1 Non-Profit Accounting and Administration Semester 1, 2013 Workshops for Administrators Board Members Managers 10 issue-specific workshops to help you stay in control of your finances.
2 2013 Accounting Workshops Recommended for: Financial Statements: What Do They Mean? How Long: 90 Minutes About: Interpreting financial statements, especially the Balance Sheet (Statement of Financial Position) and Notes to the accounts. What Can You Do With It: After this workshop, participants will be able to do a basic analysis on an organisation s financial position and spot problem areas by looking at their financial statements. Using CCA Spreadsheets For Your Organisation How Long: 60 Minutes About: Entering transactions and doing other common accounting tasks with spreadsheets developed by CCA. Recommended for those already using CCA spreadsheets, or considering software options at the moment. What Can You Do With It: After this workshop, participants should be able to understand and apply the full functionality of CCA spreadsheets, such as using it for asset management, creation of financial statements and monthly reporting. Accounting For Grants and Government Contracts About: Distinguishing between grants and contracts; what the accounting standards say about grants for non-profit organisations and the choices they have; ways of tracking grants in different accounting software packages; funders views on accountability (DIA and MSD guest speakers); representing grants in your Financial Statements. What Can You Do With It: This workshop will help participants either implement or better understand their grant tracking system, and to understand how their grants and contracts are displayed in financial statements. Using MYOB Account Right/ XERO for Non-Profit Accounting About: An overview of the functionalities of Account Right or Xero (separate workshops). Doing common tasks and dealing with slightly trickier tasks such as managing petty cash or assets, or doing journal entries. What Can You Do With It: For those new to accounting software, either package should be more familiar and make more sense after this workshop.
3 Management Accounting: Keeping Tabs On Your Projects and Activities About: Managing your accounts so they give you the right information you need to manage your organisation well and represent yourself positively in your Financial Statements. Contains ways of setting up and managing project or location accounts; applying overheads (including depreciation); budgeting and costing projects; Key Performance Indicators. What Can You Do With It: After this workshop, participants should be able to cost, monitor and report on projects (as opposed to the organisation as a whole). Larger Organisations/ many different projects Accounting for Goods and Services Tax (GST) How Long: 60 mins About: What you can and can t claim GST back for, and what you have to charge GST on; the most common mistakes made in GST accounting; GST snags in different accounting software packages. Incorrect GST accounting is one of the most common reasons for negative auditor feedback and often drives up costs for audits. What Can You Do With It: Do GST right. GST-registered organisations Accrual Accounting and the Journal Who For: Administrators for organisations with over $40,000 in expenses. About: The principle of accrual accounting; converting accounts from cash to accrual basis; applying end-of-year adjustments; depreciation What Can You Do With It: Account for all non-cash transactions. Larger Organisations Understanding and Managing Payroll How Long: 90 mins About: PAYE, Kiwisaver, Annual and Sick Leave, Contractors, bonuses; using IRD s online services for payroll. This workshop is about manual payroll management for a limited number of staff. What Can You Do With It: Correctly calculate your staff s deductions and entitlements. Organisations with paid staff Accounting for Assets and Liabilities How Long: 60 mins About: Measuring and reporting assets and liabilities correctly has a big impact on your balance sheet and therefore on how others see your organisation. This workshop is about the general principles of recognising and measuring assets and liabilities, and looking at depreciation or other events that diminish or increase the values of assets or liabilities. What Can You Do With It: Create an accurate Balance Sheet.
