2 MODERN BIOTECHNOLOGY - CONCEPTS AND PRACTICE Science Academies Refresher Course on Modern Biotechnology - Concepts and Practice sponsored by Indian Academy of Sciences, Bangalore, Indian National Science Academy, New Delhi and National Academy of Sciences, Allahabad was Organized at School of Biotechnology, Madurai Kamaraj University, Madurai for 14 days from May 15 th May 29 th This course was designed to train the faculty and researchers on modern biotechnology and the aim of the Refresher s course was to expose the participants to get both theoretical and practical knowledge on concepts and techniques in biotechnology and to widen their knowledge in recent biotechnological concepts. The program commenced with registration and refreshment at 9.30 am on May 15, Wednesday. Twenty two registered teaching faculty and researchers from the educational institutes all over India, were participated. This course was inaugurated officially by the honorable Vice-Chancellor of Madurai Kamaraj University, Dr. Kalyani Mathivanan. The welcome Address was given by Dr. K. Veluthambi, the Head and Chairperson, School of Biotechnology. The presidential address was delivered by Dr. Kalyani Mathivanan, the Vice- Chancellor, MKU followed by the Inaugural address by Dr. G. Marimuthu, the Course Director, MBCP-2013 and the Keynote address was delivered by Dr. P. Palanivelu, Professor and Head, Department of Molecular Microbiology, School of Biotechnology. The inaugural function was ended with a vote of thanks given by Dr. B. Ashokkumar, the Course Co-ordinator. The actual course was started from May15 th afternoon with the lectures given by various eminent scientists in the forenoon and hands on training in the afternoon. Every day, we had guest lectures on diverse topics in Biotechnology in the forenoon sessions. Eminent Scientist Dr. K. Thangaraj, CCMB, Hyderabad, had delivered an excellent lecture on Genetic patterns in Indian populations and Allele frequency differences between ethnic groups in India and Europe. Also he focused how the Indian genetics is different from rest of the world and what would be its implications in health and disease. Genetic testing (also called DNA-based tests) is among the newest and most sophisticated of techniques used to test for genetic disorders which involves direct examination of the DNA molecule itself and how these genetic tests are very useful for human was also taught by Prof. C. Adithan, JIPMER, Pondicherry.

3 Dr. Jayandharan, Christian Medical College, Vellore, had delivered a lecture about Gene therapy poses one of the greatest technical challenges in modern medicine and how it is very hard to introduce new genes into cells of the body. Dr. P. Sundaresan, Aravind Medical Research Foundation, Madurai; Dr. G. Kumaresan, School of Biological Sciences, MKU; Dr. S. Sudhakar, Manonmaniam Sundaranar University, Tirunelveli and Prof. K. Sundar, Kalasalingam University, were elaborated the valuable current scenario of Medical Biotechnology. Energy crisis and the climate change caused by use of petrochemicals that increases emission of carbon dioxide leads global warming are the today s major problem in our earth. So, in order to address these problems and find the solution for this we invited Dr. R. Rengasamy, University of Madras and Dr. N. Thajuddin, Bharathidasn University, Tiruchirappalli as the experts in from the field of biofuels. The invitees expressed their dedication in the field of biofuel production from microalgae. Dr. K. Chandra Raj, IIT Madras also delivered detailed information about bioethanol production strategies from various microbial sources. To meet the increasing demand for food, we have been resorting to intensive cultivation practices with the use of chemical fertilizers. The extensive use of chemical fertilizers leads to cause deterioration of the fertility of top soil. So what are possible ways to improve the crop yield by using cyanobacteria that plays an important role in the plant responses to growth and development was elaborated by Prof. M. Sundararaman and Prof. P. Malliga, NFMC, Bharathidasan University, Tiruchirappalli. Strain development and metabolic pathway engineering for the production of 3- hydroxypropionic acid from glycerol/glucose at significant scales was dealt by Dr. S. Mohanraj, PRIST University, Thanjavur. Furthermore, the common problems in recombinant protein production and strategies for better solutions were discussed by Dr. S.R. Senthil kumar, Head, R&D, Sandwoods Pvt Ltd, New Delhi. Cloning, characterization and overexpression of a thermophilic fungal chitinase in S. cerevisiae for chitinase production was clearly taught by Prof. P. Palanivelu, Head, Department of Molecular Microbiology MKU. Gene silencing is being widely used in modern science as a method to study the function of genes. In order to intricate

4 the detailed information to participants Prof. K. Veluthambi, delivered a lecture on Lessons learnt on gene silencing from transgenic plants with inverted T-DNA repeats. We invited the people from Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) Dr. R. Paramasivam and Mr. M. Muniaraj to create awareness about the mosquito borne diseases. Every day afternoon sessions, the participants were taught with various modern techniques like DNA isolation from various sources including plants, Plasmid and RNA Isolation techniques, 16S rdna Analysis, C. elegans - handling and maintenance, RT-PCR, Quantitative PCR. The participants were taken for a one-day trip to Kodaikanal for their relaxation from normal schedule and it was an exciting trip for them on seeing the natural beauty of Kodaikanal and they really enjoyed the cool weather. After arrival, the routine sessions were there with the lecture and practical sessions. On the verge of course completion, feedbacks were obtained from the participants. Finally, the 14 days refresher s course ended on March 29 th, 2013 with the valedictory function. Dr. Anitha Sironmani, Head, Department of Genetic Engineering, School of Biotechnology, welcomed all the guests. Dr. K. Pitchumani, Registrar, MKU was the chief guest, who presided over the valedictory function and felicitated both the organizers and participants of the program. The refresher course was finally concluded with conclusive report presented by Dr. P. Varalakshmi, Assistant Course co-ordinator and vote of thanks was given by Dr. N. Sivakumar, Assistant Course co-ordinator. Participants were provided course completion certificate as per the directions of Science Academy.
