2 Foreword FDI first launched World Oral Health Day (WOHD) at its Annual World Dental Congress in Dubai in The date was originally fixed as 12 September, corresponding to the birthday of the Federation s founding father, Dr Charles Godon of France. Despite one or two success stories notably the Healthy Smiles photograph, later video, competition in New Zealand the response was mixed and, while events took place, they remained largely unreported. national dental associations at that time of year being on the Annual World Dental Congress (AWDC), which generally takes place during the same period. In response, FDI set up a Task Team to determine how to increase support for WOHD and its goals. Its recommendation to change the date to 20 March, thereby solving issues related to a simultaneous AWDC, was approved by the FDI General Assembly in Hong Kong in September preparation and launch. Pages 4 to 6 report briefly on activities and celebrations in 35-plus countries around the globe. Fuller reports are available on the FDI website (fdiworldental.org). FDI anticipates an increasingly successful World Oral Health Day in the coming years as more and more national dental associations and special groups rally around its concept and universal message. This was mainly due to lack of follow-up at FDI headquarters and the focus among World Oral Health Day 2013 was highly successful, given the limited time for its WOHD 2013 goals, strategy and action WOHD 2103 sought to re-establish FDI ownership of the concept and drive the celebration of the date. The goals were twofold: build awareness around oral health; and instigate action to affect behaviour. promote WOHD among all national dental associations, thereby ensuring its celebration in as many countries as possible; and provide a contact for liaison, where necessary, between the NDAs and Sponsors and logo which, thanks to their efforts, was available in 23 languages. The WOHD poster, also available in four languages, was customized to allow NDAs to insert their own logo as well as the logos of their local partners. FDI developed a unifying theme and followed up with a single campaign identity. The approach adopted was inclusive allowing for customized local activities. Support from two global sponsors, Johnson & Johnson and Unilever, allowed FDI to kick start WOHD activities. For its part, FDI developed the WOHD Toolkit a how to guide for WOHD celebrations in four languages (English, French, German, and Spanish). Distributed to all NDA s at the end of December 2012, the Toolkit was subsequently translated into Italian and Serbian following requests from the respective NDAs FDI also engaged the services of a public relations agency to develop a product to further enhance WOHD s visibility and influence. The agendy produced a one-minute video clip called The Tooth Symphony promoting oral hygiene as fun and posted on YouTube. A part-time project coordinator was hired between January and April 2103 to update the FDI website and post all WOHD materials; FDI further created a dedicated page on its website as a hub where NDAs could download materials such as the WOHD Toolkit, poster 2

Most of them have been re-tweets (761) and posts with links (226), but also tweets mentioning different users (179), replies (48) or simple tweets (88); #WOHD13: The hashtag has been viewed by 1,193,974 Twitter users. Facebook Daily posts to boost awareness; Facebook fan base has been increased by 1,120 people in six weeks, with an average of 31 people per day but with special impact on the week of the WOHD (515 people in 7 days). Only 36 people marked the option I do not like on the page during this period, a very low number; 2,429 users have interacted with the page with repercussions on their own websites ( People talking about it ), so the engagement rate for the Fan Page is for this period, which is a very good rate; The Fan Page has reached 154,649 Facebook users. The key activity period was during the WOHD week and the following one, especially during the paid posts promotion, which worked very well. Even so, the scope managed organically (direct) and virally (through fans) represents 59,996 users; The total impact of the Fan Page on Facebook was 262,340 impressions. Press conference Press conference organized in Geneva (on 18 March) with FDI president and representatives of Sponsors; Due to poor weather conditions, a limited audience; however very good online tracking with over 24 journalists following on streaming. NASDAQ Opening Thanks to Henry Schein, FDI, with ADA and representatives of Global Sponsors, had the opportunity to ring the bell at the NASDAQ opening: Large billboard celebrating WOHD with all logos was seen on Time Square. WOHD 2014 preparation Time was a major issue in 2013: many NDA s were unable to host activities due to time constraints (2 months to prepare) and/or due to other commitments. A number of NDAs have committed to hosting activities in 2014; June August 2013: preparation of the 2014 campaign, definition of theme and all global activities. WOHD logo will be reviewed to be more identifiable as an FDI event. Goal is to maintain the same logo afterwards; August 2013: Presentation of the 2014 toolkit at the FDI General Assembly and promotion of WOHD to all NDA s; September March: build-up. 3

4 Africa In Burkina Faso, an event held at the national police school reiterated the World Oral Health Day message and Health Minister Léné Sebgo emphasized the need to communicate the message of oral health among the wider population. In Egypt, the International Association of Dental Students, the Suez Canal Dental Students Association and the Dental Students Scientific Association-Egypt joined forces for two days of World Oral Health Day awareness campaigns, reaching over 4,000 people. In Mozambique, a special event took place at an orphanage near Maputo, which included a lecture on good oral hygiene habits, oral health screening and referral for free treatment and a drawing contest illustrating oral health. In Nigeria, citizens of Lagos saw the launch of a new World Record Tooth Brushing Challenge involving 300,000 children simultaneously brushing their teeth. The aim was to smash a previous record of 176,000 established in India. In Pakistan,170 dentists and dental students took part in an awareness walk. In Saudi Arabia, awareness-raising activities took place in public spaces both inside and outside. They included poster exhibits, T-shirts and other displays and information on oral health. Dental students campaign to raise awareness in Egypt In the Seychelles, a 3-day school event took place featuring a quiz, games to identify oral health friendly foods, model making and drawing as well as a song about toothbrushing. Asia In Myanmar, a series of oral health education lectures took place as well as an award for winners of the World Oral Health Day essay competition. In Nepal, a rally was held to commemorate the day. Local people carried oral health slogans, for example Brush and floss, or prepare for loss. In Vietnam, FDI President-Elect Dr Tin Chun Wong delivered a message of prevention at a special event held in Hanoi. In Ghana, the Ghana Dental Association joined with the Ministry of Health and JOY FM in organizing free dental screening for the general public and providing education on oral health. In Hong Kong, an oral health promotional poster was distributed to all registered dentists to display in their dental clinics. In Indonesia, a unique oral health activity aimed to promote oral health care for some 200 people with learning disabilities. All participants received special training in advance on how to approach people with special needs. Nigerians seek to beat world toothbrushing record 4 In Pakistan, 300 people visited a Free Oral-Health Camp and 170 dentists and dental students took part in an awareness walk. 5 Asia Pacific In Australia, the Australian Dental Association (ADA) urged all Australians to take the timely reminder of World Oral Health Day to brush up on their oral health and visit their dentist for a check-up. America In Brazil, the Department of Prevention and Health Promotion of the Sao Paulo Dental Association (APCD) a member of FDI through the Brazilian Dental Surgeon Association (ABCD) gave educative and preventive lectures for children and teenagers in public schools. to promote oral health and demonstrate oral hygiene practices. In Mexico, an open discussion on oral health took place involving federal and local health officials, members of the Senate and national defence as well as social security and union representatives, the dental industry, hospitals and universities. Europe In Armenia, 400 students communicated messages to local people about good brushing and oral health habits. In Croatia, World Oral Health Day was celebrated by members of the dental profession and around the country with events to heighten oral health awareness among schoolchildren. In Cyprus, the Larnaca Dental Association distributed a specially-created flyer illustrating the correct way to brush teeth and emphasizing the dangers of poor oral hygiene for general health from a stand in Larnaca s main shopping centre. In Denmark, the local chapter of Dental Health without Borders wished members of the public a Happy World Oral Health Day. In the United States, the World Oral Health Day theme of Healthy Teeth for a Healthy Life opened the NASDAQ stock market in New York City, courtesy of Henry Schein. In Estonia, oral health received wide media coverage, including published interviews with the Ministry of Social Affairs. Other awareness raising included advice on a tooth-friendly diet and methods of oral hygiene. In Jamaica, Brush Up Jamaica, the oral health campaign of the Association for Oral Health Advancement, the Jamaica Association for Dental Surgery and dental students, among others, joined together In France, World Oral Health Day proved an ideal occasion both for taking stock of the immense progress in the prevention of dental caries recorded in recent years and to caution against complacency. In Greece, the Hellenic Dental Association contacted the media with a special World Oral Day message on the impor- 5

6 tance of oral health. it also wrote to the Ministers of Health and Education elicit their support. In Malta, events took place to demonstrate how people should brush their teeth and raise awareness on the effects on oral health of smoking and of diabetes. In North Cyprus, activities included distribution of brochures on oral hygiene, dental examinations to pre-school children and the display of a dental trauma poster in schools, fitness centres and swimming pools. message was underlined by the participation of the Minister of Health. In Romania, awareness raising targeted children with advice on oral hygiene such as the correct way of brushing and information about plaque, decay and gum diseases, as well as nutrition and oral health. In Italy, free dental check-ups... In Hungary, over 600 children from kindergartens, elementary and secondary schools benefitted from sessions on prevention. Awareness raising events also took place in two of the country s department stores reached some 1,500 members of the public. In Italy, events around the country were widely covered in local and national media. In a number of cities, free dental check-ups were on offer, as well as advice on oral hygiene, diet and lifestyle. In Lithuania, educational events took place around the country to encourage students, patients and communities to focus on their oral health, a healthy lifestyle and principles of nutrition. In the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYRM), a sustained oral hygiene education campaign among kindergarten and elementary school children was widely reported in national and local media. In Malta, demonstrating how to brush teeth... 6 In Poland, messages targeting the media and general public addressed a wide variety of oral-heath related subjects and an open day took place where dental students examined patients. In Portugal, a conference called Healthy Teeth, Healthy Life took place alongside initiatives to raise awareness of oral health in dental practices and offices throughout the country. In Serbia, the local and national media provided extensive coverage of World Oral Health Day, which was complemented by an array of cultural and educational activities. In Slovenia, awareness raising activities included a statement to the media by Ministry of Health on screening for oral diseases, quality treatment, the impact of oral health on general health and other oral health-related issues. In Turkey, World Oral Health Day was widely covered in national and local media, with awareness-raising events taking place in public areas and messages on oral health displayed in strategic areas both inside and outside.
