1 Division I SAAC Time Demands Survey ATH 1.1 This survey was developed for Division I student-athletes by the NCAA Division I Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC). Your participation in the survey is voluntary, and all answers you provide are anonymous. The survey should take less than five minutes of your time. Survey results will be used to continue to facilitate a national discussion on the issue of time demands in Division I athletics. Thank you for your participation. My primary sport is: Baseball My university's primary athletic conference is: America East Conference Year in school: Freshman Have you participated in an NCAA Championship (any round, individual or team)? Yes No How many off-days per week should be required while you are in-season? 0

2 Current NCAA rules require 1 off-day per week in-season. A day spent traveling to/from a competition can count as the off-day. If this were to change, please rank the following options in terms of your preference (1=top choice, 5=least favorite option) An off-day cannot include travel. Ranking An off-day can include travel not to exceed 2 hours. An off-day can include travel not to exceed 4 hours. An off-day can include travel not to exceed 6 hours. An off-day can include travel without any limit on time. Were time demands for your sport accurately described to you during the recruiting process at your current school? My actual sport time demands are less than what I was told during recruitment. If I had been more aware of the time demands in my sport, I would not have chosen to attend a Division I college. Division I coaches should be required to discuss time demands during the recruiting process. Incoming student-athletes should be required to attend an orientation session that addresses time demands. New student-athletes should be required to attend a workshop session that addresses time management skills.

3 The problem is not time demands for Division I student-athletes, but a lack of time management skills. Countable Athletically Related Activities Currently, coutable athletically related activities (CARA) in-season are limited to no more than 4 hours per day, and a maximum of 20 hours per week. Additionally, each competition--regardless of length--is counted as 3 hours of CARA. How supportive would you be if the cap on hours spent on sport per day in-season was lifted, but there remained a cap on hours per week (e.g. no more than 20 hours/week, but no restriction on hours/day)? What should be the maximum number of hours spent on your sport per week? How supportive would you be if the cap on hours spent on sport per week in-season was lifted, but there remained a cap on the number of hours spent on sport per day (e.g. no more than 4 hours/day)? What should be the maximum number of hours spent per day for your sport? 2 On average how many hours do you spend on your sport during a typical day of competition? (Please enter a whole number from 1 to 20). Post Competition Break It has been proposed that at the end of the competition season each team have a week to wrap up the

4 season, followed by a mandatory "no activity period" to give student-athletes a break before the off-season begins. How supportive would you be of a mandatory "no activity period" at the end of the competition season? What is the appropriate length for a "no activity period" following the competition season? 0 Weeks NCAA rules prohibit missing class time in conjunction with non-championship segment competition. For example, this prohibits missing class time for fall baseball competitions and spring soccer games. How supportive would you be of expanding this to all sports? How supportive would you be of eliminating non-conference mid-week games? Additional comments regarding mid-week non-conference competition. (Optional) During which month are time demands the most difficult for you to manage? January DI National SAAC thanks you for your participation.
