3 Course overview This course gives an overview of the impact of HD video conferencing on a converged IP network, and suggests approaches for supporting a high quality video conferencing service. 3

4 End user requirements The video conferencing solution will only be successful to the extent that it meets the needs of end users. These requirements include: Ease of use. A variety of conferencing options. Presence capabilities. Video on Demand/scheduled 4

5 IT Prerequisites Increase and manage bandwidth/qos Coordinate all elements of the video conferencing network Provision, deploy and management Enforce security Ensure scalability VOD/Streaming 5

6 Video Conferencing Bandwidth demand 6

7 Bandwidth and QoS Bandwidth use is an integral part of QoS. Estimate call density and patterns Create a spreadsheet to find peaks 7

8 Real time traffic and QoS All video conferencing traffic is real-time traffic needs to be given proper (QoS) support both in LAN and WAN 8

9 Demand managment If network analysis shows insufficient band width on critical links, the options are: Bandwidth upgrade Reduce voice or video conferencing demand (HD-SD) Compression / Application Acceleration 9

10 MCU Bandwidth Demand Each client must have bandwidth to support negotiated traffic stream with: Audio Video data app. MCU must handle all connections and hence the total sum of bandwidth. 10

11 Converged Network Links Converged network links: data traffic and real-time (voice or video) How to evaluate WAN links Determine real-time load (audio/video) Determine data application load Total bandwidth utilization of the link? Need for dedicated network lines? 11
