1 John Brookes MBE John Brookes is one of the most influential garden designers of the late twentieth century, famous for his work, his teaching and his writing Influential Gardeners by Andrew Wilson Mitchell Beazley John Brookes has designed and built well over 1000 gardens. These range in size from small town and country gardens throughout the UK, to major commercial and private projects all over the World. He is best known for his ability to create gardens that relate to their environment, designing gardens that fit into the wider landscape and which best suit the style and period of the house. He is able to change his style to suit the needs of the site and the wishes of his clients, and his extensive portfolio includes traditional English gardens both formal and informal, modern, minimalist, Islamic and wild gardens for sites ranging from roof gardens, small cottages to large country estates. He has won numerous awards throughout his career including 4 Gold medals at Chelsea. Widely regarded within the garden design world as an innovative and inspirational designer and plantsman, he is regularly quoted as a source of inspiration in programmes and magazine articles. In addition to running an extremely busy international design practise, he is also a successful and prolific author, having written 21 best selling books and countless articles for newspapers and magazines. His first book: Room Outside was hugely influential and became a classic text for garden and landscape designers. His book: Garden Masterclass was awarded the Guild of Garden Writers Book of the Year in 2002 and his Garden Design Book is considered essential reading for students on Garden Design courses. In 2004 he was awarded a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) for Garden Design and services to horticulture, and the 2004 Award of Distinction by the American Association of Professional Landscape Designers. He lectures on garden design in UK and overseas and runs a garden design school in Argentina.

These range in size from small town and country gardens throughout the UK, to major commercial and private projects all over the World.
