1 Athletic Compliance NCAA Rules Education April 7, 2015 Progress Towards Degree (PTD) Eligibility for Financial Aid and Practice After a student-athlete s initial year in residence or after the student-athlete has used one season of eligibility Based upon rules of the institution and the conference Stay in good academic standing, enrolled full-time Eligibility for Competition Pass 6 credit hours the previous full-time semester, and Before each fall term - completion of an average of 12 credit hours during each previous full-time term, or Completion of 24 credit hours since the beginning of the previous two regular semesters (part-time hours don t count toward credit requirement, but do count toward GPA) Upperclassmen 2.0 GPA, Soph GPA, Fresh /25 rule At least 75% must be earned during regular semesters Up to 25% can be earned during summer courses Declare major by 5 th semester (beginning of 3 rd year) 1

2 Progress Towards Degree (PTD) Hours earned or accepted for degree credit First 2 years of enrollment credit towards any degree Beginning 3 rd year, credit towards designated degree Final academic year of degree program Can use credits from any degree program to satisfy 6 hour rule PTD Exceptions Midyear enrollment transfer hours may be prorated at 12 credits per term to meet PTD during initial academic year Nonrecruited, Nonparticipant Graduate Student Exception Two-Year Nonparticipation Exception Transfer Regulations Must serve year in residence Disciplinary Suspension Foreign Institution Transfer Two-Year Transfers Qualifier with no previous 4-year college attendance Attended at least 1 full-time semester Transfers an average of 12 credit hours per full-time semester 2.0 GPA May still practice and receive aid if requirements not met All other qualifiers, partial qualifiers, nonqualifiers Attended at least 2 full-time semesters Graduated from 2-year college with 25% earned at graduating institution, or Transfers an average of 12 credit hours per full-time semester with at least a 2.0 GPA 2

3 Transfer Regulations All other qualifiers, partial qualifiers, nonqualifiers Additional Requirements 6 credit hours of English, 3 credit hours of math Remedial English/math classes cannot be used Do not need to satisfy this requirement if S-A graduates from 2-year college English/math requirement may be satisfied using credit earned at previous 4-year institution Part-time semester hours at 2-year college can be counted Previous 4-year institution hours cannot be counted All other qualifiers and partial qualifiers may still practice and receive aid if requirements are not met Nonqualifiers may not practice or receive aid if requirements are not met Two-year college exceptions can be utilized by qualifiers only Transfer Regulations Four-Year Transfers Transfer students must fulfill the residence requirement Can practice and receive aid if attended previous 4-year school for at least one academic year Attended less than one year; eligibility for practice and athletic aid determined by high school academic record and test scores Exceptions for 4-year transfers Discontinued/Nonsponsored Sport Two-year Nonparticipation Exception Return to Original Institution Exception (no or minimal participation) Nonrecruited Student Exception One-Time Transfer Exception Eligible at the time of transfer, meets PTD Previous school grants exception Final season/2 FT semesters must transfer average of 12 credit hours per FT semesters with 2.0 GPA Cannot compete in same segment at different schools 3

4 Recruiting Calendar Football Quiet Period Evaluation Period (4 weeks between April 15-May 31) Basketball Men Dead Period - ends today at noon Dead period 48 hrs. prior to NLI signing Women 7 a.m. - April 15, 2015 (regular period) Dead Period ends tomorrow at noon Dead Period 48 hrs. prior to NLI signing 7 a.m. April 15, 2015 (regular period) All other sports except soccer Dead period 48 hrs. prior to NLI signing 7 a.m. - April 15, 2015 (regular period) Reminders from the NCAA High school transcript evaluations Evaluations currently being done Potential problems include failed courses, duplicate coursework, nontraditional programs. High school misadvisement or lack of advisement assertions will not be persuasive in the waiver process for recruited student-athletes. National Letter of Intent Prospective student-athletes who have signed a National Letter of Intent must receive academic and amateurism certifications. Please encourage your NLI signees to provide all academic records as soon as possible to avoid last-minute problems. 4

5 Reminders Competition/travel must be institution certified Roster and IRL updates Transfer and Freshman on roster should be on IRL New student-athletes who are returning students Compliance paperwork/medical training staff Register in eligibility center Complete amateurism in eligibility center CARA Reports Active/Inactive players on roster Travel Itineraries 24 hours before departure Official Visits 48 hours before visit Forms visits, tryouts, GIA, etc. 5
