5 About Lund Lund was founded by the Danish king Sweyn Forkbeard in 990 when he wanted a firmer grip of this part of the country (i.e. Denmark). To assure the importance of the city it was awarded mint rights for making coins and became the archbishopric for entire Scandinavia. For the next four hundred years Lund was one of Scandinavia s most important cities. Construction of the present cathedral started in 1085 when also the oldest school in Scandinavia, the cathedral school was founded. After that the province had been conquered by the Swedes in 1658, Lund University was founded in 1666, with the main purpose of making the upper classes of the province more Swedish. Today the city of Lund, with 114,000 citizens, is very much dominated by the students. Lund University is the largest in Scandinavia with some students, approx. 600 professors and 2800 PhD students in eight faculties. It has also a number of National/International research facilities. Sweden s first and most successful research park, Ideon, is situated in Lund, and two major facilities for materials research are also currently under construction in Lund: the MAX IV Laboratory, which will be a world-leading synchrotron radiation laboratory and ESS, a European facility that will be home to the world s most powerful neutron source. These will be of decisive importance for materials and life sciences and for industrial development. In Lund, Medicon Village has also been established and will offer a unique environment for life sciences; integrating research, innovation and enterprise creates the conditions for improved health and quality of life. Lund the city of ideas In Lund there is a spirit of learning more, achieving more, and making the future even brighter. We therefore call Lund the City of Ideas. This spirit has also resulted in a vast number of inventions over the years. Did you know that the turbohaler, the dialyser, the mobile phone, the use of ultrasound in medicine, the Tetra Pak milk carton, the ink-jet printer, the barospirator (the first machine for artificial respiration), the fingerprint reader and many other inventions all came from Lund originally? Internationally well-known companies include Tetra Pak, Alfa Laval, Sony Mobile Communications, Gambro and Axis.

The journey time by train from the airport to Lund is about 35 minutes. The journey takes you over the Öresund Bridge connecting Denmark to Sweden. The train runs every 20 minutes. From the railway station in Lund you can easily walk to most of the hotels and venues within 10 minutes. 8 Excursions Lund University Lund University has a long and vibrant history covering almost 350 years of teaching. It has evolved from just a few hundred students and professors being paid with meat and grain into its present form, with around students and a position of excellence in international teaching and research. The campus reflects the University s history, with magnificent buildings separated by cobbled streets and green spaces, but also its vision for the future with, for example, one of Sweden s largest science parks located close to the campus and the planned MAX IV facility and ESS European spallation source. Lund Cathedral This is one of the most visited sites in Skåne. You ll understand why when you stand in front of this imposing building, with its mighty twin towers above the roofs of central Lund. Lund Cathedral was consecrated in 1145, and contains many well-known artefacts and features of considerable historical interest. Kulturen Open-air Museum Kulturen is the biggest museum in Skåne, the most southern province of Sweden, and the second oldest open-air museum in the world. The museum was founded in 1892 by Georg Karlin. He realized that the old peasant society was slowly disappearing and resolved to rescue buildings, tools, furniture, clothes and other things. There are now more than thirty buildings, moved and re-erected in Kulturen. The buildings show how people have lived and worked in Sweden through the ages. Flyinge Flyinge is the largest and best-known breeding station in Sweden and one of the world s oldest active national studs, dating back to the 12th century. It is an equestrian centre for breeding, research and training. Flyinge is situated about 15 kilometres from Lund and was established as a royalstud by King Carl X Gustaf of Sweden in In 2011 Flyinge celebrated its 350th anniversary.

9 Suggested activities outside Lund While in Skåne, take the opportunity to discover the regions beautiful cities and countryside. With its public transport system, you can easily get around on your own, or why not choose one of the many organized tours available. Malmö Malmö offers an exciting mixture of astonishing modern architecture and picturesque old buildings and squares. Beautiful parks and the beach contribute to the esthetics of the city. Turning Torso & Western Harbour Santiago Calatrava s spectacular apartment building Turning Torso is Malmö s most famous building and an unmistakable trait of the Malmö skyline. Turning Torso consists of nine cubes with a total of 54 stories, with a 90 twist from base to top. At 190 meters, Turning Torso is also Sweden s tallest building.the building is located at the western harbour, an area characterized by futuristic and modern architecture. Öresund Bridge After a century of discussions about building a fixed link between Sweden and Denmark, the Öresund Bridge was inaugurated on July 1, The link is 15.4 km long and consists of the world s longest cable-stayed bridge for both rail and motor vehicle traffic, at nearly 8 km. The best viewing point over the Öresund Bridge is from Lernacken at the Luftkastellet restaurant. Lilla torg & Gamla väster Lilla torg, built in 1592, was originally used as a market place. Today, it is a lively square packed with restaurants, bars and cafés. Several interesting buildings dating from the 16th century are located around the square. Just west of the square you will find the picturesque area called Gamla Väster. Small cobblestoned streets and colourful houses are the main traits of this area.

10 Helsingborg Travel north along the coast from Malmö, you come to the pearl of the sound, Helsingborg. This is a metropolis for pleasure-seekers as well as those who are interested in art and gardening. Experience a large and varied range of shopping in Sweden s oldest pedestrianized street. Relax at and enjoy many of the cafés and restaurants in the quaint city center. Don t miss to visit King Gustav VI Adolf s summer palace Sofiero and its magnificent gardens. Those that have the stamina should climb Helsingborg s landmark, Kärnan, a stronghold built during a period in the 14th century when Skåne belonged to Denmark. The view from the 34 meter high tower gives you a breathtaking view, stretching all the way over to Denmark. A short walk from here is the cultural meeting-place, Dunkers Kulturhus, located just by the harbour. Here exhibitions and concerts are held, and good food is served at Dunker Bar & Foodhall. Dunkers Culture House Here you will find an art gallery, exhibitions of urban and cultural history, music, theatre, youth culture, shops, fact rooms, restaurants and bistros. Dunker Culture house is part of Helsingborg s Museums, which also includes Fredriksdal Museums and gardens. Southern Sweden s largest arts center is an arena for artistic and creative experiences, learning and creating a meeting place for culture in all its forms! Address: Kungsgatan 11 Kärnan The defensive watchtower, Kärnan, is the symbol of Helsingborg and it has kept watch over the city for almost 700 years. At a height of 34 metres the top offers a ravishing view over the city and the Danish coast. Kärnan is what remains of the mighty Helsingborg castle. On the way up to the top, you get an exciting history lesson on the city s heyday during the Middle Ages. Address: Slottshagsparken Fredriksdal museums and gardens Fredriksdal is one of the largest open-air museums in Sweden. There is something for everybody here when it comes to nature and culture.
