Lacy is the author of Taxifornia: How Liberals are Bankrupting California. He identifies and examines the true causes of California s decline. Congressman Darrell Issa (R-CA) wrote: Taxifornia is a cautionary tale of what can and will happen to America if Washington follows the lead of what Sacramento has done in the past decade. Issa emphatically added Lacy s Taxifornia is our call to action! Lacy is admitted to practice law in California and in D.C., and G reetings! I am writing this on Memorial Day and thinking about my dad who fought in WWII. 3 Information ~ Primary Election ~ June 3rd, 2014 P A G E 3 Our by-laws indicate we cannot endorse Republicans if there is more than one Republican candidate running. The following candidates are the only Republicans running, therefore we can list them here. Greg Conlon - Treasurer Ted Gaines - Insurance Commissioner Scott Wilk - State Assembly 38th District Peter Foy - Ventura County Supervisor The California Federation Republican Women take the following position on Propositions 41& 42. Prop 41 - Oppose Amend the Veterans' Bond Act of 2008 to reduce the amount of authorized bonds from $900 million to $300 million. Enact the Veterans Housing and Homeless Prevention Bond Act of 2014 to authorize $600 million in bonds to provide multifamily housing, such as apartment complexes, to low-income veterans and supportive housing for homeless veterans. Our vets need a hand up, not a hand out, and this Prop is just a temporary fix, not a real solution. Our vets would benefit from a vibrant economy, jobs, and tax credits to businesses that hire vets would be a better place to start. This prop takes from one large set of veterans and gives to a much smaller set. There are approximately 1,900,000 vets in California who could use the existing CalVet program to procure loans for houses, farms, and property. This Prop would take money from the 2008 CalVet bond and use it to build multi-purpose, low income housing for 1% of the vet population, homeless vets. There are already federal programs in place for our homeless vets, who would be better served with jobs and programs that help them get back on their feet. This prop is creating yet another bureaucracy and a tax liability for Californian's to shoulder the burden. The new act would leave $300,000,000 in the CalVet Loan program for the purchases of homes and farms. The remainder of the $600,000,000 bond would take care of the approximately 19,000 homeless veterans in California. There should be a better way than to take from 99% to support 1%. Our vets deserve better, more creative options. Prop 42 - Support Prop 42 is called the California Compliance of Local Agencies with Public Records Act. It would require that all local agencies comply with the California Public Records Act (CPRA) and the Brown Act. A good question would be: why weren t localities already complying with these important transparency acts? Prop 42 would guarantee a private citizen s right to open public records and to attend public meetings. This could save the state millions of dollars by eliminating the requirement that the state reimburse local agencies for compliance with these laws. Now the local agencies must comply with these transparency laws and will be incentivized to keep costs down since the state will no longer reimburse costs. In an increasingly paperless world, most local agencies should make their records available online to keep costs low and transparency high.

4 P A G E 4 Growing the SVRWF & Finding the Next Generation of Leaders By Leah Schwochert As all of you know, it is imperative for all organizations to maintain their headcount or grow in order to be healthy and vibrant and avoid becoming stale and ineffective. This is no different for our club. We need to continually look for ways to bring new members into the club and for ways to keep our current members engaged and excited. New members are important to us because they: Help fulfill our objectives as stated in our by-laws: 1. To promote a wider knowledge of the principles and policies of the Republican Party; 2. To foster loyalty to the Republican Party and to promote its principles and candidates in all elections including nonpartisan elections; 3. To promote an informed public through political education and activity; 4. To increase the effectiveness of women in the cause of good government; 5. To encourage active citizenship; 6. To influence legislation in accordance with CFRW objectives; 7. To cooperate with the Republican National Committee and the State and County Central Committees for the election of Republican nominees. Allow for additional volunteers to work towards our mission (sometimes we are just tired); Provide for an influx of new, fresh ideas on current practices and systems (pushes us out of our comfort zone); Provide for brand new ideas we never thought of (a burst of energy); and Allow for us to begin the process of training the next generation of leaders (we need to keep our funnel full for board members, especially positions which require prior board experience). So what does this really mean to each of us? It means we must consider ourselves SVRWF recruiters. Good recruiters cast a wide net: Republicans, friends, family, neighbors, church members, women who are dissatisfied with the current administration. Invite them to our meetings, to work campaign headquarters, or one of our other events. I will share a little trick I used to do. If I had just interviewed a great candidate, I would write them a thank you letter instead of waiting for them to write me a thank you letter! Ask me or one of the other board members to write a note thanking them for coming to our event! Let s make them feel special. If you get feedback about how we need to offer something differently to make us more attractive to new members (time, day of the week for meetings, different speakers, different events, etc.) let me or a board member know. The last bullet on the list above is critical. We need to have more women in our hopper or funnel ready to take on leadership roles when the opportunity presents itself. It is great to promote from within and have women who know our club, our values and can hit the street running. It is up to each of us to be the best recruiter for not only our club but for the Republican Party. I am counting on you and the Republican Party is counting on you. When women work, we win! You have all summer to be recruiters, let s go get more women!!!

5 P A G E 5 Almost here again! Join the stampede! Help get conservative candidates elected. Once again we will have our headquarters in the Sycamore plaza, Sycamore and Cochran across from Target. Currently we are collecting names for volunteering. If you wish to volunteer, please call Leah at As soon as we are ready to begin setting up (probably sometime early July), we will give you a call! 8 P A G E 8 Caring for America with Love ~ Marti Meister, Chair The Caring for America with Love committee is now forming and determining where and when to meet. We would love to have you join us, if you have an interest in our non-profit organizations and ideas for the future. We especially need to plan our contribution for Literacy month in September. Last year we contributed to a new library at White Oak Elementary. We also gave some books to the Boys and Girls Club. Please save any unneeded books, for children or adults, and we will find a good use for them. The Boys and Girls Club can always use more art supplies, especially markers, and 8 1/2 by 11 paper for art or schoolwork. Unneeded paint brushes would be very welcome also. They are updating the entire building and have many things on their wish list. This year, our donation from the Garden Tour will go toward their garden. For The Troops appreciate small items such as snacks, personal items, pocketbook or puzzle books, batteries, even a small jar of peanut butter. The recent rise of postal rates really cut the number of packages they can ship monthly. Our $200 monthly donation really helps. Call Marti Meister at (805) or at mparkgeo@aol.com. One of our 2014 new members, Marti Meister, has taken on the Chair position for Caring for America. Thank you Marti! Within a couple weeks, Marti has already formed a committee and visited our two charities, The Boys & Girls Club and For the Troops. And a big Thank You to Pam Campeau as she did double duty as First VP Programs and Chair, Caring for America for 5 months. Thank you both! Looks like we have another Wonder Woman among us! We look forward to your many contributions in this very important position.

9 SVRWF 2014 President s Message P A G E 9 deaths at the VA hospitals to get people to focus on the true meaning of the day. It had to be easier in a way for my dad and his generation to fight the enemy. After all, the Germans were taking over Europe and the Japanese had bombed Pearl Harbor. Clearly, there was a winner and the war ended. But who is our enemy today? Whom shall we fear? Is it: A) Radical Islam; B) Russia; C) China with cyberterrorism & holding our debt; D) Iran; E) or is American apathy, the media Continued from Page 1 and the infringement on our rights (latest being our thoughts)? There are many enemies knocking at our door more than this list. Which enemy do we chose to tackle first? Who will lead us into battle? How do we mobilize? How to conquer? Strategies, organizing, leading are all part of the game plan. June 3rd is fast upon us. We must participate. We must Join The Stampede and begin the fight to right our country. Please vote. Encourage your family, friends, and neighbors to vote. Come to meeting, volunteer at campaign headquarters, attend a candidate event! Simply put stay involved or get back involved. As the Memorial Day ends and the BBQs are over and the dishes are washed let us remember those that have died and those that have sacrificed so much for the freedom we have. May God bless them, their families and the United States of America. Cheers, Leah E D U C A T E E N T H U S I A S M E N G A G E June s Luncheon Menu at Wood Ranch Country Club is as follows: Chicken Alfredo Pasta, made with gluten free penne pasta, Alfredo sauce, grilled chicken and sundried tomatoes. 12 P A G E 12 A HUGE THANK YOU to Annette Cramer for stepping up and taking over the Poll Captain role! She jumped in and re-organized and filled up our shifts! Annette and I learned a lot in a short time and learned from our mistakes. Unfortunately, no one in the club wanted to be inspectors so we outsourced those two positions and will forfeit those funds. On the bright side, we have husbands and wives volunteering to be clerks - biggest thank yous! Annette is going to stay on for the November elections and re-work the shift times again and try to get inspectors from our club! Bottom line: we kept the polls and did not have to give the poll to the Newbury Park Democrat Club - they were ready to swoop in and snatch it up. Annette is my Wonder Woman! Can you take your lasso of truth and put it around a politician I have one or two in mind Member Spot Light Virginia Montero Question: Who is your hero and one of those brand new inventions why? called a microwave. 13 P A G E 13 California Legislation Information From: Capitol Update Friday, May 30, 2014 California Federation of Republican Women End of Session Scramble May 30th was the deadline for bills to pass out of their house of origin and onto the next house in order to stay alive and continue on their bill journey. All bills that are not passed out of their original house will fail passage and be killed. Unfortunately many of the bills the CFRW opposes have already passed out of their house of origin and are already in the next house. But the good news is that now we have a new opportunity to try to crush these bad bills in their next committees once the Legislature returns from their summer recess. Here are some of the bills we will be working on defeating: AB 1522 (Gonzales, D): Would require all California employers to provide paid sick leave for all employees that work more than 7 calendar days in a year. They would accrue one hour of paid sick leave for every 30 hours worked. Status: Held in Senate Rules for Committee assignment SB 837 (Steinberg, D): After amendments, would provide transitional kindergarten for low-income 4 year olds across the state to the tune of $387 million a year. Original bill would have mandated pre-kindergarten for all Californians. Status: Read in Assembly, held at desk SB 935 (Leno, D): Would adjust required minimum wage to $11 an hour in 2015 and would increase by one dollar every year until 2017, when the minimum wage would be adjusted to reflect inflation and the consumer price index. Status: Read in Assembly, held at desk SB 1000 (Monning, D): Would require drinks containing sugar to have a safety warning label and all sugary drinks manufactured, sold, and/or distributed in California would be required to have the label. Status: Read in Assembly, held at desk SB 1077 (DeSaulnier, D): Would establish a pilot program for vehicle mileage based fees, or in other words, taxing Californians for every mile they drive. Status: Read in Assembly, held at desk
