2 Goals Produce graduates that are prepared to enter the workforce in their field of study and/or college Increase the number and percentage of students who complete the three year sequence (10th-12th grade) of a Career and Technical Education curriculum (CTE) by adding resources and programming to enhance a student s experience in a CTE program Develop and implement programs of study and Career Academies in keeping with regional workforce needs
3 Career & Technical Education Programs of Study Programs of Study (as defined by Bureau of Career and Technical Education, BCTE ) 1080 hours of instruction National Occupational Competency Testing Institute (NOCTI) end of program assessment 6 additional credits needed 15 industry-recognized certifications available 8 district high schools represented Communications Technology, Bok, Dobbins, Edison, Mastbaum, Saul, Randolph and Swenson
4 Career & Technical Education Academy Structure Each Academy program is housed in a large urban high school as a "schoolwithin-a-school An Academy curriculum is centered around a career theme to motivate students, connect the schools to business and community partners, and give students practical applications related to their studies. Academy enrollment should not exceed 250 students so that teachers have an opportunity to give adequate attention to the needs of each student. A team of teachers is selected from among the school faculty and an "Academy Coordinator" is chosen to lead the program and be accountable to the Academies, Inc. for the delivery of education and career services to students. Students are scheduled to attend classes together and are taught by a core group of teachers as part of their daily routine. There is contiguous space provided to create a sense of a defined community within the school, which includes an Academy office complete with direct telephone access, fax machines and other items necessary to run the program effectively.

(PAI) Involved in sixteen high schools in nine career areas and serves 6,000 students (represents ~11% of HS student enrollment) Two largest areas of concentration are Business (2,000 students) and Health Related Technology (1,500 students) Facilitates career exploration opportunities for students Supports the integration of academic and career-related instruction PAI facilitates relationships with private business and employer groups PAI curricular programs are taught by School District teachers
6 PAI Career Academies in SDP High Schools Business Lincoln, Roxborough, South Philadelphia, Fels, Kensington, William Penn Health Related Technology King, Overbrook, South Philadelphia, William Penn, Lincoln Automotive West Philadelphia Communications Roxborough Urban Education Furness, Overbook, Parkway West Applied Technology Bok Hospitality and Culinary Franklin, Washington, and Mastbaum Environmental Lincoln Electrical Mastbaum and Swenson
7 PAI and Programs of Study In the past five years PAI has become involved with the Career and Technical Education Schools Electrical programs at Swenson and Mastbaum, Culinary program at Mastbaum, Process Technology program at Bok (collaboration with Sunoco) Of all of the PAI educational programs, only the ones operating at the Career and Technical High Schools are approved by the Pennsylvania Department of Education (BCTE) as Programs of Study.
8 Provide industry relevant guidance and support to all career academies City Wide Advisory Boards Outcome- Assisted in brokering inkind services and countless man-hours to assisting CTE programs, facilities and students to be industry certified and equipped. Provided work-ready activities and trainings for students Provided professional development opportunities for CTE teachers.
9 William Penn Foundation 21 st Century Skills Grant Career and Technical Education and PAI are collaborating on a 21st Century Learning Grant that is funded by the William Penn Foundation to integrate academic and CTE instruction and to provide the students with 21st Century career skills (partnership for 21st century skills). The two schools are Swenson and Franklin. We are in the second year of the grant.
