1 MINORS 2014 Current CLAS Minor Requirements The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences requires its students who are pursuing a Bachelor of Arts degree to complete requirements for a minor as well. A minor expands student learning and job opportunities, and even chances of getting into a professional or graduate school. That s because minors allow students to develop a good understanding of an additional academic discipline without having to go through the extra time and expense of a double major. As a result, a person minoring in, say, chemistry, with a major in English, could seriously consider going to medical school, as the minor would help her meet medical school preparation requirements. Yet, she could still pursue a passion for writing and literature, through her major. (Yes, medical schools admit English majors, provided they are also prepared in the sciences. That s the potential beauty of a minor.) A minor usually requires students to take five to seven courses in a specific academic area, at a specific level. For example, a student who wishes to minor in Spanish would have to take approximately six courses in Spanish. Students who graduate with language minors have an employment edge check out the help wanted advertisements. It s pretty clear that the ability to speak a language such as Spanish or Japanese will increase a student s marketability. Minor requirements vary from department to department. The sooner you investigate the options and rules for minors, the better. Happy hunting!
