The logistics concerning the project and trip are as follows: What & Where A mission trip to Roaring Creek, Belize in Central America for the purpose of constructing a church building for a Spanish speaking congregation. Dates June 6 th 14 th, Involvement Anyone who feels the leadership of the Holy Spirit and has a desire to go. 3 Our partners in ministry at Lifeway have been busy throughout the fall and winter months. They have been working extremely hard preparing and securing valuable resources for this year s Vacation Bible School. As such, we too should be planning and preparing for this wonderful evangelistic opportunity in our churches. The setting and theme for this year s adventure promises to both exciting and challenging. So let s get on board and get pumped-up about our journey as we explore Australia s Outback together. Please remember, about 30% (thirty percent) of all professions of faith and baptisms in Southern Baptist Churches occur in Vacation Bible Schools offered by our churches. Pastors, this is one of the best evangelism tools available to you and the congregations you serve. Have You Made Application for CVBA Educational / Scholarship Funding for the Spring and Fall Semesters of 2009? Don t forget! At the Annual Meeting of the CVBA our messengers approved $7, for our Strengthening Churches Team. This funding will be dispersed in the form of scholarships and continuing education funding for those in our churches enrolled, or planning to enroll, in continuing education. And remember, these funds are not limited to pastors but are readily available to others enrolled in college, seminary, or other training that will aid in the advancement of our Father s Kingdom. Some examples of these might be but are not limited to: (1) Pastors or other key church leaders who are enrolled in college or seminary classes either on campus, through distance learning, or at John Leland Center for Theological Training such as those offered at Wise, Nickelsville, and Glade Spring. (2) Pastors, Church Staff & Lay Leaders who wish to attend training events at Richmond, Eagle Eyrie, Ridgecrest, or other training locations. 4 The mission of The Southwest Virginia Christian Leadership Network is to provide practical church training and theological study for laypersons and ministers in Southwest Virginia in order to further the cause of Kingdom Advance, enhance the ministry of our churches, and provide spiritual renewal for individuals. This study in Exodus is designed to lead adults to expand their understanding of God including truths about His nature and character and to fulfill God s expectations of them as His people. Four essential truths about God form the basis of the content of the Book of Exodus: (1) God is always faithful. (2) God is absolutely powerful. (3) God is continuously good. (4) God is eternally present. These four truths provide the outline for this January Bible Study The outline for this year s study is as follows: Session 1 God is Always Faithful (Exodus 1:1 7:13) Chapter 1 Seek God s Help Chapter 2 Accept God s Challenge Session 2 God is Absolutely Powerful (Exodus 7:14 15:21) Chapter 3 Trust God Daily Chapter 4 Recognize God Alone Session 3 God is Continually Good (Exodus 15:22 23:22) Chapter 5 Rely on God Chapter 6 Obey God Session 4 God is Eternally Present (Exodus 24:1 40:38) Chapter 7 Worship God Chapter 8 Serve God Hints for leading the study: 1. Break the study up into an eight week study by covering one chapter each week. 5

6 2. Give your pastor a much-needed break and enlist as many people as possible to lead the studies (preferably one facilitator for each session, or eight different facilitators, a different one for each session). 3. Try asking questions rather than engaging in lecture type teaching to generate brainstorming among those enrolled in the study. 4. Avoid using questions that require only yes or no answers. 5. CVBA Vision Statement Our Vision is to see our Churches unified in fulfilling the Great Commissions in a spirit of love. CVBA Educational / Scholarship hip Fund The Strengthening Churches Team of the CVBA is pleased to announce the inclusion of a new education/ scholarship fund for the benefit of our churches. The breakdown of the 2009 CVBA Budget concerning the Strengthening Churches Team looks like this: 1. Continuing Education for Pastors / Leaders 6, Vacation Bible School Training / Assistance 1, Pastor s / Wives Conference & Scholarship Fund 1, Total 7,

8 The purpose of these scholarship funds is to assist people within our churches who wish to enhance their leadership skills that include, but are not limited to, the following areas of ministry: 1. Continuing Education for Pastors / Leaders funding from this category will assist pastors and other key leaders in our churches by providing continuing education scholarships for formal ministerial training. Funding will be dispersed in the form of college, seminary, and continuing education scholarships. Those interested in obtaining assistance would provide needed information through formal requests to the Strengthening Churches Team. 2. Vacation Bible School Training / Assistance funding from this category will assist our churches annually by hosting regional VBS Clinics. In addition, this will also provide funding for VBS leaders from our association and churches to attend national VBS training seminars such as those held by LifeWay at Ridgecrest Training Center in North Carolina. Smaller churches within the association can also request partnership funding to help defray the cost of VBS in their churches. 3. Pastors / Wives Conference Scholarship Fund funding from this category will be used to provide scholarships for pastors and wives to attend local, regional, and national conferences. Examples would be the annual Appalachian Ministers / Staff Retreat, regional & statewide Ministers / Wives retreats, and local conferences. Scholarship forms are readily available and can be requested by sending an to Steve Collins at fbcnick@mounet.com or by contacting Nickelsville, First Church at In addition, three different types of scholarship funding is also available from the Virginia Baptist Mission for students of cooperating churches of the Baptist General Association of Virginia (BGAV). These forms of scholarship assistance are: (1) Achievement Scholarships up to $1, per year for full-time, non-ministerial students studying in an accredited program. (2) Ministerial Scholarships Up to $5, per year for full-time ministerial students, a lesser award is available to part-time students. (3) Non-Traditional Ministry Education Scholarships 1/3 of the cost ($125.00) of a 3 hour course for part-time students enrolled through the VBMB at Baptist Theological Seminary at Richmond, the John Leland Center for Theological Studies, Bluefield College, Clear Creek Baptist Bible College (KY), or Virginia Intermont College.
