1 THE UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS AT TYLER COLLEGE OF BUSINESS & TECHNOLOGY DECISION MAKING IN OPERATIONS MANAGEMENT COURSE SYLLABUS FALL 2010 INSTRUCTOR: Dr. Jeremy St. John COURSE #: MANA 5305 OFFICE: BUS 116 SECTION: 060 PHONE: (903) CLASS TIME: Online Class OFFICE HOURS: MWF 10:00-11:00 am and MWF 1:00 2:00 pm REQUIRED TEXT: McGraw-Hill/Irwin; 13th edition; Operations & Supply Management; authors: Jacobs, Chase & Aquilano COURSE DESCRIPTION: Operations Management integrates all of the activities and processes that are necessary to provide products and services. This course overviews methods and models that help managers make better operating decisions over time. We will also discuss how these methods will allow firms to operate both manufacturing and service facilities in order to compete in a global environment. Special attention will be given to project management including PERT and critical path scheduling in operations management and other business settings. The major operations management issues are quality management and control, capacity management, plant location, layout and design, production planning and scheduling, supply chain management, and inventory management. The analytical tools covered include queuing theory, statistical quality control, linear programming, and learning curves. BLACKBOARD: Blackboard will be used to distribute course materials, class information, administer quizzes, manage assignments, manage class discussions and make announcements. Please check it often.

I reserve the right to make modifications in content, schedule, and requirements as necessary to promote the best education possible within prevailing conditions affecting this course. PREREQUISITES Course prerequisites: MANA 5315 Quantitative Analysis. Students should be proficient in computer usage and file management. Students will need to have access and be capable of sending s to the instructor. NOTE: The UT Tyler School of Business has a computer lab available for student use. COURSE OBJECTIVES I. KNOWLEDGE OBJECTIVES OF THIS COURSE INCLUDE: a. Provide students with a thorough understanding of how the operations function contributes to the competitiveness of a manufacturing or service organization. b. Demonstrate the use of decision making tools to aid the operations manager in making sound business decisions. c. Develop an understanding of the functional activities associated with OM. d. Develop an understanding of the quantitative techniques used for decision-making and basic concepts governing management of OM activities. e. To introduce students to new OM techniques and practices, and provide the foundation necessary to pursue more advanced work in OM. II. COMPETENCIES TO BE DEMONSTRATED IN THIS COURSE INCLUDE: a. COMPUTER-BASED SKILLS: i. WORD PROCESSING competencies will be demonstrated by requiring assignments to be completed with the aid of a word processor. ii. SPREADSHEET competencies will be demonstrated by requiring its use to complete homework. b. COMMUNICATION SKILLS: i. WRITTEN communication skills will be demonstrated by submitted homework assignments and discussion board postings. Charts and diagrams should be computer created and appear in the appropriate section of the submission. ii. Business communication is important and should be presented in a professional manner. communications should follow proper business etiquette. GATHERING & ANALYZING DATA will be demonstrated while working problems, for homework assignments and during exams. iii. QUANTITATIVE/STATISTICAL SKILLS will be required to complete homework and exams. iv. CREATIVITY & INNOVATION will be demonstrated in class discussions and homework. d. ETHICAL ISSUES IN DECISION MAKING AND BEHAVIORS: Specific ethical issues will be addressed in relation to design issues, project management, purchasing, quality and job design as well as in the role of the operations manager. e. PERSONAL ACCOUNTABILTY FOR ACHIEVEMENT: i. MEETING DEADLINES: Students are expected to submit assignments by deadlines to receive credit for the assignments. Homework deadlines will be posted in the announcements section of Blackboard and due when indicated. Late submissions will result in a significant grade reduction or may not be accepted at all. ii. QUALITY OF WORK PERFORMED: Student assignments should be prepared in a professional manner within the guidelines provided. f. COMPETENCE IN BASIC BUSINESS PRINCIPLES: i. Competence in major field and grounding in other major core areas. ii. Awareness of International and domestic implications of business decisions. iii. Understanding and appreciation of the strategic impact of business decisions. OUTCOMES FOR STUDENTS TO SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETE COURSE INCLUDE: a. Demonstrate an understanding of the scope of OM in assignments and exams. b. Demonstrate an understanding of the different types of manufacturing processes utilized by organizations in homework assignments and exams. c. Demonstrate an understanding of the functional activities associated with OM in homework assignments, quizzes and exams. Demonstrate an understanding of the quantitative techniques used for decision-making and basic concepts governing management of OM activities in homework assignments, quizzes and exams. TEACHING METHOD: On-line class implemented via Blackboard with discussions, readings, problems, quizzes, exams and other on-line support material. TOPICS COVERED 1. Operations Management Overview. 2. Systems Design.

READING ASSIGNMENTS COURSE REQUIREMENTS Students are responsible for completing the reading assignments in a timely manner. Deadlines are listed below in the Course Outline (Tentative Class Schedule). Homework assignments / quizzes are made with the assumption that required reading assignments are completed prior to the completion of homework assignments. HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENTS AND QUIZZES Each Chapter s reading and lecture is evaluated by a homework assignment or quiz which will be turned in via the class blackboard website. The assignment/quiz covers the assigned textbook reading. Also covered is related material assigned on the class website (administered through Blackboard) such as discussion board, additional readings, videos, cases, practice problems and tutorials. The tentative class schedule below shows the approximate week assignments/quizzes are due. Details about due dates will be posted in the class Announcements section. Additional details about the assignments will be posted in the course Assignments section at the appropriate time throughout the semester. Additional details about the quizzes will be posted in the course Quizzes section at the appropriate time throughout the semester. You will generally have at least one week to complete assignments and quizzes after they have been posted in the Announcements section. THIS FLEXIBILITY REQUIRES PLANNING, SCHEDULING AND RESPONSIBILITY ON YOUR PART (ALL IMPORTANT OPERATIONS MANAGEMENT SKILLS). LATE ASSIGNMENTS ARE GENERALLY NOT GRADED AND YOU WILL NOT HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO EARN POINTS FOR AN ASSIGNMENT AFTER THE DEADLINE. Quizzes may include multiple choice, True-False, or Short Answer/Essay. If your ISP is unreliable you should take the quizzes from a lab on campus. You can request that I reset the quiz if you take the quiz early enough and your ISP or Blackboard malfunctions. ONLINE DISCUSSION GUIDELINES: I expect respectful, friendly, constructive and open online discussions.

5 Page 5 Please be professional and courteous. Online communication lacks the non-verbal cues that provide much of the meaning in face-to-face conversations. Choose your words carefully, phrase your sentences clearly, and keep your sentences and paragraphs brief. State the main topic of your posting in the Subject line. State your purpose for writing at or near the beginning of your message whenever possible. Proofread what you post. You may want to use a word processor to draft what you intend to say, check your spelling and grammar, and then paste your text into the Message section of your posting. Please do not use all capital letters. It makes it hard to read, and it comes across as though you were shouting. Simple "me, too" type comments that neither expand the conversation nor demonstrate any degree of reflection by the student do not earn discussion points. ATTENDANCE AS AN ON-LINE ONLY CLASS TRADITIONAL CLASS ATTENDANCE IS NOT REQUIRED OR POSSIBLE. HOWEVER, YOU ARE EXPECTED TO PARTICIPATE IN ALL CLASS DISCUSSIONS. Participating in discussion will add to the quality of the course. COURSE COMPLETION You will have access to course materials AT THE APPROPRIATE TIMES THROUGHOUT THE SEMESTER. Sometimes it may be necessary or reasonable to change a timeline or extend a due date and I would like to have that flexibility. Assignments will be posted in the announcements section of Blackboard as will any such changes/extensions to timelines/due dates. GRADES AND GRADING I maintain your grades in Blackboard s Grade Center so you can check them anytime and notify me regarding any problems. Some assignments will take time to grade. The work you will perform for this course is weighted as follows: Points each Total points 15 Discussion board assignments 20 points each 300 points 15 assignments/quizzes 30 points each 450 points 1 Semester Project 50 points Final grades for the course will be determined based upon the following point assignments: A

6 Page 6 B C D F 479 and below GRADE REPLACEMENT If you are repeating this course for a grade replacement, you must file an intent to receive grade forgiveness with the registrar by the 12th day of class. Failure to file an intent to use grade forgiveness will result in both the original and repeated grade being used to calculate your overall grade point average. A student will receive grade forgiveness (grade replacement) for only three (undergraduate student) or two (graduate student) courses repeated during his/her career at UT Tyler.
