mechanical engineering is the discipline having the second largest (behind civil engineering) student enrollment. Chicagoland Engineers Week Awards Banquet On 21 February 2013, members of the Chicago Section joined nearly 350 other engineers, engineering and high school students at the 2013 Awards Banquet. Guests ot the Section were members of the X-Machina robotics team (see article elsewhere in this edition). Held each year, the banquet is the premier gathering of Metropolitan Chicago engineers. Awards are presented to pre-college STEM students who have successfully competed in STEM-based area competitions. The keynote each year is the recipient of the Washington Award (www.washingtonaward.com), an USA resident engineer who has made significant contributions to the profession and society. This year s recipient was Dr. Kristina Johnson, the founder and CEO of Enduring Hydro. She is the former Dean of Engineering at Duke University and former USA Undersecretary of Energy. Her research has led to the improved displays we enjoy. Your ASME Chicago Section is active in the organization, planning, and support of the banquet. Two section members are on the Washington Award selection commission, and one works with the banquet development committee. Each year the section, along with other engineering businesses and society units, contributes to the cost of having the honorees students and speaker, attend as guests of the engineering community.
